Help paying for school

Published

I have been accepted into an ADN program. This is my second degree and have almost run out of loans. Does anyone know how I can get money for school? I don't qualify for grants. I llooked into nursing scholarships from surrounding hospitals in exchange for working with tr m after graduation but most of them don't offer it any more. Please help.

I am in the Jackson, Mississippi area

Dear OP,

I'm so sorry you have found yourself in this situation and I'm sorry that some people have been a little harsh on you! I think I may have a viable solution! I earned a BA in music before deciding that nursing was for me, so I know all about running out of financial aid! I was lucky that I got a scholarship and had saved my income tax returns so I am making it! Poor but making it, haha!

Anyway, have you considered applying for an accelerated master's program for second degree students? Since you would be a graduate, it is my understanding that you would then have an increased borrowing limit from the federal government! Of course it would take more time to apply and wait, but it might be worth it!

Good luck to you!

Wow I didn't know that but I will definetly look into it. Thank you

Thank you I will continue to look for more scholarships

Paying off student loans is easier said than done.

Many in here have done it. Also, many new grad RNs having a tough time finding a job. You may find yourself in the same boat. Especially if you don't have a BSN. And even that no longer guarantees a job. Many job markets flooded. I'm from MS, and know nurses there are generally low paid, and not many jobs to be found

Yes, when I went to the financial aid office begging for money lol she told me I should have done the AMNP program because I could have gotten federal aid. Apparently there is a certain amount you can borrow as an undergrad, and can borrow more as a master's student. Anyway, you are not too far from my school, you should check it out!

The first year you get your RN, and the next two years you become a nurse practitioner! Even if you had to put off school and save while applying for a program like this, hey, it's accelerated so you'd still get done fast!

Anyways, I must agree some of the previous posters were rather rude. OP asked a simple question and then got lectured... It was not helpful at all. There's no shame in wanting to better yourself OP. College is ridiculously expensive, but you will earn more so it's an investment. Be patient and don't give up. Let haters hate!

Thank you for the information I will definitely look into it and thank you for understanding unlike previous posters.

Thanks for responding verene. I am in the process of doing that now but I don't know if that will be enough to cover everything. I am trying to save as much as possible.I got my acceptance letter at the beginning of December and the program starts in January so I don't have that much time.

I am practically in the same boat. I already have a BA and don't qualify for federal aid to pursue another degree. I don't want to take out any more student loans as I still have some to pay off. Luckily my program is with the community college and I only have to worry about the core nursing classes. I finished up my pre-requisites, which took about 2 years, but saved me a lot of money. I just took it one course at a time, which was all I could afford.

Right now my first block is costing me about $700, but I paid 40% and then placed myself on a payment plan. That helps a lot! See if you can do that.

Ask family for help. My parents helped me with that 40% down and they are helping me pay for half of my book package which costs $980!!!!

I have also applied for a couple scholarships but I was informed at the end of October of my placement for January that my applications for aid went in very late. So I will try again in the spring for my second block.

Just realize that sure we didn't get ample notice of our start date - but that after the first semester/block we should be able to apply for aid and/or prepare better for the second semester/block!!

Best of luck to you!!

I'm still looking for rude comments...all I'm seeing are comments that are not what the OP wants to hear. That's not rude. That's reality.

OP.. I have no advice but wanted to say that you will find a way. As life goes on we change and I think it is great that you have the drive to go back to school after earning a degree already. It sounds like you have the will and you will find a way!

People were rude and sparky? You must've seen something I didn't see. I am sorry you felt the suggestions provided were "useless."

Lol read back. It's definitely there.
