first of all, congratulations!!!
the only advise that i can give is to keep an open mind during your clinical experiences. often the reality of the "real world" can seem like a stark contrast to what you learn in class. instead of judging the nurses and vowing that you'll "never do that" be open minded. ask questions. seek rationales for why people do things differently in the real world vs. nursing school world. i love teaching nursing students who are willing to learn but i do not appreciate judgmental and holier-than-thou attitudes.
welcome to the wonderful world of nursing!
Thank you very much! I am very eager to learn and pretty open-minded. Im just very excited to start a new chapter in my education (and yes im a UBER NERD :0) I really enjoy this forum and love reading the stories of experienced nurses I just hope im cut out for the job!!

Hello!
Great job on the entry into the program!
I just recently started the nursing program myself and I am in the middle of block 2. I fully agree with the last comment it is so important to be flexible and teachable while in the clinical setting, a humble attitude goes a long way. As a fellow student I would add one more thing that I wish someone would have told me from the beginning. Go out and get at least one good NCLEX book and use it to study with by going over the questions. This will help so much. The more NCLEX questions you do the more you will get use to the format because it is a different way of thinking. Most teachers use NCLEX questions on their tests and although I am also a good student I had a hard time with this at first and didnt do as well as I expected on the tests. However, once I added the NCLEX book to my study time it helped me immensely and I ended up with one A and one B in the first block. I hope this helps! Congrats again!

My advice is study study and then study some more. I would go to the library into a confrence room that had no computer tv phone or anything would not bring a cell phone and lock myself in there get my studies done then go play. Really try to stay on top of and ahead of your work and make time for fun but remember studies before fun! With lots of discipline you can balance it very well.

CONGRATULATIONS!
Recommendations:
1) Do ALL the assigned readings AHEAD OF TIME---Write short, I DO mean brief, summaries of the chapters. Trust me, the summaries pay-off later during test/exam time.
2) REVIEW your lecture notes the same day/evening for 10-20 minutes to keep the material fresh in your mind.
3) For the SCIENCE COURSES, invest in a review book.
4) For the NURSING COURSES, invest in a NCLEX or SPECIALTY (med-surg, ob/gyn, peds, psych, etc) review book that has the answers AND RATIONALES. The nursing rationales explain important facts to be remembered for the exams.
5) Stay positive and maintain an upbeat sense of humor.
6) Network with successful classmates who maintian high GPA's.
7) Study AHEAD OF TIME for exams. (MINIMUM: 2-weeks) Many bright students start 1-month in advice reviewing 20 or more questions/per day. Nursing programs are difficult so you need to stay ON TOP OF YOUR GAME.
MUCH SUCCESS TO YOU!!!

I'm in the process of applying for Sept. 2008 (the schools I'm interested in are still accepting applications).
I hope (and pray) that I will have the same great news as you this year!
