Hey you..with the trashy blonde hair

Nurses General Nursing

Ahhhhhhhh....here we go........AGAIN.... This time it's personal.

After a meeting at work a month ago, my boss called me on my cell, as I was driving home, to say, "what is your natural hair color?" I said, "Well, it's probably a light brunette. Why do you ask?" She said, "Go dark. To be honest, your hair is so light it looks borderline trashy."

Yes, I was dumbfounded. She hired me, blonde hair and all. And NOW says I look "trashy". (I've asked several other people, including my own mother...who is completely honest)...and other nurses who said, "Are you kidding me? I wouldn't say that to anyone, even if I didn't like them!"

She must have known she upset me, because she called me at work the following day (when I was doing triage and the phone was ringing off the hook) to say "Did I upset you?" I told her she didn't. But yes!!! She did, and I wasn't about to get into it at work. I have since told her that her comment hurt my feelings. I have received NO apology.

Also, yesterday an MA in the office drew up several flu shots in advance and had them in the side rack in the refrigerator. Had a nurse flow appt, have been TOLD to use them, as it "saves time". Isn't it a cardinal rule for nurses to NEVER administer a med/vaccine without drawing it up yourself or at least WITNESSING it?????? I told her I didn't feel comfortable using it. She got angry, grabbed the pt chart, while things were falling on the floor, refused to listen to my explanation as to WHY. When I tried to explain it to her she raised her voice and said, "I'm NOT going to argue with you!" Then proceded to go around the corner, put me down to other nurses, and that was that.

A few days ago she asked me if I did venipuncture. I said, "No. We weren't taught that in nursing school." She says well MY nursing program taught us to...we had to do 200 blood draws to even GRADUATE." (BTW, it bothers me that she says nursing school...I have ultimate respect for medical assistants, as some have taught me how to do an EKG and other clinical skills I wasn't taught in school.) She then said, in front of 3 other MA's, "Where did YOU go to school at??"

And so I said, "This lil teensy school in the middle of a farrrrm. We practissssed givin' injectinz on hot dogs for an hour....then they cut us loose on clinicals to give 'em with our clinical instructerz." :clown:(This is all true, btw....we didn't spend but one day on giving injections...we spent a lot more time on assessments.) I tried to explain the differences in what they teach nurses...she rolls her eyes and says, "I can't believe that! I got more nursing training at "x institute".

Today I'm done with this organization. I'm the only nurse in the float pool....the MA's (not all) have literally criticized me, humiliated me, and my boss thinks I'm filthy trashy.

I quit. I'm tired of having too many panic attacks and "Loose BM's" from nerves from these people.:flamesonb

thanks for the vent....I'm so happy to have All Nurses to come to for support, advice, venting, you name it.:[anb]:

A little assertiveness training would be helpful in these situations. It teaches you how to stand up for yourself while not going overboard or getting rude when someone is giving it to you. :)

Good move getting out!

Emma, the doorknob wouldn't have hit me in the butt on the way out! Good move! What a bunch of rude, ignorant morons!:sasq:

I can identify with the loose stools and anxiety ridden nights. You deserve better. I hope you find a great place to work.

Emma, what a rude "person", for want of a more appropriate word! Hey , if your Mama thinks your hair isn't "trashy!!!" , then its not! Mothers are the source of truth! She would be the one to tell you if your hair was wrong, so if she thinks it's gorgeous, then it's gorgeous!

Toss your beautiful hair, and work with a person who's not jealous of you and you locks!!

Somedays, I wish I had the courage to go from Black to blonde!!!

Borderline trashy? Someone actually had the brass to say that? In a professional setting? That would meet my definition of trashy ! As for the rest of it, sounds like a hostile work environment. I don't think I would subject myself to two weeks more worth of garbage.

Good move. Good luck!

Sorry, but I would have had some choice words for her about the hair. My favorite being said accompanied by the middle finger.

Those MA's are just jealous. No way in hell would I give a med someone else drew up. I learned my lesson on that the very hard way. I had a pt who had been having seizures all night. I had been giving him the scheduled ativan- In the middle of the night I heard the charge nurse YELLING for all the nurses to RUN to his room. I was a brand new nurse-ran in, yep, he was still seizing like he had been all night. She runs in with a syringe and says "Give him this" Me, the dumb new-grad says "Duh, okay" and it turns out that she didn't even check the mar to see what had been given before drawing about a whole bunch of Ativan. Stupid me, it was my pt, my mistake. She said afterwards, "You'll have to write yourself up for that." So I did, just as I had written here. I learned my lesson well! Also, the pt was fine. I muttered those choice words the entire drive home.

That's so unprofessional...I'm a manager & if I ever said aything like that (not that I ever would, 1st rule is don't get personal) I would totally expect to get a reprimand (& probably worse) from my DON. I would leave just over that issue alone. :angryfire

Second, you're a LICENSED NURSE & we all know we don't inject what we did not draw up - the MA doesn't understand this because she's NOT A NURSE!! I've worked with some great MAs who taught me things I didn't learn in school (EKGs, venipuncture) but these particular MAs you're working with are on some power trip that management has allowed & played into - judging by your boss's comment about your hair.

I would resign with a full explanation to the DON, administrator & HR, no notice (because of the situation created by your boss & the anxiety it's caused you I'd also try to get ALL paid time you have coming to you), & find something that doesn't cause bowel spasms ;)!

Good Luck!!

take a deep breath....now repeat after me....

you can never be too blonde....

you can never be too blonde....

you can never be too blonde....

and it's not trashy....i call it "better living through chemistry technology" i suspect that may have hurt more than the poor treatment from the mas...

good luck with your new job!!

dria (who doesn't know what her natural haircolor is either)

i have worked with nurses who would come in with all kinds of different styles and colors some i really liked and some i didn't really feel was flattering but NO ONE ever said anything about it

learn all you can..a lot of things are not touched on in school and the more you learn the better nurse you will be..insist on being shown and on having someone with you until you are comfortable with the procedure

i am hope that you find the right job with good co-workers

unprofessional work environment - well - actually unprofessional people working in the place

Hope you find a better job

Thanks for all your posts....You had me laughing so hard!!!!!!!

I couldn't agree more with learning all you can. You just brought up another problem I had with this particular MA....she did not WANT to teach me these things. And my belief on that is that she would no longer have "something over me". There were a few incidences...one was with doing a PT/INR. They have a portable device much like that of a glucometer to do these. I had never done one (we've always had people go to the lab for a draw), and one time when I asked, she simply did it, as fast as she could stating that it was just "easier if I do it". I told her, "I hope you don't mind, but the next time you have one could you walk me through it?" And nope...she didn't. Like I said, I think that it was a power kick she was on, and the belief that nurses don't know jack diddly. She truly believed that she was a "better nurse" because she did all of these skills. She couldn't believe her nursing school...YES...she said nursing school....taught her more than me.

So...a few times I tried to explain that nursing is a different field. We're taught different things, like patient assessment and nursing care. I could NOT get a word in edgewise with her; she was still stuck in her own world.

Now, on to the letter of resignation. I want to start it like Alfalfa from Little Rascals in the movie:

Dear Darla,

I hate your stinking guts......

hehe....better living through chemical technology....priceless.

Thanks for the support and laughs and suggestions!!!!!
