Hate to say this, but my new boss is lovely.
I have NEVER cried because of a boss. I guess I have the type of personality where I always stand up for myself. I don't take BS from people now, though didn't know how to cope with contentious and rude bosses when I was younger. But I will never cry due to a boss being obnoxious or petty - I just confront them in private, and then they USUALLY back down, unless they are a real nasty piece of work.
You need to stand up for urself and tell him/her their behaviour is unacceptable, though I know many people don't do this cos they're afraid to lose their jobs. Tell them you have rights and you ARE a human being and deserve respect! I would go see my NUM re this, or the next higher person to complain.
Let us know how you get on anyway & don't get too depressed.

My boss is my boss because of his education. Some days I hate him, other days I don't. What I do know is that i would not want that job! I also know that if I wanted to be "the boss" I would have to get the education and experience to be "the boss". We all have bad days and good days at work- just chalk this up to a bad day!!!

I feel ya lifein08, my last boss was soooo bad I actually quit a good job that I'd had for 10 years and really enjoyed...until she inherited the manager's position when our old boss retired. If I had only held out a few more months I would've been able to witness her crash and burn first hand! Education alone doesn't instill the "people skills" that are required for these positions. Keep your head up and know that if you're a good nurse, give good patient care and keep a positive attitude (as much as possible anyway!) you'll probably outlast this dude and get to see the next jerk of a boss! Good luck!

Thankfully I have a good boss, though I feel sorry for people stuck with a mean boss. Some of the bosses in the other departments were nasty and would try to get people to spy on each other and write them up.
My issues are with the hospital system itself and its refusal to provide adequate lift equipment and stop mandatory overtime. The truth is middle management is a very difficult place to be and I wouldn't want to work in management because they love to fire people for no reason at all.
Your job is actually safer as a staff RN then mananger or educator or whatever. In my city hospital systems are also downsizing and laying off VP's and managers to save money on top of the firings for no reason.

You are not alone... my boss is a complete IDIOT
I could deal with the stupidity if he were not a total liar to boot.

I had a really really bad boss. Now the one I currently have, while not perfect, does seem to try to care, tries to balance her staff's needs with her boss's wants. And as said before, I sure don't want that job.

I used to work on a unit where the boss was famous for coming out of the office, insisting this/that be done........then when things got really interesting because of it.......she'd return to her hole.
Twice she did stuff with my patients that lead to a Rapid Response. Both times she disappeared the second things got hairy.
I don't work there no more.

My manager is great, it is my supervisor I have problems with. She does not like me and makes no effort to hide that fact. Before I say anything else I should let you know I work in an outpatient clinic and am an insulin dependent diabetic. Recently I was getting ready for morning clinics and to see patients. I had run downstairs to get a coffee and a muffin, and they were on a table outside one of the clinic rooms so that I could grab a biite between patients. She came up to me and asked if that was my food and coffee. I said yes and was told "Move it. This isn't coffee time. Eat at your desk." I replied that I had my breakfast there because if I didn't get something to eat I would be hypoglycemic by lunchtime. I went on to say that if the clinic was really busy I wouldn't have time to get to my desk and eat, and the other nurses then might have a medical emergency on their hands should my blood glucose drop. I was told that the fact I am diabetic has nothing to do with the clinic, and it was up to me to figure out how to manage diabetes without it impacting the clinic. (This is the first I have heard about my diabetes impacting the clinic. Other than the other nurse who ran for juice for me one day when I was low and that was eight years ago.) This from the same woman who I have heard tell the diabetic pts to always have something on hand. So I put my breakfast into my office, and when I knew my sugar was going down one of my colleagues covered for me for a couple of minutes while I got the muffin into me. And the real kicker in this? The doctors, who also had food and coffee in the hallway were not told to move theirs. Just me. But I stay in this job because I love the interactions with my patients, and if I leave she wins. I won't let her drive me away from something I love.

I really like my boss. It's my coworker that is giving me grief. That snotty attitude he has, and he is always trying to make me feel dumb and take my work. I want to strangle him sometimes. This week without him has been absolute bliss.
My other nursing manager on the other hand had issues. She was so obsessed with team work and she was the worst team player ever. I mean EVERYTHING was about team work. (The patient fell, oh team work would have prevented that.) Every meeting team work this, team work that. She annoyed me. But other than that and her ability to blame you for everything she was ok. I guess.

"Hating" your boss is going to hurt you more than him. It's going to require a lot of negative energy, energy that you need for becoming the best nurse you can be. You need to be able to accept constructive criticism, and convincing yourself that he is a total idiot will just make you resistant to the possibility that you do have weaknesses just as you have strengths. Just do your job, work to improve your knowledge and skills, and lay low.

Not to mention annoucing it on a public internet forum. If IF *IF* I did hate mine I would hide in a locked closet and say it in some obscure language with no lights on....
