Hey you..with the trashy blonde hair

Nurses General Nursing

Ahhhhhhhh....here we go........AGAIN.... This time it's personal.

After a meeting at work a month ago, my boss called me on my cell, as I was driving home, to say, "what is your natural hair color?" I said, "Well, it's probably a light brunette. Why do you ask?" She said, "Go dark. To be honest, your hair is so light it looks borderline trashy."

Yes, I was dumbfounded. She hired me, blonde hair and all. And NOW says I look "trashy". (I've asked several other people, including my own mother...who is completely honest)...and other nurses who said, "Are you kidding me? I wouldn't say that to anyone, even if I didn't like them!"

She must have known she upset me, because she called me at work the following day (when I was doing triage and the phone was ringing off the hook) to say "Did I upset you?" I told her she didn't. But yes!!! She did, and I wasn't about to get into it at work. I have since told her that her comment hurt my feelings. I have received NO apology.

Also, yesterday an MA in the office drew up several flu shots in advance and had them in the side rack in the refrigerator. Had a nurse flow appt, have been TOLD to use them, as it "saves time". Isn't it a cardinal rule for nurses to NEVER administer a med/vaccine without drawing it up yourself or at least WITNESSING it?????? I told her I didn't feel comfortable using it. She got angry, grabbed the pt chart, while things were falling on the floor, refused to listen to my explanation as to WHY. When I tried to explain it to her she raised her voice and said, "I'm NOT going to argue with you!" Then proceded to go around the corner, put me down to other nurses, and that was that.

A few days ago she asked me if I did venipuncture. I said, "No. We weren't taught that in nursing school." She says well MY nursing program taught us to...we had to do 200 blood draws to even GRADUATE." (BTW, it bothers me that she says nursing school...I have ultimate respect for medical assistants, as some have taught me how to do an EKG and other clinical skills I wasn't taught in school.) She then said, in front of 3 other MA's, "Where did YOU go to school at??"

And so I said, "This lil teensy school in the middle of a farrrrm. We practissssed givin' injectinz on hot dogs for an hour....then they cut us loose on clinicals to give 'em with our clinical instructerz." :clown:(This is all true, btw....we didn't spend but one day on giving injections...we spent a lot more time on assessments.) I tried to explain the differences in what they teach nurses...she rolls her eyes and says, "I can't believe that! I got more nursing training at "x institute".

Today I'm done with this organization. I'm the only nurse in the float pool....the MA's (not all) have literally criticized me, humiliated me, and my boss thinks I'm filthy trashy.

I quit. I'm tired of having too many panic attacks and "Loose BM's" from nerves from these people.:flamesonb

thanks for the vent....I'm so happy to have All Nurses to come to for support, advice, venting, you name it.:[anb]:

thats so unprofessional!!!

Sorry you've had to go through that. You're a better one than me though because I would have given them what they gave me in tenfold. I know it's childish, but I don't take well to being insulted or talked down to, so I make it a point to treat the offender just as they've treated me, but worse, just to prove a point and make sure the offending behavior does not continue.

It's a good thing they could not read my MIND....because there were some ugly thoughts going on in my head...believe me....

You know, honestly what I wanted to do was tell her what I thought. Her and the coworker. But I was with the belief that I had to keep this job, and well....my former boss called me this morning to tell me of opportunities opening in 2 weeks. (I called her yesterday). I'm not so sure that any job is worth waking in the middle of the night with anxiety, coming home and being irritable, stomach/bowel issues, and consistently having my confidence shattered.

Is it ok to state the reason for my resignation is the way I was treated and cite examples? My friends say that someone (I guess that someone being ME) needs to put an end to it and let the organization know how the employees are treated.

Not to be pessimistic, but I doubt things would change. I spoke with the office manager yesterday (the office I was working at) and she told me that the LPN working for her NOW was working for the float pool manager. This LPN was looking to get in this office permanently and the "boss" assured her she was "working on it". Well the office mgr tells me that this "boss" never let her know so SHE snagged her from the float pool and hired her. I've also been told that there are 4 other LPNS that quit the float pool d/t being treated badly by her.

Oh my! Yes, get another job. Reminds me of a job I had at a Pediatric Clinic. The place was run by a MA and the docs thought she was the poo. Final straw was when she came into my room where I was giving an immunization and proceeded to show me where the shot should be given! Mind you, I had been a nurse for about 10 years and had just come from a public health job heavily involved with immunizations!

Rude comment about the hair- sounds like they are insecure and only feel better by cutting others down. (((hugs))))

That is unbelievable!! I thought my manager came up with some doozies. :uhoh21:

When an employee resigns at my place of work they are given an exit interview with HR. I would be bringing this up there.

That really stinks.

Absolutely quit that job. You don't need to be in such a toxic, unprofessional environment. Apparently these folks don't know the meaning of "rude" and the MA could've been drawing up saline for all you know, so you were right on there, too.

*Someone offered me a med they'd drawn up but I refused to give it. Come to find out, it was 10X the strength. Scary moment for me, but that taught me a lesson, because I almost caved in and did it.

Another poster basically said that she gives it right back and then some, but again, it's unprofessional to do that and can cause you to get into more trouble than the original problem person.

There are much, much better jobs out there. I wish you the best.

Let us know how it goes, ok? We like to share in successes too.

I'm sure there was a lot you could have said about her appearance. What a nasty person she is.

I've always liked blondes, and especially trashy ones...but maybe that's just me...

Best of luck, and congratulations getting out of that dump. I do get some meds from our pharmacy pre-drawn in syringes (Lantus, flu and pneumonia vaccines) and I've given them, but it's a little unnerving. I'm sure a PharmD is qualified to draw up 50 units of Lantus, and I can (and do) verify that it's 50 units. But I have also (rarely) caught pharmacy errors, so it would be a comfort to see the med come out of the vial.

Just reading your post, it's clear who the trashy ones are at that place...and believe me, it isn't you.

Best of luck in your next job. It has to get better than that!

I just cannot believe that this woman called you on your cell phone while not at work to make a PERSONAL comment about your hair. That is unprofessional, tacky and spiteful. I have a thing about saying things to people that do not ask my opinion. Even if I felt that way, unless it is demeaning to the person's image as a professional, I would not say anything. In fact, I do not mention to people when I notice that they gain or lose weight; for example, because that is a personal thing. The person knows how they look and don't need me to make the comment.

I am glad you left those SOBs...blonde hair and all!! You should die it Platinum, go visit and moon them.
