Healthier Living Support Thread: PART TWO!

Nurses Stress 101

Published

Ok folks, time has come to Start anew.......over 1000 posts means LOTS of bandwidth use here at allnurses.com. So I have been asked to remedy the situation.....

Anyhow, I have enjoyed so much your sharing, help and support here on the Healthier Living Thread....let's keep it up!!!!!:)

QOD: What is your favorite "old" or "new" healthy food/recipe? Care to share?

I have "rediscovered" oatmeal. Yep old fashioned good ole Quaker Oats-----the slow cooked kind.....with raisins, a bit of cinnamon and some Splenda.....YUMMY. Eating this as my dh's cholesterol and lipid counts were very high---trying to clean up my own dietary practices to help him with his....anyhow.....

Anyone else? As you change/grow/develop new tastes, what are your "old" or "new" healthier-choice favorites??? Care to share????

Thanks. I'm 100% better and was only sick for two days, thank goodness. I used to go years without getting sick. Now it seems like every year or two. Actually it was about a year and a half the last time I was this sick. Oh well, I can't complain as I'm better now. :lol2:

Atkins was big on avacodoes too. They are low carb and good for the heart (which can counter act the high saturated fat intake of his diet).

Glad you heal so well. I go in spurts of getting sick easily and avoiding everything - I think it goes hand in hand with my stress level. For some reason, I always get sick waaaaaaaaay after everybody else has had it and gotten over it - don't know what's up with that. Oh well, at least I'm not a 'sickly' person by nature - thank goodness.

Good to know with the avs. since I am trying to avoid the carbs. Of course, I can't avoid fruit - that is one thing that I'm not going to quit eating. Yesterday we had watermelon after supper and it was soooooo yummy!

sddlnscp, thanks for your response! I'd definitely appreciate any advice/info that folks have to offer.

Hi Wonka ~

As I said above, we don't pay attention to: Calories, this or that, and our family is healthy, active & slim.

The way we achieve/maintain this is:

First, we gratefully eat foods simply as God created them for us: organic-veggies (in chef-salads, or baked), and fruits (raw, or in smoothies), baked/grilled meats/fish, tea - and too, we also enjoy foods like avocadoes, sour cream, our homemade cheese-cake & fudge. Yet, like I said, at 110 - I'm not challenged weight-wise, even at 55 yrs. chronologically. (Well, truth be told, I'm 5.5 yrs. young, L:DL) - Hey, don't laugh, whatever succeeds, eh?

Further, we do take a comprehensive MV-M, and on occasion acidophilus; but no medications at all. And

we decided skipping "going for Dr. check-ups" - and using that money, on activities more enjoyably meaningful for us like *Skating*! ~

(otoh, my 3 other siblings depend on doctors regularly - and they've got all the researched-diseases/pains warned about: diabetes, depression, heart dis-ease, fractures, panic-attacks, strokes, you-name-it).

But we remain free. Imagine, you can expect it also, and your *mind* will create what you want, and pay attention to... Yup, you can have your cake and eat it to too :wink2:

You've probably figgered this out already, and it's True: (crime&accidents aside), What you choose to want & expect, your own mind will set-out to create as your *repeated/perpetual* reality...have you noticed this already also? :)

Welcome, Cheerfulsong! I'd love to hear more about your skating!

Well tho I have not won any "*Metal*-medals", (our skating friends think of my own story as remarkably inspirational) -

*Ice-skating* is wonderful ;) exercise (I know of many adult-skaters who began out of concern for their spine, decreasing-flexibility, strength, balance & endurance - who not only re-gained their former abilities, but exceed them now - including more dependable bone-density, Yeah!

Currently I am learning skills in all 4 Basic-classes, that our private coach is helping me gain. (My coach was a *Senior lady* in her day (you know, the kind you see on TV - at "Nationals"). I surely appreciate & love her! :icon_hug:

Might you be interested in knowing more, there's the

or the

I'll be pleased to share with you, more! :balloons: Enjoy!

Annie, sounds like you definatley have it going on and can offer quite a lot to this thread. Thanks for sharing.

I appreciate the mind-body connection and try to stay away from MDs myself and am mercifully on no medications. However, to the general public I can't recommend not getting regular checks for preventative purposes. I just don't practice what I preach. :)

Hello :)

I just discovered this thread and all I can say is "WOW"!!!

I'm only on page 9 or so...I imagine it will take a week or more for me to read through most of the posts. I really try to practice healthy living but I'm always looking for ideas to improve.

When I was in high school, I volunteered and shopped at a food co-op in town (thank goodness I grew up in a progressive college town). My dad fully supported my lifestyle choices - he'd help me make foods for myself (I was a vegan for 6 years and a vegetarian for 3, rest of my family is/was not) to ensure I was getting adequate nutrition since I was very athletic.

These days I'm no longer a vegetarian but I'm not really a carnivore, either. I'll eat meat, but I don't find myself craving it. :) I tend to eat fish more than anything.

I look forward to learning from this thread. The past year and I'm guessing the next 2 years will be challenging. I work full-time and I'm headed to nursing school in the fall. It's easy to be lax when it comes to exercise and diet, but for me there is such a connection to exercise/diet and my sense of well-being that I really try to continue to make it a priority.

Right now, I pack all of my meals so that I can make the "right" choices and I invested in an ellipse machine to use during the school-year. I prop my notes on the bookrest and study while I workout. I do look forward to breaks, though, so that I can get out there and run, bike or swim (ok, swimming is at an indoor pool teehee). After nursing school I'd love to get back into triathlons or maybe a marathon if my knees will hold out.

Off to study, I've alreayd rambled too long but I'm excited about this thread!!

cheers

Hi Tweety ~

oh sowwy, I thought I was sharing with fellow-nurses, not the "General-public". ~ And

yes, I learned in Nursing-school in the 70's that I "must sell my soul" to work in this profession; so I understand what you mean.

I shared with the best of intentions!, for people's finest, most optimal Well-being... &

hope you realize this :)

Annie

Cheerfulsong, nice to meet you.

It's great to have something your passionate about that also keeps you youthful. Tell me more about this "positive 100 thoughts" thing.

Hi again Tweety ~

I thought "What is this person asking me about?" - only to realize I had made a minor "typo" in my post; sowwy! :imbar

(That 'plus'-sign was supposed to have been a "%"-sign instead, reading like this: I'm a'wonderin - Are other nurses here at (all.nurses) who enjoy sharing *100% positive ideas* with each other, for encouraging each other in them - as simply I really enjoy being around more such folks...

Makes good sense? :D

Also, our Figure-skatin' is part of a dozen journeys, we engage passionately... We simply believe that in completely immersing/enjoying ourselves in FUN Win Win situations, we *honor & praise God* who created us just for such purposes... :welcome:

rn2be, glad you found us. You're post #1000!!!!! There were actually 1000 posts on another thread too.

Perhaps Deb might want to start Part III!

That's a good idea to study while you work out. I find sometimes even going half-time I drop exercise to write a paper or because "I need the break because I've been working so hard". Trying to keep it a priority is not easy.

What kind of lunches do you pack? I'm caught in a rut of veggie burgers, salad and fruit.

I'm sure you will have a lot to offer. Please continue to share.

I made it to the gym this afternoon, after telling myself I was too busy. I'm glad I did. I'm always glad I work out when I do, just getting there is the battle.

Opps. I missed this post earlier.

Yes, Annie it makes sense now. I thought there was some book or program

"100 positive thoughts". LOL

I love being around positive people, they energize me, and I can feel good energy from you. I'll strive to be as positive as I can. But I'm going to be honest. Life is tough and stressful and my constitution is such that I can't be 100% positive all the time, otherwise I'm in denial of my true feelings. Sometimes I have to sift through the negative to become positive again. So please forgive me if I can't make that goal.

But sharing positive ideas as opposed to negative ones, I can do. :)

Just saying hi! My moods are staying pretty steady, thank God! Just a bit of depression (chemical imbalance versus situational). Anxiety a bit much but I did start doing some trial work periods this week in SPITE of that! (I have been out on disability for bipolar and anxiety disorder). Starting REAL slow and working my way up.

Unfortunately, being on depakote, which is responsible for my improved MENTAL health, has really made me put on weight. I am told it shuts off the signal you should receive when you have had enough food, and that description fits! Plus, financially, I haven't been able to get the quality of food that would help me with weight loss. I've gained 12 lb since January. With beginning work, the $ will be better AND I will be more active.

I did walk last week, plus go out on my bike twice (it was BEAUTIFUL! here in Maine!) and I hope to keep doing so, and walking Yeah right, little fitness angel, that's me! ROFL!

Well anyway, I have been reading you guys' posts and wanted to check in! xoxox

What kind of lunches do you pack? I'm caught in a rut of veggie burgers, salad and fruit.

I don't pack anything too thrilling - especially on those days where I'm packing lunch and dinner. My staple is yogurt mixed with the Kashi Nutty Nuggets and a banana or fresh berries. I find it to be extraordinarily filling so that tends to be my "main course" most nights for dinner.

I also found these wonderful Thomas' whole grain bagels that are easy to pack (front pocket of the bookbag for the win!). I'm a big grazer as opposed to a rigid meal eater so I tend to pack lots of small things (cheese, the no sugar added applesauces, fresh fruit/veggies, nuts, dry cereal, whole grain cereal bars, granola bars, pretzels - I'm a Kashi addict).

Pretty much the items mentioned above and salads and veggies and fruits. Unfortunately, during the school year I find myself eating a lot of the same foods. :( Also, I will go 3-4 days eating salads then once the greens run out I have to wait until I have time to hit the store again to get more. I can't wait until time is not such an issue - right now I "bulk" grocery shop every 2 weeks.

I'm not eating 100% great right now (I've also had to cut back on organic to save $$, I try to prioritize with dairy first - milk/milk products & eggs). I don't have the time to run to 2 grocery stores - the health food oriented one that is 40 minutes away and the local superstore 10 minutes away. Going to Whole Foods is a treat right now! Though, I must admit, the mainstream store is getting more and more stock of organics and "healthy" items.

I'm contemplating trying some of those Kashi shakes - I'm nervous that once clinicals start in the fall and "real nursing school" that I'll have even less time and be too tempted to eat the junk on the floor! I figure a drinkable meal, though not great, might be good in a pinch.

Off to class! Looking forward to learning and reading more. :)
