Honestly...Is there still hope for my future???

I had the worst habit when I first started college. I would also register for classes and stop going half way through the semester. I had many F's to make up...

I never did make up all of those F's but luckily enough my current college only takes into consideration the classes needed for prereqs. I count my blessings. These are stories to share with our children one day as what not to do.....Have faith, you will be fine.....

Another option I've heard of is academic amnesty. It could possible have other names at other schools, but the concept is: you petition the school to wipe a semester/year completely off your transcript. Let's say with those four Fs you also had 2 Bs and 2 Cs - all that is gone, you have 0 credit hours, and you start over. All you're really out is the money you spent on the classes the first time. I've never had to do that, so I'm not entirely sure what the requirements are - you may have to let a few years pass or something, but it's out there. OTW, definitely look into what your school's policy is on repeating classes. Some schools have limits on how many you can do, some average the grades, and others don't care. Make sure you talk to an advisor before you do anything though, and also that you are sure you want to be a nurse!

Academic amnesty???!!! Sounds like a life saver for me! I'll have to check into that. I doubt if they have that though. But it never hurts to ask.

I second the idea of acadamic amnesty. It's called academic forgiveness here. Many programs don't honor it though. Luckily, mine does. I had a bad first semester of college.

Also before retaking your pre reqs, you need to check with an advisor at your school. I say that b/c at my school, they only count pre req grades toward admission. Here, if you were to fail say, English Lit 201 and then retake it with an A, both grades would still be there, just averaged together giving you a C. On the other hand if you took English LIt 202 instead of retaking 201 only the grade in 202 would count. If there is another equivilant or higher class option that fits that pre req requirement, they only count the highest grade. Just something to check into.

Another thing to consider is when a college gives academic amnesty, the old grades remain on your transcript.

It isn't a problem at the college giving the amnesty, but it is a problem when you want to get a higher degree of nursing at another college, because they will take into consideration the GPA on ALL college work attempted, unless you can ask in advance for an exception, which most of them will not do.

If you want it you can do it. I was in somewhat in the same situation as you--My undergard bachelor's gpa, was not great. :)

I went back to school took my pre-reqs and even got (gasp) a C plus in one of my pre-reqs and I was accepted to a nursing school. My overall gpa of pre-reqs was ok.

I applied to some schools and got rejected by many, many schools. I even got accepted to a few schools as well, not sure if they're teh right fit but I'm waiting on one school in particular. If you really want it you can do it.

There is always hope, you may have to move, change schools...etc But you can do it, No one can stop you. Good luck in the upcoming semester. Hope you kick ar$e!!!!

To everyone: you are all such an inspiration to me, its so nice to positive people in your life....even if you dont get to meet face to face or if you only chat once...lol....its still a great thing!!!

I just cannot wait for the Fall semester to start back. I am ready to pick myself up and ace all of the classes I failed and then some. :)

Honestly, Run, do not walk away from the ideal of being a nurse. [evil]Nursing School BITES [/evil]and if you are having that many problems with pre nursing classes you will never make it in nursing school where there is 0 extra credit and 0 help from fellow students and faculty. Save the money and move on to something else. Sorry to be so honest with you but it is the TRUTH :nono:

Oh come on. The OP is young. We all make mistakes. You've just read several stories of others that have been in her shoes and are now nurses. Yes she will have a hard time if she doesn't decide she really wants this but she doesn't have to give up her dream.

Missbwm-- I've been in your shoes. I found the school I was attending wasn't for me, even though i loved the area. I'm getting the last of my prereqs done to start nursing school next year and finishing a psychology degree. You can turn things around if you really want to. But do try to retake those classes and then let them know you've repeated it so the new grade can go in. At my school there's a form you have to turn in so they will replace it.

Here's the story...
I started college August 2005. I was not doing as good as I knew I should have been doing. At the end of my first semester I failed my Biology class. So which put my gpa at a 1.5, hmm not good for first semester. So spring (2006) semester rolls around, Im still not doing well. I was under so much stress and I really didnt have anyone to talk to, I was miserable. I failed 3 more classes: History, English, and Algebra!!!!! (I know yall are probably thinking GOSH!!!) But yeah I was going thru a rough moment in my life. So now my gpa is at 0.5. I get put on academic probation and now the next school year I cannot get any financial aid.
So I am forced to go a tech school here in the mean time until I could save up enough cash to go back to school. (Started Fall 2006) I have taken some classes at the tech school that will (and will not) transfer and my gpa there is a 3.0.
So now I think Im ready to go back to my first college. I have saved up enough to pay for 15 credit hours. I am mentally ready for the challenge. So I have re-applied and now I am waiting to here back from them.
Okay so my big question now is, do I continue as a Pre-Nursing major? Would it make sense to apply to the program after I have failed 4 classes??? There, the Nursing program is really strict! They don't even have very many students because they turn down so many of them. So IS THERE STILL HOPE???
All comments would be really appreciated---no matter how short, harsh, or unrelated your comment may be. I'm OPEN..........

Hey welcome to the board,

congrats on pulling yourself out of a whole that is great and may actually beable to be used to your benefit, not all young people learn from their mistakes but sounds like your using this as a good life lesson YAY YOU!!

Ok first off you have a couple options, I would shop around to different schools and see what they offer, go to some nursing workshops each school usually has them to inform you about their program, check online for time dates. Don't go by what is said online though SPEAK to someone there!

Ok some take people on grades only but many schools have either a waitlist or give credit for life experience, as well as essays, (this incidently would be a good essay topic).

Thridly you can do a step program which with you being so young would be the way I would go. Start off taking a cna class if you like it continue on with LVN (less competition) many schools take you on GPA of pre reqs which might be different from what you take, ie. my school lvn pre reqs are Anatomy 100 (intro course) english 98 (fundimentals not comp) and a basic math and dosage calc. From there you can step to RN if you so desire.

Don't give up keep plugging away you have many years ahead of you and you have come further then most by learning and moving forward. For the Record I was in similar shoes 20+ years ago, took me longer to get my act together )

To the OP, I've also messed up, except I did in highschool. I graduated hs with only a 2.0, and I now have a 3.8 in college after I decided to get my act together. You can do anything you set your mind to!!!!:icon_hug:
