HOPKINS: 20 minutes into the show

Published

I was really looking forward to this series. I thought, FINALLY, a tv show that depicts REAL hospital life. So here I am, 20 minutes into the very first show of the series, wondering as usual: Where the HECK are all the nurses?

Are there really hospitals out there that function without nurses? Where docotors outnumber the nursing staff 4 to 1? Because that's about the ratio I'm picking up from this "true-life" depiction. And that's not a nurse they introduced us to...its just one I happened to catch walking by in the background. Its discouraging to me. No wonder the public has such a skewed perception of what we really do. Television seems to completely leave us out. Sigh...................we still need to come up with our own tv show.

Yes it's a little disappointing that more nurses aren't featured. As another poster pointed out, many supposedly refused consent. But I must say I am not upset over this. I enjoy many shows that either don't show nurses or do not depict reality (Grey's, ER, Trauma...etc....). It's entertainment to me.

But I still did not like this show. Too boring, and most of the doctor's, in my opinion ,were irritating (even if it was a result of editing). I didn't care for the story lines focused on their personal lives and especially did not agree with the exploiting of the young children of the parents who were discussing their marital difficulties.

Just my :twocents:

i watched it last night and was looking forward to it, thinking it would be more like Hopkins 24/7. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one disappointed in it.

Well, maybe I'll give it one more try next week.

very disappointing

It makes sense to me that the nurses didnt want to be filmed. My license is very important to me, and while I KNOW I practice excellent care, I dont want to be filmed at my job. Seems kind of risky. Think of the professional and social repercussions of being on a show like that? I guess I like my anonimity and enjoy protecting my and my patients privacy.

I didnt catch the show--was too tired after working a thirteen hour shift where I didnt sit down the ENTIRE day. *sigh* How exciting is that? LOL! ;)

Yeah, I would never allow my children to be seen in the midst of a separation. Seems questionable to me. But if the doctor is anything like his buddies...he's a big ladies man. Sadly, he probably already has a few on the side. His PA wife just needs to cut her losses.

I got the impression that his friends were taking him out to introduce him to some babes (not a good idea if you're still married). They were about 10 years too old for that kind of behavior, single or married, IMHO. OTOH, I'm very aware that there may have been some creative editing going on.

But this guy wasn't anywhere near as offensive as the "Houston Medical" hand surgeon who was probably bipolar and in the manic phase, and his wife was going through infertility treatment and it was really obvious that she wanted a baby (or two, or three......) so he would settle down.

Was it "Houston Medical" or "Hopkins 24/7" where the doctor was diagnosed with cancer, successfully treated, and committed suicide some time later? :(

I did a little detective work, and it was neither. It was a 4-part series called "ICU: Arkansas Children's Hospital" that aired around the same time, and the doctor's name was Jonathan Drummond-Webb.

wow.. all I can say is BORING... I lost interest 30 minutes into the shower. I thought it was really boring... I'm disappointed!

it seems our moment in the sun was when Obama followed the nurse in St. Louis; and I wonder how real that even was

I didn't see the show, but from the few threads I've read it seems there is a bright side to this...they are showing doctors as womanizers and scumbags; I don't imagine many of them are very pleased about this image being portrayed to the public

It's because of shows like this that patients either think I'm there to go get coffee for them and therefore have NO medical knowledge or they think I can just prescribe them any med they want and am just being a B*tch when I don't give it to them. It is really frustrating to have to educate people over and over about what I can do for them vs. what they've seen nurses do on TV (yeah well, I've seen plumbers in some movies before too, and I don't believe I've ever been offered "THAT" service before).

Yes, I'm sure there are plenty of docs not happy with the way they're being portrayed either. And I was embarrassed for the 4 guys in the bar -- they're all pushing 40 acting like 21 year old college guys. I was thinking "move on already! stop living in your college glory years". It was all a bit disgusting and sad!

I thought, "You don't think there's a reason why none of you are married?" in reference to his friends.

If that heart surgeon really got around as much as was implied (and once again, maybe it was creative editing), where would he have found the time to train, not to mention father three children? And what kind of idiot is his wife for marrying someone like that? Yeah, yeah, I know, sometimes people don't know what someone's really like until they marry them, but often times, they do.

One woman I know who is a doctor's wife said she had never heard of a cardiologist who had a happy home life. They can have successful marriages if they do not have children, but she said the job takes so much out of them, they have nothing left to give their families. The women in this specialty are worse than the men; they buy their babies and make no secret about it.

This woman is married to an ophthalmologist, and she said that the other eye doctors she knew had the same rate of family dysfunction as the general population. I have heard the same thing about pediatricians, dermatologists, and surprisingly, OB/GYNs.

Whe the neurosurgeon yellled at his interns or co-worker about the 6 month waiting list for the one pt. to get in was unreal. 1st in real life he would be yelling at the receptionist or the office manager. And if they are waiting 6mo for appt. it is usually due to the Dr.'s schedule..... I was thinking this show was going to be something totally different than what it was.
