HELP! torn

Published

Hi all. I graduate this May, 2010 and am torn by a recent event. I currently am a student nurse at a hospital near-by, however I recently got another student nurse job on a pediatrics floor taht will most likely (90%) lead to a graduate nurse job in May. I am very very excited because I really think I am giong to LOVE pediatrics but here is the problem > I have to miss two days of school, one class and one clinical. Long story short..my school is NOT HAPPY. I have gotten 3-4 emails talking about how i need to make school a priority and how i should worry about getting through the program 1st before anything else in my life, and now I look like a really bad student because I really want to go forward with this job opportunity. Now I can make up the clinical and the class, but now my school looks down on me and I'm worried they will find a way to fail me. i dont know what to do? I really want this job and I can make up the missed time but i also dont want to spend the last 4 months of school being looked-down upon as a bad student. HELP

Take a look at your student handbook or academic requirements catalogue. See what the policy is for unexcused absences (absences that are not health-related). In the BSN program at my University, one unexcused absence from clinical means an automatic failure in the course (and delaying your graduation for 12 months).

I've never heard of a student basically freelancing and "getting a job as a student nurse" I can see why the school would be ticked, because you're jumping the gun as it were.

I don't understand why you need to miss 2 days of school to pursue this if they want to hire you"90%" as a new grad. If they want you that badly why can't they wait til you graduate from school?

My advice- your focus is on school, 100%. 3-4 e-mails does not bode well for you lasting until May. In fact, you may need to do some repair work. You won't be a new grad anywhere if you don't successfully finish school.

Hope it all works out, though! Pediatrics is awesome.

You can't be a graduate nurse if you don't graduate . School first......There's no shortage of nursing jobs.

its a student nurse internship. you are with a nurse doing everything, your job title is actually STUDENT NURSE ASSISTANT. they hire you as a GN/RN over outsiders because its an easier transition becuase you've already been doing it .

I checked the handook, thanks, I can miss 2 or more clinicals in a 6 weeks course or up to 4 in a course longer than that, ( my course is going to be 10 weeks) of course all missed clinical requires a makeup date and fee but according to the handbook I am not at jeopardy of failing up until that point. I have also been in contact with the school about making up the missed lab and I can. I know I CAN do it, I am just not looking forward to the backlash.

As my mother would say...... quit borrowing trouble. It hasn't happened yet, so you are getting all worked up about nothing.

I missed my very first clinical day in NS. (1) it was the orientation day. (2) I spoke to the teacher ahead of time..... here was what I said:

Me: I have a situation I need to discuss with you about the first day of clinical...

Teach: (looking askance) OooooooKaaaaaaay....

Me: That day is my parent's 50th wedding anniversary....

Teach: (looking confused) So?

Me: .....in New York. (I live in FL)

Teach: OH! Well you have to be there! We'll schedule a make up day!

You never know.....:D

i wish they were as nice about it. i've already talked to them and we have all the makeup days set it's just the attitude i get back that upsets me and is what i'm going to have to deal with until i graduate

What happens if you choose to skip this clinical day and end up having some legitimate absence(s) later on in the term -- say, an illness or some kind of actual emergency? None of us know what's going to happen in the future, and I can guarantee you the school won't have any sympathy or cut you any slack if you miss more days later, however compelling the reason, if you choose to take some days off early on.

Something to think about. If where you are working will not work with your NURSING SCHOOL schedule and let you have those days off. Do you really want to work there as a nurse?

You never know what could happen later in the session not to sound harsh but you would be stupid to skip clinical s for a job that is dependent on you graduating from Nursing school.

If they really want you they will still be there once you graduate.
