holidays... sick call...

Published

i have already went through the channels and my Christmas vacation request was rejected. oddly enough, i wanted to work Christmas last year, but they denied me.

the turnover rate is high i am #5 on the seniority list with only 1 year of experience. so you have an idea of the environment i am in. not sure why i was denied, either. i don't plan on working at this facility in the near future so it doesn't bother me if i am terminated.

anyway, anybody ever call in on a major holiday like thanksgiving, christmas, new years, etc.. ? did they reprimand you? what happened?

Looks my request for Christmas vacation was granted!! Our hospital policy was either to work December 24th 25th or December 31st January 1st. I have priority in scheduling over my coworkers so I choose to work New Years. Maybe, I'll call out then. Ha!

Love the responses. I'll post again when I leave this place on my own will and find another hospital to work at.

I don't believe one word of this. Just the OP trying to thumb her nose at the universal condemnation of her narcissism.

Post one you were working so what gives? Why do you have priority scheduling over your co-workers?

You could have nicely told us you got your Christmas vacation off and left out the part of calling out on New Years. I don't know if you were trying to be funny but after your previous responses it comes across as very juvenile.

While the OP may have posted her immature and pot-stirring post just to sit back and watch as we called her out, I'm hoping that somewhere, a student or new grad read the thread and learned something.

Holidays are important. We all want to be off for the holiday, but if we choose to work in an environment that is open for business 24/7/365, someone has to work them. Most facilities try to be fair about the holiday schedules, even though it may seem to you when you're new and at the bottom of the heap seniority wise you're being unfairly targeted. If we choose to work in the hospital environment, we WILL have to work some holidays.

Vacations in the holiday season are frowned upon. Calling out on a holiday without a documented admission to the ER requiring surgery and a prolonged ICU stay (for yourself, not your loved ones) will be frowned upon both officially and unofficially by your manager, her manager and your colleagues. Even if it is not a firing offense, unless you are perfect in every OTHER way, it will probably precipitate a discussion at the management level as to whether or not you are "a good fit" for your job, and perhaps a paper trail as well. The paper trail will become grounds to dismiss you sooner or later, and how clean you keep your nose will define how soon is sooner or how late is later.

Besides all of the official management notice taken of your actions, your co-workers will know what you did, and they will not love you for it. It's a really crappy thing to do to your co-workers.

I know for a fact i am working Thanksgiving...and I would be PISSED at my coworker if they called off leaving me shortstaffed. expect your coworkers to give you the evil eye when you return.

Surprised nobody noticed my Incorrect use of chose/choose ... what ?!? lOl .

Why would we even care?

I do want to thank you, though, for starting a thread with an unbelievable post illustrating how NOT to behave. Hopefully some of the new grads and about to be grads on the forum have learned from your poor example.

I'm just wondering... if you're so OK with being terminated as you say, why not just quit and find a job (i.e. outpatient nursing) where you will most likely have holidays off? It's only October so you could likely do this prior to Christmas, leaving your current employer plenty of notice to cover your shift on Christmas (rather than no notice if you call in sick). Also, as many others are saying, a termination will not serve you will in any future job search.

In my 40 + 3 months of nursing I only called in once on a holiday. It was my first nursing job. I had a teperature of 101; nasea; vomiting; and diarrhea. My call in was denied. So, I took the appropriate medicings and went into work. Our census was low (med/surg unit). The house supervisor refused to send me home...."just take some Tylenol and anti-diarrheal; you'll be fine ". My co-workers were blessings. They could tell how sick I was. They each took 1 of my patients (4 staff; including me; 3 patients each). Because of my call in being refused; house supervisor refusing to send me home; I ended up missing 1 week of work. Three of which were in the hospital where I worked.

My ER doctor was appalled when I told him why I waited to be treated. He then contacted the CEO and Chief of staff; and , had me tell them what happened.

The DON was notified. The person who refused my call in and the house supervisor both were reprimanded.

My hospital bill was paid in full when I was discharged.

And it's because of jerk moves like lying about illness, that **** like this happens to dedicated workers.

Dude... when you agree to work for a floor that is open all year, you are probably going to work some holidays. If you hate it so much, quit now and get a job at a doctors office, outpatient surgery, something else. You are doing your co-workers a huge disservice.

I don't drink/party so I volunteered for every New Year'S Eve and usually a single younger nurse would take my Christmas. That way I was home with my kids Christmas Day and they could go out and have fun New Years.

Check your federal employment laws.

Former employers can only give dates worked (start date to last date worked); and, eligible for re-hire .

Anything else may be considered slander; and, grounds for a law suit.
