Have you ever heard of this type of request from a patient? I understand that there are a lot of cultural differences here in the US (so no flames please), but this honestly grossed me out. I also think this could have some really bad side effects for the mother's health.:barf01:

This reminds me of an older hispanic woman who advised my to collect my menstrual fluid, as it makes a fabulous facial mask.

okie dokie, artichokie.

As for breast feeding in public - why are we denying a human babys right to nourishment when he/she needs it. Come on, we are in the 21st century. How can anyone compare breast feeding with urinating?

:yeahthat:

According to the book by Suzanne Arms, "Immaculate Deception II: Myth, Magic, and Birth", it has been used in other cultures for postpartum hemorrhage. I've also heard of it being used for PPD but can't find a source at the moment.

This request did not strike me as particularly odd. Some people ask for the placenta to use as buried fertilizer for a tree planted in the baby's honor. We plan on planting a tree for the baby, but not planting the placenta to go along with it due to the animal population around here (coyotes, wandering dogs, etc.).

As for the article, I'm glad that she won her court case. It's too bad she had to go to court for it.

My best friend has her first born son's placenta in her freezer at home. I love her so much. There are some questions I don't ask.

I do hear there's a lot of nutritional value, however. But he's 8 years old now. I'm guessing, albeit frozen, it's probably a bit off at this point. Hey, I have 5 year old wedding cake in the freezer. Who am I to judge?;)

i understand that this has been done in simpler, vegetarian cultures...acceptable form of animal protein, high in iron, and doesnt leave the "evidence" lying around for scavanging animals.....

I am glad she won her case, wish the hospital would have just given it to her. I can't believe I read this entire thread and didn't gag. I like my unheathy diet just fine.

A couple of you guys take yourself way too seriously. I commented that animals eat stool half joking juts to show that the "animals do it" arguement doesn't hold water. Gee whiz.

Well, golly gee, Medsurgnurse, I'll be sure to only take you half seriously the next time you post, then.

Sorry, it's the internet. One liners can come across as pretty snide, can't they? Without the facial expressions, give and take of conversation, and intonation, we kind of have to work with what you give us. And you didn't give us much in that one little sentence.

Sorry I took your comment as a serious one; unfortunately I've heard similarly rediculous ones before in regards to other activities some regard as fringe (hence the comment about the public breastfeeding). I apologize to you for thinking that from your comments you thought eating the placenta was disgusting and were comparing it with an unhealthy and truly disgusting activity. I should have known that a nurse who works on med/surg has probably taken care of his/her fair share of poop-eaters and would realize that there really is no comparison!

While I'm at it, I'll also apologize for appearing to take myself too seriously. I don't know, I always thought I was a more tounge-in-cheek sort of gal. I'll have to try to review my posts better, I certainly don't intend (or desire) to come across as a humorless stick-in-the-mud. It's probably always a good idea to review a post before clicking that submit button. Thanks for the heads up and reminder!

In my years as a L&D nurse I have sent a few placentas home with

patients. We had plastic containers with lids the we put the placentas in.

I never really asked what they were going to do with the placenta.

There was a thread here a few years back on ladies making placenta bags.I

did not understand why one would need a bag but whatever the patient wants!

There are also lots of recipes for placentas....google and you will be suprized

at the number of recipes.:rotfl:

Thanks for the laugh!

If it was a one liner, I don't get it. It wasn't set up like a traditional joke, nor did it have a follow up. How else were we supposed to take it?

And I too, do not take myself too seriously. I spend lots of time laughing, often at myself.;)

But when someone bashes a practice that has shown to be beneficial for women in helping to prevent post partum hemorrhage (a serious, life threatening occurance) and post partum depression (another serious illness-any mama or family who's suffered knows this) because of a gut reaction "ew" factor, yep, I'm going to suggest that opinions be based not on knee-jerk reactions, but on reasoning.

There was a similar thread on this subject a while back. I saw a show on HBO or the discovery channel about a woman who took her placenta home and had a party for the baby. She prepared a pate with it and served it on crackers.

So did she tell the guests what she was serving and did they choose to partake?

Having traveled to a few third world countries and entertained many internationals in my house, I long ago learned not to ask what I was eating. It is easier to keep it down when you don't know!:lol2:
