Healthier Living Support Thread: PART TWO!

Nurses Stress 101

Published

Ok folks, time has come to Start anew.......over 1000 posts means LOTS of bandwidth use here at allnurses.com. So I have been asked to remedy the situation.....

Anyhow, I have enjoyed so much your sharing, help and support here on the Healthier Living Thread....let's keep it up!!!!!:)

QOD: What is your favorite "old" or "new" healthy food/recipe? Care to share?

I have "rediscovered" oatmeal. Yep old fashioned good ole Quaker Oats-----the slow cooked kind.....with raisins, a bit of cinnamon and some Splenda.....YUMMY. Eating this as my dh's cholesterol and lipid counts were very high---trying to clean up my own dietary practices to help him with his....anyhow.....

Anyone else? As you change/grow/develop new tastes, what are your "old" or "new" healthier-choice favorites??? Care to share????

I just had a turkey breast (not the sliced, but the real thing) with swiss cheese (one piece of whole wheat bread and broiled in the oven until melted) and it was really good. I really don't like Swiss cheese but for some reason I liked it now.

I also found out that when I eat the diet meal, I'm almost satisfied, but if I wait about 10 or 20 minutes, I'm fully satisfied. I think the trick is to eat until almost full.

Good luck to everyone on their new years goal.

Hiya. Gonna get serious about this now.

I saw a commercial on tv and there was a very obese woman just shoveling food into her mouth while she ate her meal, not paying attention to what she was doing, not even really tasting or enjoying what she was eating. I thought "OMG I eat like that." Not all the time, but enough to make me know that my habits have a huge effect on my weight. I'm not in the obese range, but I'm not all that far from it, either.

I'm joining WW tomorrow-they're closed today, for some face-to-face support.

I'll slow down and really know what I'm eating.

I'll eat only at the table, not in front of the tv, not in front of the computer.

I'll check in to this thread daily.

Anyway, Angie, good to see you back. What were you riding? A bike, a motorcycle, a horse?

Traci, welcome. One step at a time.

Right now I have to get my asthma under control and my foot healed right before any real exercise, but I can do my little beginner AM yoga with Rodney Yee.

Tweety, since you are the one who seems to do the most yoga around here, you can be our resident yogi. :)

Have a wonderful day all.

Happy 2006 Everyone I would like to join your thread. I need some serious help loosing weight and getting healthy!

I need to loose 75-100 pounds!

I will be following a low fat, low calorie eating plan. Does anyone have any recipes for meals, snacks, etc.. or just any good advice for me? I know this is going to be one of the hardest things that I have ever done, but I have to loose the weight before I develop serious health problems. Right now I am 235 lbs,(5'7") my cholesterol is 340, I have high BP and I know that I am at high risk for heart disease and diabetes, as well as other health problems/diseases. I really do not have any will power and never seem to be able to stay on a diet or exercise program. I am going to start walking on my treadmill and doing Yoga also. I HAVE to make some serious lifestyle changes, I want to be healthy, and certainly wouldn't mind looking great either. I really need some support. Anyone willing to help me out, even if its just some good old fashion encouragement?

I look forward to getting to know you all better. I am going to go back and finish reading each post on this thread so that I will be able to give each of you support too.

Don't make it too low calorie or you'll end up defeating your purpose. I think the recommendations are no lower than 1200 calories a day. For the very overweight 1500 calories is a good start.

You drop your calories too fast your body will go into survival mode and your metabolism will drop like a rock. Then you won't lose weight even if you're practically starving yourself.

I plan to eat between 1500 and 1600 calories a day, if I go lower than that to start with I really will starve:rotfl:

Anyway, Angie, good to see you back. What were you riding? A bike, a motorcycle, a horse?

I bought a nice touring bike. It has what I call a "Salvation" fit--it fits me just as I am. ;) I've been riding it and working on increasing my metabolism and mobility. I'll add a swim in the pool once the weather warms up.

Not concentrating on diet just yet, just counting on exercise to help me throw off the funk I was in. I think the diet changes will follow once I get my head together again.

It takes time, but it'll happen.

It's nice to be able to share ideas.

Here's a quick snack for you low-cal people: sugar-free Jello and sugar-free Cool Whip topping. Both are zero calories.

Sometimes that's all you need for a little treat.

Hiya Tweety--that cartoon says it all. Thanks for posting it. I'll refer to it every day! :)

Hi everyone, I think I would like to join in the thread too. Tweety, love the cartoon, I am printing it and posting it. Exercise seems to be the hardest thing to fit in my schedule right now. I am doing well with my weight loss, but I know with exercise it could be much better. For the record, I am down 88 lbs since July, (100 more to go!) still doing well with dietary restrictions and no complications Woo Hoo!! I saw my surgeon in Nov and he said around 6 mo post op I should expect to see a slow down in my loss, but I can up my physical activity and keep that burn going!

Will try to keep on here and make myself more accountable for my exercise.

I get to be the resident yogi! Woot!

Cat, I sometimes shovel my food in too. They say if you slow down and eat mindfully it's better for the diet and weight loss.

Michelle, welcome to the thread, I hope you post often. We all here need to make lifestyle changes so you are in good company.

Hi Suzy! Glad you liked the cartoon.

Hi Lori! Welcome to the thread, I hope you too post often. Congrats on the weight loss. Exercise definately is a challenge to make a lifestyle, but you gotta do it.

Kiyatylese, that is awesome congratulations!

Steph, I was/am the same way. Everytime I started a diet, it was "I'll restart tomorrow instead, I can't today". Which is why I picked a day in the future a few weeks ago and stuck to it. The diet I choose is class Glycemic Impact Diet. Here's the description. It's similar I think to the Zone or South Beach. The idea is to eat meals to keep blood glucose levels from being too high or too low, and to each often to keep your metablism going. Women have a lower caloric intake on this diet I believe. We'll see when I weight in on Monday what the verdict is. I like that fact that I haven't been too hungry, and they make up a diet for you and if you follow it you stay within their caloric restrictions and the carb/protein/fat ratio and the guesswork is taken out of it. There are lots of other diets you can pick on ediets, this is just the one that suits me. (Now I sound like a commercial)

Thanks.

Actually, I've always done pretty well with a diet for awhile - I did the Atkins one with my husband a few years ago and lost 8# right away.

I think I'm just tired of dieting. And my body is probably resistant to change now - I'm in my 40's after all. I've never been more than 10 or 15 pounds overweight - people seem surprised when I tell them how much I weigh. But then I wear loose clothing and I'm a bit taller so I can handle some weight w/o looking like I'm fat.

Winter doldrums make it harder - but in the end it is all within my own power. I'm the one grabbing for the chips and salsa, right?

I'm the one who needs to get up off this chair and hit the treadmill. Or take a walk.

The downpour has stopped for awhile - maybe after church I'll take a walk with my son while he rides his bike. I need some outside time.

Hi kids - just checking in!

My bipolar is more stable, stupid doctor.... stupid me ... I had a horrid reaction to Geodon (akathesia - severe!) last year and ended up with psych inpatient x3 and outpatient day treatment x 3 - horrid!

And THIS year was put on Seroquel due to increased hypomania and the more wiggy I got the more he upped the Seroquel - I kept telling him that it was the med causing my increased agitation and restlessness and wanting to somehow remove myself from my body - UGH - finally got to the bottom of it last week and I am 80% better with d/c ing the med!

Good news is that my distress caused me to really care for myself physically, with diet improvement and activity - I did lose 13 lb in 2 mo - partly due to a one-week flu with n/v still 3 weeks later, but also cuz I stopped putting in so much sugar and flour, and walked and prayed and just got thru it with the prayers and support of wonderful friends :D
