Before you rush off to the pharmacy to get meds filled with side effects, what are some natural grandma remedies do you know of...please share. I'll go first.

For Arthritis pain:

  1. Take a box of golden raisins. (note: they must be the golden variety, sometimes called white raisins, not ordinary black raisins).
  2. Place the raisins in a shallow container.
  3. Cover the raisins with gin.
  4. Let the raisins soak in the gin for a few weeks until the gin evaporates.
  5. You then eat nine of these drunken raisins a day to help your arthritis.

My mom and I use this remedy all the time and it works.

1) Crystallized ginger for stomach aches...for me, the fact that the ginger is covered in sugar makes it a little more palatable than the ginger tea!

2) It's not really a home remedy, but laying on one's left side is really helpful in alleviating gas. Definitely the best trick I learned from A&P!

3) Haven't tried this one myself, but my grandmother swears that when she had a couple of warts on her hand, she rubbed them with regular white chalkboard chalk and they disappeared in a few weeks. Thanks for starting such a neat thread!

Take duct tape and apply a small piece to a wart until it disappears. It works and it is cheaper and less painful then freezing it.

Crush an aspirin and mix with water and apply cream to razor bumps...perfect for women too chicken to get a Brazilian wax!:)

Garlic oil for earaches - poke and squeeze the oil out of garlic pills into the ear canal. My son had allergies and so had many earaches while a toddler. He didn't smell so nice, but we avoided lots of doctor visits and antibiotics. Works quickly.

Sciatic pain - stretch out the leg and flex the foot on the affected side. Hold it awhile. Also heel massages.

If you're cold, eat a bunch of ginger. It turns up your body thermostat. I eat it as ginger candy.

My mom always swore by hot toddies when we were sick as kids. Hot tea with a little lemon, a generous dollop of honey, some sugar, and a dollop of whiskey (like a 1/4 shot or less). We'd always feel better when we woke up :)

Swallowing a spoonful of honey for sore throats/coughs helps some as well.

In the time between our oldest three and our baby, they pulled all the baby cold meds off the market. So we figured out that Ocean Spray frequently, along with baby Vick's and hot showers, helps out little ones with colds.

To treat acne:

Crush regular aspirin (3-6 depending on how many spots you have). Mix with RAW organic honey, and a sprinkle of cinnamon (I use Saigon cinnamon) until it makes a sticky paste. Leave it on about a half hour then rinse. The aspirin and cinnamon calm the inflammation, and the honey is an amazing antibiotic. Just be careful, it is sticky!

A clothes pin on the nose works great for gas.:chuckle

Ok, seriously my grandmother always made us drink lots of orange juice and chicken soup for any kind of respiratory ailment. If it was the flu she made us take 2 asprin as well every 4 hours. Like someone else posted, if we were not better in two days we got a hot toddy at night before bed too.

I swear by mint tea ( can be either peppermint or spearmint ) to calm my intestines. I have Crohn's and it works better than Remicade. Ginger is good too. And I take milk thistle daily as well.

I am sure many of you have heard of "The People's Pharmacy" a radio show on public radio. It is a great show that takes a complimentary approach to medicine. Many of the listeners call in with their home remedy. The remedies that seem to work are posted on the website....check it out http://www.peoplespharmacy.com/archives/home_remedies/index.php
