gpa for JUST prereqs?

Published

Hey everyone! Im new here..and just decided to pursue a career in nursing after a long break from school. I was previously going for something i was not passionate about and unfortunately have a 2.4 gpa. However..after looking into the nursing program (the ADN at my school) NONE of the prereq classes i need have been taken yet...which equal to about 7 classes...and it looks like they ONLY judge your entrance initially by the gpa you get in these 7 classes...NOT your overall course history gpa. Does this sound familiar? If so..im really excited because I know i can do it and Im very determined..its almost like a brand new start for me!

sure does that how my school is. it only judges the prereqs. just started ns

yeah, my school only counts GPA of the required pre-req's.

That's not unusual. Usually your overall GPA has to exceed a certain marker, but competitively it would be the pre req GPA that counts.

At the community college where I'm applying, one's overall GPA is not considered. Only the grades from the pre-requisite and general education courses will be looked at.

My community college is the same way. After returning to college (have a BS) it was great to just concentrate on the 7-10 prereq's and then apply. Watch out though. It is highly competitive to get accepted!

My BSN program is the same way. They couldn't care less about your cumulative, they only look at your pre-req gpa.

The first University I applied to considers your GPA from the beginning of your academic career. I have a 4.0 in my last 63 credits, but had a bad semester 20+ years ago and it put me out of the running. The University I am applying to this fall is strictly GPA.

Does anyone know what gpa Tarrant CC will consider in Spr. 2011? I heard from another student that it will only be pre-reqs then, but have no confirmation. Hope they're right!

I was on probation my first semester (1.8 GPA) and subsequently got my cum GPA to over 3.0 when I graduated with my BA. Years later, I have completed all my prereqs for nursing school and depending on the school my prereq GPA is between 3.8 and 4.0. One nursing school has already accepted me based on transcripts alone, but am applying to other schools to see if I can get into one with cheaper tuition.

Moral: IT CAN BE DONE! Good luck to you!

As I recall, TCC Nursing has said, ALL they look at is grades, GPA. As to whether prereqs only, or everything, I don't know.

Focused overpreparation minimizes surprises.

If you have not done so, strongly recommend you download TCC's Nursing School Application packet, and study it frontwards, backwards, & side to side in both directions.

(You will recall that the application packet can be downloaded ONLY during the 2-month application process window. I expect the window is open, at the moment.)

Bonne chance!

Thanks for the reply chorkle. I do have the application. However, neither it nor any info I have from the website incl. the faq's addresses how/which gpa's are assessed currently, much less any changes to come. Time to put in a call and play phone tag!
