Hateful, mean nurses

Nurses Relations

Published

I have been at my facility for a little over a year and a half. I've had a few scuffles with co-workers in the past but nothing major. Now there are two nurses that seem to have it out for me. (I have no idea what I did to upset them.) I've gone to management about the harrassment I've been receiving and they (management) won't do anything. The only thing they offer is for all of us to have a 'sit-down' and talk session. There are no consequences at my hospital. You can let a patient lay in a dirty bed all night and the worst thing you get is a 'talking-to' from the supervisor. Seriously? There needs to be more consequences for their actions. They let these bullies run wild. We can't keep staff. Almost every new person that they hire leaves within 6 months.

Any advice?

Look up "workplace bullying" and what the ANA recommends doing about it. See if your supervisors are doing all they can; there are real financial and health consequences to employer and bullied employee, not to mention patients whose nurses are otherwise distracted.

Don't engage in lateral violence yourself, and that includes engaging in any kind of workplace gossip.

Do engage the bullies frontally, and let them know that they may not treat you as they are.

This must be someone writing from my hospital. Seriously, I had to give report to someone who would not turn around and face me. I gave report to her back. I could not face her because she was facing the wall!

OMG-!hilarious!

When I was new the nurses would make me wait until last to give report. Then they'd go into the pt room and wait for me. When I'd go into the room, they'd go the desk and wait there. When I went there, they would just get up and leave.

One day I sat at the desk and waited for them. They waited in the room. And waited. And waited. Then they came to the desk and once I started giving report they got up and left. I continued to give report (to no one), left my written report on the desk, and left.

Didn't happen much after that..

was going to say... I wondered who got my old job! ;)

You will run into bullies everywhere. Document-document-document! Keep a personal journal. It may come in handy if management turns over---like it tends to do--and you need dates/times of when stuff happened.

How exactly are they harassing you (details) , you really didn't give us much to work off. but anyway I'll try my best to advise you. You stated that you all ready reported these people but nothing wasn't done about it unfortunately. Then I suggest you put thinks in you own hands by being more serious and direct to your aggressors letting them know your not tolerating anymore inappropriate statements and actions from them without a reasonably cause.

That being done try to stay out of their way as much as possible, when you do see them pretend as if you don't, if you do come in contact with them it should be strictly work wise and please don't let them get to you. provide the best pt care you can and try sticking up for your self will ya.

Best of luck

if your co worker treats you like that how these nurses treat their patients,in my work thats a violation of company policy which is discourtesy to staff and or the general public also considered unsatisfactory work and or attitude, inconsiderate treatment or maltreatment of others.Obviously bullies has poor self esteem.

Where is this place? Given the reluctance of many hospitals to hire new grads, this may represent a great opportunity for us non-practicing RNs to get that all-important first year of experience!

(just kidding - sorry to make light of your situation)

Good for you for not letting that continue to happen.

I just don't understand why people act like this.

If you are an RN, and so are they you should have different assignments- encourage them to mind their own business. If they have issues with your care they can make out an incident report, but buzz the heck off. Develop a good relationship with your team leader though, and don't be reluctant to ask questions of supportive staff.

If your supervisor is the bully I would move on. Transfer within the hospital if possible. A negative supervisor can ruin your reputation in a cold minute.

I feel your pain! When people act mean, it gives me strength. I feel bad for them b/c they are carrying around so much hate. I'm not pollyanna or anything, just makes me sad for them, which in my own mind makes me feel better.
