Before you rush off to the pharmacy to get meds filled with side effects, what are some natural grandma remedies do you know of...please share. I'll go first.
For Arthritis pain:
My mom and I use this remedy all the time and it works.
Vinegar for a sunburn. It takes the fire & heat out of the burn, although it doesn't totally stop it from hurting. .
my Grandma put Maalox on my BAD sunburn when I was a kid. It burned like fire for 2 hours then felt better! she claims vinegar too but she says vinegar for every thing :barf01:
A clothes pin on the nose works great for gas.:chuckleOk, seriously my grandmother always made us drink lots of orange juice and chicken soup for any kind of respiratory ailment. If it was the flu she made us take 2 asprin as well every 4 hours. Like someone else posted, if we were not better
This is a great thread - just an FYI - not trying to be a downer . . . . .do not give aspirin or any product containing salicylate to children. It can cause Reye's Syndrome.
(I'm also not crazy about giving kids whiskey).
steph
Hiccups:
Soak a fresh lemon slice in Angostura Bitters. Add a spoon or two of sugar into your mouth (optional - this is only for those who can't stand the taste of the Bitters), drink as much of a glass of water as you can, and then bite into the bitters-soaked lemon. Don't eat the rind.
May repeat in 5-10 minutes if first dose ineffective.
When I used to bartend PRN, this worked with an 80% success rate. :)
Somebody needs to do a study on this...
garlic seed mullen for ear infections
Garlic oil for earaches - poke and squeeze the oil out of garlic pills into the ear canal.
Ahhh, yes! The whole "garlic oil" for ear aches.
Tried by my Mother.
Didn't work!
The only thing that helped?
4-5 drops 3-4 times a day.Chloramphenicol IP 5% w/vBeclomethasone Dipropionate IP 0.025% w/v
Clotrimazole IP 1% w/v
Lignocaine Hydrochloride IP 2% w/v
in Glycerine IP and
Propylene Glycol IP Base
Yep :) 1-2 teaspoons of brandy when we were kids...My mom always swore by hot toddies when we were sick as kids.
cheers,
Oooh, just remembered something about honey.Once winter starts to lift and spring is upon us, I find a jar of locally harvested honey and take a teaspoon full every day. Keeps seasonal allergies at bay.
1-2 table spoons of honey with a glass of warm milk.
Decent laxative. Mild enough for daily use, if need be.
cheers,
I am sure many of you have heard of "The People's Pharmacy" a radio show on public radio. It is a great show that takes a complimentary approach to medicine. Many of the listeners call in with their home remedy. The remedies that seem to work are posted on the website....check it out http://www.peoplespharmacy.com/archives/home_remedies/index.php
Thanks so much for sharing this site! It's awesome!!!!
Oh, I forgot about thrush! Gentian violet clears it up in no time flat. One of our sons had chronic ear infections as a baby and he battled thrush every time he started another round of antibiotics, Nystatin did nothing to help. A little purple in the mouth and it was all gone every time. Of course, all of his toys and clothes got covered in purple as he drooled it out, but it was worth it!
For eye puffiness (worked for a bug bite near the eye too): Take a regular tea bag, dip it in hot water until it starts to steep, then take it out and let it cool. When it's cooled off, lie down, place on your eye for about an hour.
For eye "sand": use no-more-tears baby shampoo.
And everyone knows that Colace (use a pin, squeeze into the ear, hold the head sideways for 1/2 hour) is a good ear wax softener.
