holidays... sick call...

Published

i have already went through the channels and my Christmas vacation request was rejected. oddly enough, i wanted to work Christmas last year, but they denied me.

the turnover rate is high i am #5 on the seniority list with only 1 year of experience. so you have an idea of the environment i am in. not sure why i was denied, either. i don't plan on working at this facility in the near future so it doesn't bother me if i am terminated.

anyway, anybody ever call in on a major holiday like thanksgiving, christmas, new years, etc.. ? did they reprimand you? what happened?

it is relevant when people with reading comprehension issues bash me about my work ethnics, morale, and all that other BS.

What's the deal with the "reading comprehension" line lately. Don't like a reply, insult poster's literacy...

I think it needs to be added to Flounce Bingo. :woot:

ironically, i requested to work last year... but i was denied ANY holiday because certain people didn't have plans and wanted the additional holiday pay. i was bumped off thanksgiving, Christmas, and new years, because i was newer. i did not work ANY of those days. now those nurses have jumped ship. how fair is that?

i play secretary when we're short staffed, i answer OTHER nurses call lights, i am the only person who assists the CNA/MA because i do not believe i am beyond bed baths and toileting, i am the first nurse in a room when there is a code to offer assistance... let's leave the comments about my work ethics and character out of this. my director and coworkers love when i am on the floor because it lessens EVERYBODYS workload. there's a reason i scored 3/3 on my annual review. anything listed "willingness to assist others" , "teamwork" , etc... i was 100% on.

i was told we cannot request holidays off. but i still need to figure out what my punishment will be because i am still going to call off. i need these days. sorry.

Then you need to make some very discreet inquiries to the people who would know the answer to your question. Unless we know where you work and what their policy is for holiday call offs, all we can do is guess.

FWIW, everyone should be getting a 3/3 score on that area of the annual review. That's something to be expected, not bragged about.

I already have heard of coworkers saying they will call off because for almost three years they have been screwed over with the scheduling. Some have been forced to work every major holiday or work in such a schedule that didn't allow for any family time.

I would say that unless it is grossly unfair (like being forced to work every holiday or having a ****** schedule year after year), you need to show up. Sorry.

Speaking of literacy and reading comprehension, OP, what, exactly, are "work ETHNICS"?

Speaking of literacy and reading comprehension, OP, what, exactly, are "work ETHNICS"?

I think that's when nursing schools/employers give preference to people who speak a second language that is common in the region, as another poster was recently complaining about...

Your co-workers will see you posting on insta/Facebook/Snapchat on vacation having fun when you called out. They will screenshot these social media pics/posts and email them to your manager. They will screenshot your text threads and send them to your manager.

I did this to my BEST FRIEND. You are a brand new nurse who has never worked any holidays. Literally no one is going to have sympathy because you want to call out for the first major holiday you've ever been scheduled for, especially when you were told well in advance that you would have to work it!

It seems like you're trying to be a great nurse here, and that's good, but you badly need some emotional maturity.

I wondered how long it'd be before someone caught the "typos" by one making literacy and reading comprehension skills remarks. *** SBE

Here's what I dont understand. I see it in the Nursing profession as well as My own profession which is kind of on the hinges of Nursing.

You get hired by a company....any company. You accept the pay, the hours, the benefits, the __________ of nursing. But once you have said job...whether you're there a month, a year, a century whatever, you start not wanting to abide by the rules / guidelines even though you KNEW going in what it'd be. How can you expect to "walk into someone elses home" and just change everything you dont like? Comeon now...be realistic.

i'll speak with my union rep. when i get back in there. the only thing i read about being reprimanded was consecutive call offs, not specific to holidays. thanks.

I'd be surprised if there isn't some special disciplinary process for someone who requests vacation during the holidays, doesn't get it and then calls in sick. At the very least, a paper trail will be initiated.

What you are contemplating is a very pissy thing to do to your colleagues, who will have to work harder to cover your absence. I wouldn't blame them all for hating you.

Your work ethic and character both suck. It sounds like you had a really nice holiday season last year -- be grateful. This year it's your turn to work Christmas. Suck it up and work Christmas.

it is relevant when people with reading comprehension issues bash me about my work ethnics, morale, and all that other BS. it's not my fault if people are unhappy about their own life circumstances. like always, allnurses never fails to find an angle on somebody.

if you see my original post i had a simple question:

anyway, anybody ever call in on a major holiday like thanksgiving, christmas, new years, etc.. ? did they reprimand you? what happened?

thanks to those who posted about rotating holidays, institution policies, etc... as i thought it was seniority based. i have questions to ask my HR department and union.

No, I have never called in on a major holiday, although once I was sent home from work with a fever and chills. Anyone I know of who called in sick on a major holiday was subject to disciplinary action. The people I know of who planned to call in sick because their request off was denied were terminated and designated "Do not rehire."

Calling in on a major holiday denotes lack of character and integrity. And your increasingly snarky posts denote a poor attitude in addition to a poor work ethic.

This ^^^^. Do you really think this is ok to do to your co-workers? If you do this, be prepared for some very unhappy co-workers, who will likely never do a thing to help you again, let alone speak to you. I have absolutely no respect for someone who would consider such a thing. I think you should give your notice now, and then look for another job after Christmas.
