Healthier Living Support Thread: PART TWO!

Nurses Stress 101

Published

Ok folks, time has come to Start anew.......over 1000 posts means LOTS of bandwidth use here at allnurses.com. So I have been asked to remedy the situation.....

Anyhow, I have enjoyed so much your sharing, help and support here on the Healthier Living Thread....let's keep it up!!!!!:)

QOD: What is your favorite "old" or "new" healthy food/recipe? Care to share?

I have "rediscovered" oatmeal. Yep old fashioned good ole Quaker Oats-----the slow cooked kind.....with raisins, a bit of cinnamon and some Splenda.....YUMMY. Eating this as my dh's cholesterol and lipid counts were very high---trying to clean up my own dietary practices to help him with his....anyhow.....

Anyone else? As you change/grow/develop new tastes, what are your "old" or "new" healthier-choice favorites??? Care to share????

Tweety - Indian food sounds great! Last night we were exhausted after a very busy weekend. I had a bowl of tomato soup and half (gave the other half to my little boy) a grilled-cheese sandwich. I'm sure the sandwich was not the healthiest thing for me, but it sure tasted good. :)

I am meeting with a lady today to probably take over the volunteer position of teaching childbirth classes in our community. I think that will be good for my mental health since it is right on track with what I want to be when I grow up :D Tonight is also my last town board meeting as Mayor (also volunteer - so no money lost -whew!) and then my term is officially up which will be great for my state of mind. As much as I have enjoyed serving our community, I do NOT like politics and will be happy to be out of it - LOL!

So no mory politics Sarah? Can't say that I blame you. Good luck with the childbirthing stuff.

I went to the gym today, 40 minutes of aerobics and weights.

You know what they say about not going to the grocery store hungry is true. While I stocked up on fruits and veggies, somehow two boxes of buy-one-get-one-free Cheezits wound up in my possession. Sigh...hopefully the spouse will eat some, he loves Cheezits. LOL

Thanks Tweety - yeah, I did learn that politics is not my thing. The classes should be great though!

LOL - I know what you mean. I get my fix on purchasing junk food for my man too - he eats all the bad stuff and I try (try being the important word there) to stick with the good stuff. I've been bad lately, but I made a pact with myself to get back on track today. So far so good - but it is early yet :chuckle

Glad that folks enjoyed the article!

My latest fitness venture is to find a new way to exercise at home...I'm exploring DVDs and the like. If anyone has any ideas, please share!

Good luck with the home fitness Wonka.

I finished the last of the Cheezits yesterday. My bad. But I did go to the gym and do weights and aerobics, so not all bad. :)

Today's a new day. Yesterday we had pizza for a customer service award and candy for Easter. Yuk..........

I know what you mean Tweety - I am being bombarded by Easter candy and birthday cakes (daughter's first birthday was the 15th)! I did eat some birthday cake, but then I went for a big, long walk, so hopefully that helped equal it out a little bit. :p

Today I have been drinking tons of water! I am trying to eat smaller meals throughout the day and it is actually making me feel pretty good - yeay!

Good job Sarah!

I was real bad this weekend with the donuts and cupcakes at work for Easter.

I'm back on track today! I had a lot of salmon in my fridge when I went veg and am not unvegging my diet to eat them, but it's healthy omega 3's!

Hi everyone! I'm encouraged to see this thread is still here from before I took a break from Allnurses stuff. As a full-time student who works full-time I've definitely gotten into the habit of eating poorly. As of today I am 7 days caffeine-free which is a huge thing for me. I was up to 4-5 diet sodas a day which is scary to me as I can't pronounce most of what is in them! This morning was the first time I didn't wake up with a dull headache in the middle of my brain since I quit. Yay!

Now it's time to start shaping up the diet. I've found a really awesome tool - a website called at Fitday.com. You can track every single thing that you put into your mouth there and it even tracks vitamins which I find especially awesome. It's a free and very simple program and it's really started to help me figure out what exactly is going into my mouth. There's also a place to journal and log your weight loss and goals. Very neat!

After the diet is shaped up I plan to start hitting the gym again. I've kept my membership because it's affordable at the student rate and I'm about to graduate. I'm rather ashamed to say that I haven't gone at all this semester but I still shell out the $27 per month for membership. Ohhhh well. Time to patch things up!

Do any of you have a recommendation for a good pilates video? The gym pilates class is painfully crowded and I need something to do in the privacy of my own home. Thanks!

Hey Shel.....I use fitday.com, too. Last year I started tracking everything I ate, etc....I really liked seeing how it broke down my diet.......I was shocked to see how many carbs I actually WAS eating in a day!

Sorry I don't have any suggestions for Pilates videos. I've never done Pilates. I do work out at home, though. We have a bowflex, and I work out with The Firm series....love those so much because they really do work for me. Hubby just bought a treadmill. I like it, but like to walk outside when the weather is nice. Last year I lost 20 pounds....got really into shape. Gained 10 of it back over the past year (job changes, stress, etc, got out of the habit of exercise)....so now I'm back trying to get on track again. Good luck to you with kicking the caffeine habit!

Good morning everybody! Thanks for the website Shel, I haven't heard of that, but I'm going to go check it out - maybe that would help me keep on track. :) I'm sorry, I don't know of any good pilates videos, but if you find one, would you let me know? I am interested too, but wouldn't know where to start to find a good one.

Tweety - I think adding fish in with your veggie goals is a great thing! I wish I could eat fish - I am allergic (both shell and non-shell) - drat!

SWRN84, I love the nice outside walks as well. There's nothing like breathing in all that warm, fresh air on a beautiful day while you briskly walk down a dirt road - at least out here, that's for sure!

Thanks for the response everyone. Still haven't found a good pilates DVD yet, but haven't done much looking besides asking on here. I'm finding that jasmine green tea with 1 tsp of honey really helps take the edge off my hunger at night. Resisting the urge to eat Easter chocolate candies is tough!
