Before you rush off to the pharmacy to get meds filled with side effects, what are some natural grandma remedies do you know of...please share. I'll go first.

For Arthritis pain:

  1. Take a box of golden raisins. (note: they must be the golden variety, sometimes called white raisins, not ordinary black raisins).
  2. Place the raisins in a shallow container.
  3. Cover the raisins with gin.
  4. Let the raisins soak in the gin for a few weeks until the gin evaporates.
  5. You then eat nine of these drunken raisins a day to help your arthritis.

My mom and I use this remedy all the time and it works.

Baking soda paste for bee stings works too! Just mix baking soda with a little bit of water to make the paste and then place it on top of the bee sting.

I keep forgetting about the baking soda for bee stings. I can't use benadryl or any creams here as a school nurse, so that would really help! We see a lot of insect bites when its warmer out!

I also swear by my Neti pot. My allergies have been kicking my butt, and I need to use it again. I have never been able to swim underwater or anything, so for me to do this was a big deal. I'm now a convert, even though my husband swears "I'm weird" :lol2:

For burns: instead of running under cold water (which could disturb any blister that forming) put your burned hand in a pitcher of iced tea straight from the fridge.

When my 5 siblings and I had chickenpox, mom took the itch out with a paste made of baking soda and Vick's Vaporub. I'd forgotten about it until reading all the baking soda stuff here.

Also, recently heard a nurse relaying info from a podiatrist saying the cheapest way to treat a nail fungus is with Vick's. Go figure. Learn something new everyday.

Also for peds cough: vicks placed on the feet with socks over it! Works like a charm.

Peppermint helps my headaches also, in addition to tummy upsets.

I have developed a really effective treatment for my migraines, which I have struggled with since I was a pre-teen. They usually wake me up in the early morning, so I immediately take two excederin migraine (has caffeine in it, which also helps some people), apply Head On for migraines (Yeah, stupid commercial but it really does help), and suck on a peppermint or sip peppermint tea while taking a warm bath with no direct lighting (I use a lamp in the next room for some indirect light). It works with almost 100% effacacy for me at least!

What's that "head on" stuff made of/ how's it worK? I thought the commercial was a joke.

Glad you found something to help you- headaches are the pits.. :redbeathe

It is a homeopathic remedy, the active ingredients for the extra strength one (I don't have the one for migraines on me, I use this one for tension headaches at work) are Kali bichromate and Bryonia alba. It gives a nice tingling sensation on the forehead. It is the only homeopathic remedy I have ever tried, but based on it's effectiveness I may try others. I was definitely a non-believer on that stuff until this. I have even used it alone when I did not have excederin handy and it takes the edge off enough to function.

This is a great thread - just an FYI - not trying to be a downer . . . . .do not give aspirin or any product containing salicylate to children. It can cause Reye's Syndrome.

(I'm also not crazy about giving kids whiskey).

Not a downer at all. I did not use the hot toddy on my kids or give asprin either. Mom says grandma only gave it to us when we were older. Should have specified.

Does anyone one know any cure for acne?

Ive tried everything from accutane to differin...you name it i've done it. ty

When I was in nursing school I mentioned the benefits of putting a aloe vera directly on the burn - I don't mean what you buy in a bottle, but the actual plant, sliced so the inner gel lies directly on the burn. This will immediately soothe the burn better than anything else I have ever tried. Of course, my professor advised everyone that this was not recommended practice - for some reason, modern nursing seems to disregard old tried and true home remedies!

Yeah. One of my old bosses swore by that. She would put plain yogurt on a pad for a day or two it was gone. I know I eat more yogurt when I feel one coming on to replace the good flora.

Yogurt is VERY effective for me for the treatment of YIs. What I do though is this (sounds weird, but I read it somewhere and it works): Take an empty tampon applicator and fill it with the yogurt, and then insert and plunge it straight into the lady parts...Don't forget to wear a pad for leakage! Works best at night so only a little falls out. I swear in one day/night, the YI will be history!

Oh and some people like to freeze the yogurt in the applicator before putting it in...I've tried it and it feels pretty strange. If you are burning/itching a lot, it does feel nice...lol

i'm thinking you could insert the yogurt and stop leakage w/a tampon.

i've heard about yogurt for yi's, but never knew if you were supposed to eat it or insert it.
