Health Insurance
No insurance-plan is offered, nor do I want one from work. - As happy&healthy me, (only 'catastrophic'-help's appropriate), so I got 2 policies (less than $70monthly) from AFLAC - I recommend this company highly. Good day! :)

nursing + exercise?
Good for you!, re: "Exercise should be what you *enjoy* :wink2: doing" Today, my Figure-skating coach commented in my lesson: "Annie, where is your usual broad smile? (as I was over-analyzing a skill that I want (with the *same* level of competence/confidence as my coach, lol). She always puts things back into perspective: "it's not like we're gonna be on the Olympic-team, any time soon" LOL

Healthier Living Support - Part III
hi tweety ~ had i known about this (what you wrote today): "i'm going to ask a mod to close this thread (part-2) and then delete it in a few days." - i would have spent my time choosing a different-thread to post my contributions in, re: *how to de-stress, and enjoy more closely the life of your finest dreams*. until i know a better thread to move my original post to, please excuse my (edited) re-posting here. some person/nurse may actually wanna give my helpful-ideas a go...! "hi wonka ~ we don't pay attention to: calories, this or that, and our family is healthy, active & slim. the way we achieve/maintain this is: first, we gratefully eat foods simply as god created them for us: organic-veggies (in chef-salads, or baked), and fruits (raw, or in smoothies), baked/grilled meats/fish, tea - and too, we also enjoy foods like avocadoes, sour cream, our homemade cheese-cake & fudge. yet, like i said, at 110 - i'm not challenged weight-wise, even at 55 yrs. chronologically. (well, truth be told, i'm 5.5 yrs. young l l ) - hey, whatever succeeds, eh? further, we do take a comprehensive mv-m, (and rarely abo's followed by acidophilus-bifidus replacement supplementations). but no other meds, of any kind. and of diseases, we remain free. imagine, you can expect it also, and your *mind* (beyond your brain) will create what you want, and pay attention to... yup, you can have your cake and eat it to too! you've probably figgered this out already, and it's true: (crime&accidents aside), what you choose to want & expect, your own mind will set-out to create as your *repeated/perpetual* reality... how often have you noticed this already also? [color=sienna]quote: originally posted by wonka welcome, cheerfulsong! i'd love to hear more about your skating! well tho i have not won any "*metal*-medals", (our skating friends think of my own story as remarkably inspirational) - *ice-skating* is wonderful !! exercise: i know of many skaters who (as adults) began out of concern for their spine, decreasing-flexibility, strength, balance & endurance - who not only re-gained their former abilities, but exceed them now - including more dependable bone-density, yeah! currently i am learning skills in all 4 basic-classes, that our private coach is helping me gain. (my coach was a *senior lady* in her day (you know, the kind you see on tv - at "nationals"). i surely appreciate & love her! might you be interested in knowing more, there's the 1. recreational-journey, with isi: http://www.skateisi.com/html/skprog/skprog_learn.cfm or the 2. competitive-track, with usfsa: http://www.usfigureskating.org/programs.asp?id=47 as you can see, both have a "basic-skills program" to get you going; as well, both offer competitions for those people interested in that fun. i'll be pleased to share with you, more! enjoy! annie "

What Is Your Ideal Job?
the concept of "work" should be abolished, lol no really, how about just *enjoy :melody: living, having fun with all involved, and get paid for it too* (the gravel-road there was not exactly a 'free-way', lol - took 30-some years of more/less down-left awful jobs); but the one i've got payin' the bills now, is ok: * 3-miles, 6-lights & 9-minute commute. * the people are 'easy', meaning fewer neurotic personalities * hours are accomadatable * i can see our goals, in sight... plan on stayin' a year past "we have lift-off..." annie :flowersfo

Healthier Living Support Thread: PART TWO!
Hi again Tweety ~ I thought "What is this person asking me about?" - only to realize I had made a minor "typo" in my post; sowwy! :imbar (That 'plus'-sign was supposed to have been a "%"-sign instead, reading like this: I'm a'wonderin - Are other nurses here at (all.nurses) who enjoy sharing *100% positive ideas* with each other, for encouraging each other in them - as simply I really enjoy being around more such folks... Makes good sense? Also, our Figure-skatin' is part of a dozen journeys, we engage passionately... We simply believe that in completely immersing/enjoying ourselves in FUN Win Win situations, we *honor & praise God* who created us just for such purposes... :welcome: Annie

Healthier Living Support Thread: PART TWO!
Hi Tweety ~ oh sowwy, I thought I was sharing with fellow-nurses, not the "General-public". ~ And yes, I learned in Nursing-school in the 70's that I "must sell my soul" to work in this profession; so I understand what you mean. I shared with the best of intentions!, for people's finest, most optimal Well-being... & hope you realize this :) Annie

Healthier Living Support Thread: PART TWO!
Hi Wonka ~ As I said above, we don't pay attention to: Calories, this or that, and our family is healthy, active & slim. Yet, like I said, at 110 - I'm not challenged weight-wise, even at 55 yrs. chronologically. (Well, truth be told, I'm 5.5 yrs. young, L:DL) - Hey, don't laugh, whatever succeeds, eh? Further, we do take a comprehensive MV-M, and on occasion acidophilus; but no medications at all. And we decided skipping "going for Dr. check-ups" - and using that money, on activities more enjoyably meaningful for us like *Skating*! ~ (otoh, my 3 other siblings depend on doctors regularly - and they've got all the researched-diseases/pains warned about: diabetes, depression, heart dis-ease, fractures, panic-attacks, strokes, you-name-it). But we remain free. Imagine, you can expect it also, and your *mind* will create what you want, and pay attention to... Yup, you can have your cake and eat it to too :wink2: You've probably figgered this out already, and it's True: (crime&accidents aside), What you choose to want & expect, your own mind will set-out to create as your *repeated/perpetual* reality...have you noticed this already also? :) Well tho I have not won any "*Metal*-medals", (our skating friends think of my own story as remarkably inspirational) - *Ice-skating* is wonderful exercise (I know of many adult-skaters who began out of concern for their spine, decreasing-flexibility, strength, balance & endurance - who not only re-gained their former abilities, but exceed them now - including more dependable bone-density, Yeah! Healthier Living Support Thread: PART TWO!
this is my 1st. post (here at all.nurses) in over a year, and i am still wondering *if*, or how, i'll ever fit in. for example, at 55: i am continuing my youthful-health, and can maintain my weight of 110 lbs. just fine, partly because as a passionate figure-skating student, we *share great :1luvu: dreams* of becoming *masterful :wink2: pair-skaters* - where every ounce/weight does affect your balance on the ice. so, i be good, l:dl also, i'm a'wonderin - are other nurses here at (all.nurses) who enjoy sharing *100+ positive ideas* with each other, for encouraging each other in them - as simply i really enjoy being around more such folks... thank you! :balloons:

Any Psychic Nurses?
I am glad you found it helpful, Sis :), and like I offered above, I have more like truthful stories, especially how (in our "patient" clients) we can *each* inspire helpful HOPE... In the early 80's, there was a little boy born with respiratory challenges who needed a trach, and soon thereafter was placed on full life-support. This is how he existed for shy of the first 3 yrs. of his life, NEVER once leaving the children's research center he was born in. Learning-disabled and failing-to-thrive, he had few clues of childhood wonders beyond those walls. Fortunately for him, he did get to join in living with his family - with a complete entourage of ICU-trained nurses, to care for him day-in/day-out. But all of his Drs. said that "his lungs resemble a 91-yr.old man, they're too shot. So he can not live past about 2 months, at most". One nurse (aware of how many times this precious child had already 'coded', yet lived thru all of those trials) chose to perceive this differently, and encouraged his parents to exersize their Faith. Well they asked, "what can we do, and how can we help him best?" - and this nurse offered "How about you just allow him to BE, a little boy starting where he is now developmentally, and allow him to explore his world - simply as all babies do...AND us working his cares around him, for once will bless him with the opportunity to *Choose becoming as he wants*. What do you think of that?" - They agreed. The 2 months came, and went. And this kid was not only not "dying", he started thriving: smearing pudding, and play-dough in his hair, sucking on carrot-sticks, clamoring for more and more *yummy foods*, smiling more, laughing often especially when he would splash his bathwater all over the carpet, loved being rocked by his "moma" into melodic :Melody: peaceful slumber. Winter left, and Spring came. This nurse got a flower-box, and a bird-feeder, and all sorts of other wonders were luring his attention to the world beyond the window by his bed. And the day came, that he - gingerly - stepped outside the backdoor to have a "Look-see". :flowersfo Oh my! - progressively, the vent-tubing was elongated, then - stretched to the max. Then for GOOD reasons of fun of his own making, he started weaning away from that contraption. The day came that he was having a blast, ripping off flower-petals, and developing evermore . On and on, he grew - right into a man. Amazing, huh? Six other children, with similar *success- :balloons: stories*. Yes, this kind of "service" just makes your day :thankya: ... So, how about everyone else adding theirs, as well ! :icon_hug: Cheerfulsong

Pro's/Cons of artificial feeding (for college essay)
Hi Jaime, THANK YOU for being open-minded, enough to "accept and appreciate ALL opinions as valid and respected". And obviously evidently, individuals in "coma-state" are tragically mis-understood. Might you agree - 1. the *coma-person, her/him-self* deserves the "RIGHT of Choice" :) re living, or dying; and 2. NOT the physicians, family, and other unbelieving public opinions. One critical issue that people, who are FOR "withdrawal-of-support" are not considering, nearly adequately enough, is: "Eliminating someone else is good, I'm SURE that's what I would want - if I was in a coma state". Ah, but 99.9% of these people haven't ever been IN that state, so - they're not speaking from 1st-hand experience, are they. Continue carefully researching this issue Jaime, because as *open-minded* as you are, you might yet come to understand how, specifically, to help such people....... before some other public figure succeeds in preventing another's QUALITY-of-life. Learn being an *ardent Advocate-for-QUALITY-of-life.*. Such is noble, Jaime.

Therapeutic Communication
Basically, 'therapeutic communication' is generally taught to give the recipient of your communication a sense of you being caring, mentally present/bonding and actively hearing/listening. Initially you can use it to de-escalate, or dissipate, negative/destructive emotions. But you know, that in and of itself, usually leaves the person still "stuck". Yet, what if you were to consider a neighbor-method of this approach, called "rapporting"... as it can engender a safer sense in another person, superficially. For example, say a person talks livid, enraged, & angry to the max - but yet wanting help with changing to a positive/constructive emotional state. Were you to approach said person with - (their same words back) *plus* "I can understand how that could be really maddening, or upsetting" - and carefully consider their response. Next, "And not only that, but if you chose to continue feeling like this - bad - long enough, it could make you sick. And you sure wouldn't want that, right ?" - and carefully consider their response. Next, "How might you want to feel instead?" - and carefully consider their response. and so on, and so forth. What you are doing here is progressively Pacing... the other person's emotional responses, until shortly they will allow you to help guide (or Lead) them into *choosing feeling much better*. This amounts to a mutually-satisfying and healthy process of communication. I, as well as many "therapists", successfully use similar means to help people shift emotional states, more to their liking. To further your success, in helping people in this way, there are actually Communication-classes you can participate in (outside of traditional nursing). Have fun with this! :)

Do you think new grads should start on a med/surg floor or jump into specialty areas?
Hi Stacy, "Med/Surg" for a year at least, will serve your developing skills well. I chose that too, and found it valuable - in the dozen different Specialties following, and gaining service experience in also.

Creative way to teach about elderly depression??
Hi Christi - You are *free to be Creative* ? - how fortunate you are!, really. And adding to your ideas, how about 1. you explore interviewing actual "elderly"-individuals, living for instance in AFH's. (in one I managed, we scheduled visitors daily, the more the merrier :)) They can clue you in, far better than any Textbook ever will, re: multiple contributing factors (stidget mentioned), and signs/symptoms. Now, is this short presentation asignment only supposed to cover how "stinkin' lousy" depression feels? OR 2. might you be interested in actually learning how to *create fun differences* in the lives of these people, afflicted with dis-eases? ...because I can tell you, from successful experiences participating in the latter, that it will change you for the better, as well as any "Elderly"-person who you choose blessing. so, Christi - let me know how you are intending walking this path... :)

Any good meds to stop anxiety?
Hi Cat again, re " Perhaps talking about her childhood abuse with a trained counselor may be helpful." What you shared of your mom's suffering, there are a couple of particularly successful methods available. Find a counselor skilled in "Time-line therapy". You can get a basic idea about this, reading the paperback "Time Line Therapy and the Basis of Personality" by Tad James, & Wyatt Woodsmall. Not only will such a counselor be able to dis-connect negative emotional charges from whatever abuse and guide healing, he/she will also help your dear mom adopt any positive emotional states she wants to feel moment-to-moment, as well as cross-contextualize them in future situations. And another beautiful thing about this methodology is how quickly she can enjoy these changes. Why waste extended periods in "talking/advicing", when happiness can be readily realized, & kept :) I wish both of you all the Best :Melody:
