If you want it bad enough, you WILL find a way. If you don't think you can succeed, you WILL fail. So put your mind to it and find out how to improve your scores. Talk to a few teachers, or even close friends/classmates and realize your faults, so maybe you can gain some insight and overcome your "problems." The best of luck to you!

It is unfortunate that your family isn't more supportive of your educational and career goals. Don't let their negativity and their lack of ambition get in the way of your dreams. Remember that some people, including myself, have accomplished a whole lot without any family support. Rely on your friends instead if your family fails you.

If you want to be a nurse, you should first try to get a taste of what it is really about by volunteering or working in the healthcare or human services field. You may find yourself becoming even more motivated to pursue a career as a nurse. Or you may find it distasteful or not at all what you expected.

Then you should start taking your pre-reqs. Many of your pre-reqs will have pre-reqs that you have to finish. For example, in order to take Anatomy and Physiology, you may have to take an introductory biolgoy classs, which may require a basic English class first. These courses are the foundation of any career in healthcare. Most nursing programs these days wont even allow you to apply unless you have taken most if not all science pre-reqs.

As far as getting good grades are concerned, you can accomplish this in one of three ways. 1. You are already academically inclined and it is already very easy to get good grades. 2. The subject matter is so fascinating that you can't put down your books. (One great thing about nursing is that almost everything you learn, even in your pre-reqs, can be applied to your practice as a nurse). 3. You simply make the decision to do well and envision yourself studying at the same time each day and attending every class and adopting good study habits. Simple visualization is an extremely powerful tool.

Whatever you do, don't let a few defeated people in your family decide your life course for you. Just because they are washouts and haven't accomplished anything more than a minimum wage service industry job and a ten year old used car doesn't mean you have to settle too. If you have to do the LPN-RN-BSN route, go for it!

Hello,
Everyone I just took some placement test to see where I stood before I took prereq classes and did very poorly . I feel very disappointed in myself. I would hate to start taking prereq classes and end up doing bad because my I do not have a soild foundation. So many nursing schools look at test scores and grades so doing well is very important to me. My husband wants me to go to a private school that specialize in getting the my basicis down. I would like to be a nurse so badly and most of my family says I can't do it. I'm not so sure if this is a good idea this school very pricey. Are their any nurses or nursing students who had a simliar problem and if so how did you deal with it? If this problem is too personal you could send me a email. Any help with this is greatly needed.

When I took my placement test I didn't score well in math and I had to take developmental math classes before I was able to sign up for College Algebra.

I also know a lot of people who had to take developmental English classes before they could sign up for the English Composition and Rethoric classes.

Please don't let this discourage you from attempting to become a nurse.

Talk to your counselor and let them tell you where to start....then sign up for those classes, develop your skills and move forward. Go to your Community College to get started, they have all the help that you need available. You may also qualify for financial aid. Good luck and don't let anyone tell you that you can't do it.....YOU CAN DO IT with the appropriate help. Good luck

The only time naysayers have ever been right about me is when I agreed with them. In other words, the only time negative people have been right is when I gave them the power to be correct! I have found that when I do not agree I tend to picture myself successful and I work hard to achieve my goals. In such situations I never fail. Good luck.

I started school, got all A's and passed nclex fine...............

do not listen to negative people. you can do anything you want to if you set yoiur mind to it!!!!!!!

Romie has great advice!

I have a similar problem with some of my family, in that they always take the defeatist viewpoint. The thing is, that viewpoint has nothing to do with YOU and everything to do with them.

Here's what I mean. After college, I briefly was considering med school (out of the blue; I'd never considered it while in college). When I casually mentioned this to my folks, the first words out of my dad's mouth were "You'd never make it through med school." Thanks, Dad.

Well, I decided for reasons of my own that med school wasn't for me anyway. Now, years later, I have decided to pursue nursing and have been accepted to a direct entry Nurse Practitioner program, which starts in a couple short weeks! I even have a scholarship! This is all great news! But what does my dad say now every time the subject of nursing school comes up? He says, "Why didn't you go to med school?" ARGH!

His problem is that LIFE IS NEVER RIGHT FOR HIM. Med school wasn't right, but NOT going to med school isn't right, either. This has nothing to do with ME. No matter what choice I make, it will somehow be the wrong one, in his eyes. Not because he doesn't love me or want me to do well, but because of the way he sees the world.

It is hard to learn not to listen to him, since he is my dad and all, and is supposed to be wise (and he is a very smart man). But I figured out that he just doesn't have the right perspective to give me truly helpful advice or counsel about my life. (This is why I didn't tell my parents that I was even considering changing careers to start nursing until after I'd done all my research, made my decision, completed all the applications, and received the acceptances. At that point my mind was made up and no amount of negativity could influence my path. It is still painful to listen to, but I can just roll my eyes now without be burdened by second-guessing myself.)

It sounds like your husband is supportive, and I think he has the right idea! Get a solid foundation in the basics, not just because the info is important, but because of the confidence you'll have going in to the nursing school process (which will be priceless!).

Mydee there may be factors as to why you did poorly. Have you been out of school awhile and simply couldnt remember the stuff? Making a trail will make you more confident and more susceptible to getting a job after you graduate.. such as doing something like:cna, lvn, rn.. or emt-b, lvn, rn.. prove a little to yourself at a time to build your confidence.I wish you the best!

Girl PLEASE... go take your pre-classes and get them over with.. Do you know how many times I have failed placement test.. I am the queen of it (well just the math part of it). These test are a bunch of junk and are no way a indicator of what kind of nurse you will be... Re take it, get you a book and look at what you need to focus on and study up. DO NOT let this get you down and forget your dreams... Many people fail these test and go on to be quite sucessfull.....Dont listen to people that say you cant do it......Because you can!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
