Have you ever heard of this type of request from a patient? I understand that there are a lot of cultural differences here in the US (so no flames please), but this honestly grossed me out. I also think this could have some really bad side effects for the mother's health.:barf01:

Placenta Pizza:

Grind placenta. Saute in 2 tbl. olive oil with 4 garlic cloves, then add 1/4 tsp. fennel, 1/4 tsp. pepper, 1/4 tsp. paprika, 1/4 tsp. salt, 1/2 tsp. oregano, 1/4 tsp. thyme, and 1/4 cup of wine. Allow to stand for 30 minutes, then use with your favorite home made pizza recipe. It's a fine placenta sausage topping. Now that is a party recipe!!! I suppose in ancient cultures and some in this era who obeserve/preserve (lol) sacred customs the placenta is considered a source of life. So we nurses not so culturally aware must be sensitive of such practices and bag it up..

Hmmmm good eye deea have the FDA put their stamp of approval first...I cannot believe this thread! We nurses need a looooog cruise in the Caribbean and a lesson in spelling (smiles sheepishly)

that would def be a fear factor moment for me. i was never asked if i wanted my placenta. the thought of ever keeping it never crossed my mind. i think about that and i just get this image of the doc asking me how i would like my placenta prepared. "with a side of spleen and some gall stones in my tea, please"

guess i just never had the desire to eat my organs, any internal organ for that matter.

as a long time rn who has "seen it all" and keeps seeing and hearing new things daily remember that it was once scoffed at when doctors and nurses first started washing their hands before touching patients. new things are learned on a daily basis and we are going to learn a lot more about the healing properties of the placenta and stem cells. don't scoff or be grossed out by the unknown...keep an open mind. what may not be right for you may be erfectly normal for your daughter or grand-daughter.

did you knwo that it was oliver wendell holmes who first suggested this practice??? he realized that doctors where cross contaminating there patients when they went from patient to patient with out ever washing there hands. they could not understand why all of there patients were getting infections. it was oliver who put two and two together and realized that this was transmitting infections.

just a little tid bit of info there.

Just don't have any interest in eating anything that is expelled from my body. This includes but is not limited to: feces, urine, mucus, mucous, blood, any form of undigested or digested food particles, organs, finger or toe nails, sweat, bodily secretions, or fungi. Yum but no thanks.
