GUM! Can you chew it on shift?

Published

Heard a hospital banned gum... didn't say why. I think I'd have to quit a job that banned gum.

Well? Can you chew gum? Why not? Do you do it anyways? Does anyone care?

Besides good breath, gum helps me suppress my hunger and increases my concentration lol

I'm actually chewing gum as of now!

(I work in as a server and I am not allowed to chew gum but I have never gotten caught)

Edit: I didn't see the post was old. Sorry guys!

*phew* ;)

sometimes i do wonder what sort of mission people were on when they bring up a years old post- i think the record i've seen was an 8 year old post. a month old really isn't that bad, but my first thought when i got the subscription email when you posted was "i'm still subsrcibed to this thread?"

they're learning to use the "search" function. it's all good.

My friend works at a hospital in which gum chewing is prohibited while working, they also have their nurses walking around saying, "Is there anything I can do for you, I have the time."

that sounds more like an obedient butler than a nurse. hospitals are for sick people in need of medical care, not to provide personal servants who can't wait to fluff a pillow...therefore I (sorta) think this borders on enticing patients with "extras" that are not intended to be covered by medicare/ insurance.

I feel the same way about chewing gum as I do tattoos and piercings. There will always be a group who classifies these as "unprofessional." The truth is that who you are as a person and nurse speaks VOLUMES over any body adornments or gum chewing behavior. I have a nose ring, a tattoo on the back of my neck and, yes, I chew gum regularly. And in spite of this so-called disgusting unprofessionalism, I am routinely praised by my patients and their families for my excellence as a nurse. I've even won awards on my unit because of this. I'm articulate, compassionate, and I know my stuff! THAT is what others take notice of. Being so openly judgmental about things of minor importance is far more unprofessional. Pick your battles in life, seriously.

Seriously? A 2.5 year old thread about chewing gum?

I hope you are never my nurse.

Remember, there is a person underneath that patient. If you only wanted to treat the disease then then you should have gone into medicine. Nurses treat people, not diseases.

There is a reason why the lamp holds a special significance.

I cannot "like" this comment enough.

I agree with bans on chewing gum because I worked in an office where literally *everyone* cracked their gum, and it drove me insane. I seriously considered emigrating to Singapore, where gum chewing is punishable by caning.

Makes me miss some of the great, award-winning, threads of sarcasm we used to love... *sigh* as well as the posters who used to frequent them. #goodtimes

Hey I got an idea: Throwback Thursday threads!!!!!!
