HOPKINS: 20 minutes into the show

Specializes in ER.

I was really looking forward to this series. I thought, FINALLY, a tv show that depicts REAL hospital life. So here I am, 20 minutes into the very first show of the series, wondering as usual: Where the HECK are all the nurses?

Are there really hospitals out there that function without nurses? Where docotors outnumber the nursing staff 4 to 1? Because that's about the ratio I'm picking up from this "true-life" depiction. And that's not a nurse they introduced us to...its just one I happened to catch walking by in the background. Its discouraging to me. No wonder the public has such a skewed perception of what we really do. Television seems to completely leave us out. Sigh...................we still need to come up with our own tv show.

Disappointing but not surprising.........

Specializes in Cardiac Care.

I agree with you.

As far as the media is concerned, we are invisible. If we're not invisible, we're mistreating our patients, over- and undermedicating them, or ignoring the call bells. Or marrying doctors. It's sad.

Kinda makes me wonder sometimes why I go to nursing school.

Not me. I'm wearing a short little white skirt with a low cut top and stilettos giving a hot guy a sponge bath. That's how many of us female nurses are still seen. Sigh. You're right. It is sad how we are viewed.

 Very very disappointing. And not just because of the lack of nurses. I just can't stand to watch the arrogance of some of these guys.....like the one trying to pick up girls in a bar by telling them he's a doctor. Big turn-off. Oh and what about the one talking about his marital problems. It's one thing to say that the long hours do affect your homelife but to go into specifics like that is another. If I were his wife, I'd be livid that he aired the specifics for the world to see. The only one I didn't not like was the female urologist. Probably won't follow the rest of the series.

Oh great, and the preview for next weeks episode:

A doctor saying, "Dating nurses, it gets tricky".

I guess this is the only recognition we're good enough for.

The purpose of these reality hospital programs (Trauma ER, Hopkins, etc.) are not to expose different health care professions or to even expose different diseases. They are produced for one reason and one reason only: to make MONEY.

Thus, the producers have decided that the network will make more money off of featuring doctors. I am not sure why people get angry/upset over this -- it is what it is.

Yeah, no surprise so far. Nurses did get a mention for the upcoming episode next week though...when the young doc is saying how dating them is "tricky". In all fairness to the doc who is separating...his doucebaggy friend was telling the girls his friend was a doctor, not the doctor himself. But so far, par for the course as far as medical shows go. The female urologist rocked though!

Kinda makes me wonder sometimes why I go to nursing school.

Because you want to be a nurse. Not so you can get media recognition, but because you want to be a good nurse and care for people that need it.

It is frustrating though because it reflects on our profession and it's what the public sees. But we can make it our job to inform them differently and let them see what we really do.

Actions speak louder than words, and a hell of a lot louder than anything you see on TV.

I haven't seen this new show, but I am not suprised at their lack of attention to nursing staff. MDs always get all the glory. As far as it looking like doctors outnumber the nurses, I know in our ER when the you know what hits the fan, 400 residents, interns, med students come out of nowhere. So it really does look like the docs outnumber the nurses. Of course once all the fun is over they all disappear again and the nurses are left to do the real patient care!

The facility I work at has been featured on that Special Investigations show on CNN and in Newsweek, most recently after we made some national news. The show on CNN had Dr. Gupta in it and followed around a couple of residents for a few days. They spent quite a few days filming in our ER, and did they ever interview an ER nurse? Of course not!:angryfire They always showed the nurses from the waist down on the show. I think the Newsweek article may have had like, one quote from a nurse in it.

I did watch the whole episode, and might watch the next one, but it focused on three physicians and their challenges.

So far, it's not as good as "Hopkins 24/7" was.

SPOILER: I did a little Googling after the show was over (mainly because we're having storm warnings here and some of the subtitles were covered by the crawl line) and if you want to know the fate of the heart surgeon's marriage, PM me.

:sofahider

And where were the pharmacists? Oh, wait a minute. Nobody would want to watch us at work all day. :dzed:

THis show is premiering tonight at 10pm. I'm going to stay tuned and see what it's all about. Hope I can get my homework done beforehand. Probably won't :chuckle
