He/She Said What!?

Nurses General Nursing

We (nurses) tend to think we ARE the best profession. :nurse:

However, other healthcare professions don't always think like we do.

Once, I had overhead a physician tell another nurse,

"I can train monkey's to do what you do."

Can I say Ouch! Not cool....

Leading to my question: What is the meanest insult you have heard a healthcare professional say to another professional or about another professional?

There was that one time, that HeatherPaige character said that LVNs were bottom dwellers. Lol!!!

Seriously??? what the world?

Why? Why do you want to hear negative statements or make members dig up old and probably not very nice memories?!

When I had heard the physician tell the nurse, "I can train monkey's to do what you do". I was mortified! I could not believe the total disrespect for another professional of the same "team". I was just curious if others had a similar negative experience. And possibly, shed light on how negativity from words can truly burn bridges.

Kind of sounds like she confessed she wouldn't know WHAT to do when the time would come!

I once had a BSN new grad who was shadowing me on the unit and who had not yet passed her NCLEX solemnly inform me that the difference between ADN and BSN RNs is that "ADNs know what to do, BSNs know why to do it."

I was an ADN RN at the time, but I somehow knew both what to do: to tell the manager that I didn't think she'd be a good fit on our LPN/ADN/BSN-mixed unit and why: because she was a pompous little so and so.

This is a pot-stirring thread, I believe.

I'll throw a bone in it for you.

I had a doc tell me one time, "Why the H do you keep calling about this patient? Figure out what's wrong with them."

Ummm, no. I don't practice medicine. I gave you the clinical picture, dude, do your job.

Calling to get comfort orders for patient who was actively dying. The doc told me to "Do whatever the hell you want! Call me again once the patient dies, other than that do not call me again!"

I was shocked. Jeez I just wanted some comfort orders. I have never had another doctor speak like that to me ever no matter what the reason for calling was.

The comment wasn't directed at me because I am a BSN, but one of my classmates made a very crass comment to an LVN student. I cant remember what was said verbatim, but it was something along the lines of "What purpose does an LVN even serve? An LVN is just a glorified CNA and isnt even a real nurse." I thought it was a really mean and negative thing to say.

When I worked for a urologist I was responsible for setting up his vas trays and other things for bedside procedures. I had one item off the tray he needed and I was not available to retrieve it. He came out of the room and said, "Are you sure you're an RN, you're not thinking like an RN."

At the end of the day after all the patient's were gone I went to his office and apologized for not having the tray right and told him it wouldn't happen again. Then I told him, while he stared at me dumb-founded, "I didn't go to medical school not because I couldn't, but because I wanted to be a nurse."

The most insulting thing for me is at my PRN job, the doctor does not trust me to do intradermal allergy testing. I'm like..."I LEARNED HOW TO GIVE INTRADERMAL INJECTIONS 6 YEARS AGO!!!!" I've worked for him for 1.5 years. He ONLY let's me give sub q allergy shots. Ridiculous, infuriating and down right insulting.

I would quit. And tell him that he is insulting your intelligence and is acting like an arrogant person.

When I was young, bright and shiny new in clinicals, a young RN said to me "Oh, you're going to be one of those Little Pretend Nurses, huh?"and then smirked. I was so taken aback and hurt! I vowed then that I'd become the best LPN as I could be :).

"Don't ask her, she's just a nurse". (Yeah, been one longer than that MD who was just here has been alive.)

I still think one of the worst ones is having an RN saying that an LPN "isn't a nurse".

"You work under my license. Remember that. I am not willing to risk my license for foolishness. So do as you are told. It would have been cheaper to just get your CNA. Ya'll are the same thing, anyways."

(This from a nurse who didn't understand I had my own patient assignment, and that I could not drop everything to bring 4 of his 6 patients to the shower.....Sigh.)
