Hi, I'm screwed

I worked really, really hard this semester and only pulled out a B in A and P I, a C in chem and an F in microbiology. I'm retaking microbiology, but this makes me wonder if nursing is for me and if I should I just go to grad school for counseling psych like I planned. Nursing was always something I wanted to do and I feel like I gave it my best shot.

My plan is to continue the pre-reqs for nursing and apply to both programs in the fall. I'm a loser .

hey, cut yourself some slack! first of all, you took on quite a courseload with A&P, chem and micro, whatever your circumstances. your grades in A&P and chem are respectable and you have a plan for micro. you didn't say what your problems with micro were, but i'm sure having gone through it once you'll do much better the next time. don't give up on nursing yet, and more importanly, don't give up yourself and your aspirations. nursing takes resilience and persistence and it seems like you have both qualities, so just stay positive and focused and listen to your intuition (p.s. your intuition would never call you names so stop it :clown:). best of luck to you!

Snowii,

First and foremost you are far from a loser. You dished yourself up a pretty big plate of science kick*** with those three courses. Those three courses taken alone with non science courses are hard. That is if you did not figure in family, friends, work, kids, bf/so; I'm not sure which or if all of those apply to you. You would of had to of been very disciplined and studied a lot to get good grades in all of those classes taken together. So with that being said, lets drop the loser talk and accept the past for what it is, the past. you cant change the grades now.

I would definitely retake microbiology, and now you know what is in store for the class and have part of the knowledge of the class. That is a plus. And take it alone or with some easier non-science courses.

Now as far as being a nurse or a counselor this is something only you can answer for yourself. Have you ever worked as a CNA? or Volunteered at a hospital or shadowed a nurse in a hospital? Try one of these and test it out for yourself before you give up on your dream and get stuck doing something you might not fully love. If you find it is something that you love doing then the hard work and extra time to get there will only be that much sweeter when the goal is reached.

I wish you well in your endeavor and with a little hard work I am sure you will get there. You need to first stop doubting yourself no matter which path you choose. I hope this helps and if I can help in any way just give me a shout.

just my 2:twocents:

Hey Snowii,

The truth is, everyone makes mistakes. It sounds like you've learned a lesson in how to pace yourself and avoiding future academic overloads. You have a great rebound plan and you are not screwed. Nurses need life experience and need to be able to plan a new course of action when plan A or B doesn't quite work. Nursing schools review your entire package, and will see your recovery after the little slip you had in Micro this semester.

I can personally attest to an entire junior year of mistakes in academic overload as well as personal problems that contributed to an academic atrocity on my transcript (well below a 2.0 average for junior year). I recovered Senior year and graduated Magna Cum Laude during my graduate coursework. However, that junior year melt down always reminds me over how I rebounded after a huge setback.

We can do anything we set our minds to. Don't let averages, test scores, and statistics scare you. If you want to be a nurse, keep trying and praying and you will be a nurse. Keep your head up sis :)

Taking chemistry and A&P 1 together is a nono, and plus microbiology on top of it. This load was almost impossible for most people to pass. You did good in A&P and chem. Did you talk with your advisor before taking that load?

Hi, please don't feel too bad. Ive just gone through the same thing that you have. I took a&p 1 in the fall semester along with Techinical math, Lifespan Psych, and Tech Writing. I got a C in A&P and a D in tech math. Those are two of the pre-reqs that i needed to apply for the ADN program for the Fall of 09. Now Im going to have to retake these classes. I was very depressed at first when i saw my grades, beause of all of the work i put in on these classes. But then I was happy to have a second chance at taking these courses. I plan to work harder and retake these classes in the spring. Good luck with your classes and please take your time.

I don't think you are a failure at all. Your grades are good for the course load!! I would have never passed Anatomy with another science course. My advice to you is to simply cut your academic load down. Take one science course (maybe two only if you can handle it) per semester. However, some people can take that load and do fine. It all depends on you. Let this be a wakeup call. It doesn't mean you aren't fit for nursing! Nurses can only do so much at a time!

Ditto this.

Hey,,

No one is perfect. It sounds to me you already have another plan of action.

Now go apply yourself like you've never done before. Keep your head up always!!!

Yeah, like other said. That courseload was too rough. Many schools (well mine) had A&P I and II as prerequisites for Microbiology. And chemistry can be a real challenge if you don't "get" it. I think you can learn a real valueable lesson from this, and not overextend yourself (willingly) again. I learned a lot from a class I slacked off in (mainly, not to slack off). Often you learn something (not directly related to the topic) about courses. This time, you learned that 3 hard science courses at once is an incredibly challenging or impossible goal.

Geez, if one lousy "F" makes one a loser then I'm a big one. Add to those F's at least one D and whole host of C's and you've got my transcript in your hand. And neither of us are losers.

And, I (eventually) made it into nursing school -- albeit with enough work to prove that those grades were anomalies.

Don't give up on yourself and certainly don't put yourself down. My 40+ years of living have taught me that there are enough jerks in the world who'll put me down that I don't need to give them any help. And neither do you.

If you want to be a nurse then keep at it.
