Honestly...Is there still hope for my future???

Published

Here's the story...

I started college August 2005. I was not doing as good as I knew I should have been doing. At the end of my first semester I failed my Biology class. So which put my gpa at a 1.5, hmm not good for first semester. So spring (2006) semester rolls around, Im still not doing well. I was under so much stress and I really didnt have anyone to talk to, I was miserable. I failed 3 more classes: History, English, and Algebra!!!!! (I know yall are probably thinking GOSH!!!) But yeah I was going thru a rough moment in my life. So now my gpa is at 0.5. I get put on academic probation and now the next school year I cannot get any financial aid.

So I am forced to go a tech school here in the mean time until I could save up enough cash to go back to school. (Started Fall 2006) I have taken some classes at the tech school that will (and will not) transfer and my gpa there is a 3.0.

So now I think Im ready to go back to my first college. I have saved up enough to pay for 15 credit hours. I am mentally ready for the challenge. So I have re-applied and now I am waiting to here back from them.

Okay so my big question now is, do I continue as a Pre-Nursing major? Would it make sense to apply to the program after I have failed 4 classes??? There, the Nursing program is really strict! They don't even have very many students because they turn down so many of them. So IS THERE STILL HOPE???

All comments would be really appreciated---no matter how short, harsh, or unrelated your comment may be. I'm OPEN..........

Thanks in Advance

You're still breathing, so there's hope.

I think the first thing you should ask yourself before you decide anything else is whether YOU WANT to do pre-nursing. If you still want to go into nursing, it'll take a lot of hard work but you might be able to recover from this. Start talking with your advisors, work on a game plan to get yourself into a nursing program, retake the courses you failed, keep the good grades coming, and eventually, try to get letters of recommendation from teachers/advisors who can vouch that you've learned from your earlier mistakes and turned your act around (assuming that you actually do just that, of course).

Also, keep in mind that your school's nursing program is probably not the only one out there--you should have other options such as CCs and hospital diploma programs that you can apply for.

But if you've done poorly because you're feeling blah about the field or don't really like it, then save your money and find a new major that you'd enjoy more. Remember, in a pre-nursing/nursing program, you're going to have lots of science classes ahead of you--I saw you failed Bio, so that's something to keep in mind especially if you hate science or it's your weak spot.

Hi, thanks for replying

Despite the fact that Bio was one of the classes that I failed, I can tolerate science classes. I just wasn't studying or anything. It's not my favorite subject but I can get over that. After class everyday I didnt even think twice about going back over notes or anything. It just didnt phase me at all. I seriously regret being stupid for not studying, but I think that this time around I will put forth the effort to do so.

I might sound silly but, what is a hospital diploma program?

And yes you're right about the school not being the only nursing school around. I believe there are 2 others both an hour away. One ASN the other BSN. Im thinking one of those schools will be my only hope, but I just wait and see.

WELL YOU SURVIVED AN ORDEAL MUST WOULD HAVE JUST GIVEN UP SO I COMMEND U ;) YOU'VE DONE GOOD 3.O:balloons: GREAT! IF U STILL LIKE NURSING GO FOR IT, OF COURSE! DON'T LOOK AT HOW MANY PEOPLE THE PROGRAM ACCEPTS, JUST APPLY AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS NO ONE KNOWS WHAT CAN HAPPEN U MIGHT JUST GET ACCEPTED, BUT IF NOT(NOT THE WORDS U WANT TO HEAR) IF YOU STILL LIKE NURSING THERE WILL BE A WAY FOR U TO SUCCEED. THIS SEMESTER IS ACTUALLY KINDA STRESSFUL FOR ME SO YOUR AN ENCOURAGEMENT GOOD LUCK FROM ONE NURSE TO ANOTHER!:nurse:

Yes, there is hope, but it's going to take time.

If I were you, I would take those courses again, and get rid of the F's...retake every class...get a tutor if you need to...you will be shocked at how much your GPA will go up once you get them off your transcript.

You should be able to qualify for financial aid after that.

A diploma program is located in a hospital and leads to the diploma nurse degree (you can be an RN with this in most states). It's usually a 3 year program. But there are not many left. They are a dying breed. It's mostly ADN or BSN now. I think you have alot of options and shouldn't give up:

1. Definitely talk to the prenursing advisor at your school for your chances, and/or a game plan.

2. If it doesn't look like you'll have a good chance with that program, perhaps look at other colleges in your area or even relocating if necessary. Not all colleges have the same criteria. For example I just applied to 3 colleges and 4 different programs. One school I have a 3.4GPA, another I have a 3.33, and at another a 2.54! It's all in the classes they look at. One of those schools also has academic forgiveness. Which means if you retake the class you failed then the new grade is plugged in for the old grade and hocus pocus you now have a much better GPA.

3. Consider becoming an LPN first, then completing a bridge program to RN. Alot of LPN to RN programs are more flexible when it comes to your previous college work. Of course you'll have to retake the classes, but it might not affect your chances of getting into an LPN to RN program so much.

4. OH, and DON'T GIVE UP!!!!!:nono:

When I went to college the 1st time back in, oh, 1991, I was a horrible student. I managed to get my GPA up to a 1.0 after it dropped to a 1.0. :( :(

I stopped going to college three years into a Psyche degree, got married, and helped put my hubby through school. When I went back in 2003 after my kids went to school, I was a different person and was so motivated! I worked my butt off and got into the nursing program with barely a 2.5 cumulative GPA and a GPA of 3.4 in pre-reqs for nursing. They really looked at my most recent grades...I've gotten all A's and high B's (92 is a B in my program so those A's are hard-won).

Now my cumulative is up to 3.0 and I will graduate with a 3.5 in nursing and probably a 3.2 overall--if I dont blow senior year. The point is, I turned it around! You can too...

Good luck!

Whether you say you can't, or if you say you can, you are right.

Would it make sense to re-apply? I don't know. Do you want to be nurse? You're going to have to re-apply if that is your goal. You might try communicating with the people that do the selections, tell them your story, and find out what you need to do to get into the program. After you find out, follow through and do it.

Anything is possible if you want it badly enough.

yes talk to the advisors, they will be straight up with you about what gets you accepted and what doesnt

Some schools have waiting lists for qualified students..that might be an option for you if competative entry isn't.

Many schools will allow you to retake a failed class, the D or F will still be on your transcripts but the new grade will be used to calculate your GPA. Some schools ding you a certain amount of points for retaking classes. I think one of the schools I applied to dings you if you retook a class within 7 years. Now the schools I am applying to require a minimum overall gpa ( I think it is just 2.7) and higher than a 3.0 in the prereqs with no grade being lower than a B (Microbiology, Chem, Organ. chem, anatomy, physiology, English, Statistics, Speech, Anthropology) Realistically, I am told to be competitive you need at least a 3.5-3.8 in the prereqs. So work on mitigating the damage from the previous classes and dedicate yourself to kicking butt on your prerequisites going forward. Best of luck to you.

I failed 5 classes 8 years ago and am currently at the end of 2 out of 3 years of a BSN. I went back to school and had about 2 years of classes before applying to the program (pre-reqs and such). My cumulative gpa was about a 3.0 when applying, but my pre-req gpa was a 3.7. My school based admission on the pre-req gpa and I got in first try. So yes there is hope. Look for schools with science gpa consideration only and look into doing a repeat/delete on some of the classes you failed (I have done that on 2 of mine). My cumulative gpa is up to a 3.3. you can make it work, don't be scared to take the risk.
