i have already went through the channels and my Christmas vacation request was rejected. oddly enough, i wanted to work Christmas last year, but they denied me.
the turnover rate is high i am #5 on the seniority list with only 1 year of experience. so you have an idea of the environment i am in. not sure why i was denied, either. i don't plan on working at this facility in the near future so it doesn't bother me if i am terminated.
anyway, anybody ever call in on a major holiday like thanksgiving, christmas, new years, etc.. ? did they reprimand you? what happened?
What happened last year may have NO impact on this year. It is NOT uncommon that new nurses (like new grads) are not obligated to work the holidays. It is usually slower during the holidays but if it is not....other resources have the holiday off and it is necessary to be sure the mix of nurses is appropriate for patient care....ie: monitored units and nurses being trained for that unit.ironically, i requested to work last year... but i was denied ANY holiday because certain people didn't have plans and wanted the additional holiday pay. i was bumped off thanksgiving, Christmas, and new years, because i was newer. i did not work ANY of those days. now those nurses have jumped ship. how fair is that?i play secretary when we're short staffed, i answer OTHER nurses call lights, i am the only person who assists the CNA/MA because i do not believe i am beyond bed baths and toileting, i am the first nurse in a room when there is a code to offer assistance... let's leave the comments about my work ethics and character out of this. my director and coworkers love when i am on the floor because it lessens EVERYBODYS workload. there's a reason i scored 3/3 on my annual review. anything listed "willingness to assist others" , "teamwork" , etc... i was 100% on.
i was told we cannot request holidays off. but i still need to figure out what my punishment will be because i am still going to call off. i need these days. sorry.
I see that you are helpful to your fellow nurses. I know that there are nurses that do not help...but any unit I have been staff or been in charge of....I feel this is a minimal requirement to be a good nurse and not as a pathway for special privileges.
You need to check your union contract, contact your Representative to see if you are being treated fairly and if you are not being treated fairly you can file a grievance. While you have your union rep with you see what the disciplinary action is for nurses.
I called in once in 30 years for New Years Eve. I called in in Boxing Day (Dec26) to let them know my Father has just been transferred to ICU after being admitted on the 24th with pneumonia. (After I dragged him to ER). I was 250 miles away from hime and there was no way I was leaving him. I emailed my manager with the details and told her I would take an Unpaid Leave of Absence for my missed shifts.
Being the great place it is, I was given permission to use my vacation time instead.
That being said, the next year I worked Christmas and dragged myself in with a very nasty cold.

People, please don't drag yourself in to work with a "very nasty cold". Stay home and keep your nasties at home with you.
Very few people WANT to work on a holiday that they celebrate. I do not think that it is right to call off because a request for time off is denied. I also don't think that it is right for employers to have separate policies as how they handle a call off on a major holiday if someone is legitimately ill.
My current facility counts a holiday as a double occurrence. 6 occurrences in a 12 month period is termination. Period. Legitimate call off or not. That being said, facilities have their own policies.
I worked at an ALF a few years back and came down with influenza type A while out of state three days before Easter. I was the only nurse scheduled to work. I was SICK, really bad. I made it a point to get to my doctor, get tested, and have the diagnosis on the sick note, stating how long I was at risk of giving it to all of my residents. I couldn't work if I wanted to as I could barely walk. They didn't reprimand me, as I never called out. I did get daily calls from the Executive Manager and the Nursing Director that weekend to see "How I was feeling"...I think if they had iPhones I would have FaceTimed the call it was so ridiculous. They would rather put the residents at risk of infection than not have me there. Oh, and my flu shot was up to date.
i'll speak with my union rep. when i get back in there. the only thing i read about being reprimanded was consecutive call offs, not specific to holidays. thanks.
Well, your "imsickagain" AN name, seems to shed light on the fact that calling in sick is no big deal to you. It is to your coworkers, and you should be concerned about what a termination will look like on your record. Most likely "not eligible for rehire", may end up biting your where the sun doesn't shine...
The OP has left the house. Special Snowflakes don't like any dissent when they go about justifying doing the exact wrong thing, as he/she plans to do. He/she does not give a horse's hind end about anyone else; it's all about them. No doubt, the decision will stick about calling out sick. Hopefully, management will see it for what it is, and act accordingly.

And if management doesn't get her, her coworkers will. One day she is going to need them and they are going to be reluctant to have her back. I"ve seen this. And it isn't pretty
Looks my request for Christmas vacation was granted!! Our hospital policy was either to work December 24th 25th or December 31st January 1st. I have priority in scheduling over my coworkers so I choose to work New Years. Maybe, I'll call out then. Ha!
Love the responses. I'll post again when I leave this place on my own will and find another hospital to work at.

Well, gosh. I can't wait to be villianized because all of us here on ill-reputed AN begged to disagree with your poor attitude and decision making.
So looking forward to that future post, OP. Ta ta.

If you are union I am sure that there are specific rules about sick calls and the corrective action plans that are negotiated in the union contract. Before you continue to make disparaging comments to other members...I suggest you actually look at your union contract. It will be informative. Here at AN we encourage good debates but as the TOS state...personal attacks will not be tolerated.
