HOPKINS: 20 minutes into the show

Published

I was really looking forward to this series. I thought, FINALLY, a tv show that depicts REAL hospital life. So here I am, 20 minutes into the very first show of the series, wondering as usual: Where the HECK are all the nurses?

Are there really hospitals out there that function without nurses? Where docotors outnumber the nursing staff 4 to 1? Because that's about the ratio I'm picking up from this "true-life" depiction. And that's not a nurse they introduced us to...its just one I happened to catch walking by in the background. Its discouraging to me. No wonder the public has such a skewed perception of what we really do. Television seems to completely leave us out. Sigh...................we still need to come up with our own tv show.

I gave up after about 20 minutes as well. Its just depressing not seeing nurses. Especially in a top hospital like Hopkins. They have such an opportunity to shine a light on what nurses actually do... and I really hoped the show would come through.

Maybe we're just not interesting enough wearing scrubs instead of skimpy white dresses for the primetime audience.

This trend of the media to downplay and disregard nurses does not surprise me. But you know what, when it comes down to it, I don't give a rat's hienie about what some shallow, pretentious and moronic Hollywood fool thinks of me and my career. I had a CRNA whom I admire tell me that I was a good nurse tonight. THAT mattered to me more than some recognition by some dumb*ss reality show.

I'm also fortunate that I have family members and friends that realize what nurses do on a daily basis. I found out through other people that my Dad brags about "his daughter, the OR nurse" all the time.

So Mr Hollywood Producer, even though to you we nurses are only to be recognized if we sleep with DRs, hopefully someday, you'll get it. We nurses will be there, taking care of your overfed pompous self while you recover from your heart attack.;)

Ho-hum...what I can't believe is why the MD and his wife would allow thier children to be seen on national TV. Money talks, but I can't help but feel that those little girls are being exploited.

I don't think I'll be tuning back in either.

As far as nurses being featured--let's be honest. Nursing has a big image problem and until all of us come together and have respect for eachother, then we can't unite and educate the public on our role.

How about when the surgeon calls the ICU to tell the nurse he's sending up a "bounce-back" pt? Wasn't he kind of being flirty with her? It was funny when she called him a loser. But the weird thing is that I've only once had a doctor call to tell me about pt coming my way - it's always the nurse who calls to give report. When a doctor called me for a direct admit from a clinic, he really had no idea what to say - I had to ask him for every piece of info I needed. He had know idea how to capsulize the relevent past medical history, etc...

Yeah, I would never allow my children to be seen in the midst of a separation. Seems questionable to me. But if the doctor is anything like his buddies...he's a big ladies man. Sadly, he probably already has a few on the side. His PA wife just needs to cut her losses.

I pretty much knew what I was getting myself into when I tuned in at 10...

I think I was just holding onto some very thin thread of hope that the inevitable wouldn't happen.

Sure enough, 20 minutes into the show it became very clear that no nurses were going to be clearly identified and I fell asleep. I defintely won't be tuning in next week.

You've got to love the power of editing!

i have a friend who knows all three of these doctors. the doctors agreed to be filmed. the nurses did not. in fact, some of the nurses were quite adament about not being filmed.

You know I have to say, I think we should all take a little action on this show. I once wrote to UNICEF because here in Georgia they had a commercial for a water program that basically belittled waitressing staff in restaraunts. It was based on paying for the water you get with dinner, and that money being donated to UNICEF water programs. Great idea, until the man stated that tipping someone to do thier job was something he didn't quite understand.

Anyway, I wrote to them, told them of my concerns for thier image and attempting to protect my fellow servers (I was one for 7 years). One week later the ad was pulled nationwide.

Now yes there is a big difference between a donated commercial and a entire documentary, but one can never tell what a little vocalization might put into effect!

I would be willing to help draft something that maybe we could all email off to the makers of the show.

I had high hopes about this show. But they fell short.

The only reason that I did like it was the real life situations of the patients.

And I don't think this will make it in the general public. Not enough drama for them.

You might not like me for it but anyone who is upset I think takes things a little too personal. It is the media, it's a show and that's it!!

Most people who have ever been in a hospital know nurses are smart and educated people, we are the eyes and ears for the doc's, maybe we are not featured on a major reality show, so what?? Would a show following nurses be all that interesting, we do a lot of the same tasks over and over...the patients make it interesting that is about it, sorry nurses! That is just my :twocents:

Good for you for taking action regarding the UNICEF commercial! I watched "Hopkins" earlier and about halfway through I decided to write to ABC about the lack of nurses on the show....glad I'm not the only one planning to take action!

I did look at ABC's website, and it looks like there will be at least a couple of nurses featured in future episodes..... we shall see!

I am glad I banished TV from my life. Some shows do not deserve an audience.

Refuse to watch unworthy shows.
