Just had a girl with 102 temp crying because she wanted to stay in school. She has midterm review today and a basketball game tomorrow.
She was in earlier, afebrile, now with shaking chills. I'm suspecting flu.
A nice, sweet involved kid who never comes in. Parents are a pleasure.
Put your GOOD stories and Good kids right here.
One of the 8th graders here has one of those holiday light displays that coordinates to music (you pull up by the house and put it on a specific radio station). He also lives down the street from me. My daughter and I drive by and stop most nights, since we're both suckers for anything Christmas-related. Anyway, he was featured in the local paper this week. Last year, he raised $8000.00 for cancer research (he started fundraising with this display in response to his mother's second breast cancer diagnosis). His goal for this year is 12,000. He does it all by himself, and he is just the sweetest kid. When I was putting a few bucks into the collection tube last night, he came out to greet us. He said "Hey, you're the nurse at school!" His mom has been cancer-free for 4 months. :)

Student: Please don't judge.
Me: I don't judge, this is safe place.
Student unzipped the the sweatshirt and shows me two and of the biggest hickeys I've seen.
Student: I think I might have a blot clot. I mean, I know they are hickeys, but shouldn't they be smaller and hurt less?
Me: How long were you making out for?
Student: Over an hour and a half.
Me: Has your mom seen them?
Student: Yes. She knew as soon as I got home because she told me I smelled like man. My sister also smokes a lot of weed. So my mom told us both "why did I have one child that smells like weed and another that smells like man?"
I could not stop myself from laughing. I know the student's mom and can totally picture this which just made it funnier for me. Than we laughed together, and I told her that at least it is scarf weather here in New England right now.
Oh dear.
Laugh or cry?

On his card, he drew his hand with a hole in it with me placing a band aid on it. So sweet that these little guys remember all of this! I cried a lot that day.
I had a fifth grader whose mom had just had. enough. of her dawdling and missing the bus in the morning. One morning, Mom made her get on the bus even though she wasn't ready. She came straight to my office from the bus, hair a mess and still wearing pajamas, saying she had a terrible stomach ache. Well of course it was because she was embarrassed. I found her some clothes from my stash, and worked on her hair the best that I could with no hairbrush, (and talked about getting ready on time) and she headed to class.
At Christmas time, I got a hand-drawn card with a picture of a girl with messy hair and a giant comb, and it said "Thank you for what you did for me" and it took me a while to remember the incident and realize that is what she had drawn. I assumed it was a kid who had head lice! LOL!
I had a little one come in with a "Stomach ache", she's one of my frequents and it happens to be right around the time her mom gets off of work. I had her drink water and we were talking about her little brother (3 months old) and how she loves to be a big sister.
Then suddenly she says
"But I get to do it all over again because my mom is having an ooppsie daisy!"
This is why I love the littles.

Yes! This happened to me the other day. I had to send a kid for a physician eval. Both the father and the student shook my hand and thanked me for doing a "good job." It's so rare, it catches you off guard. It's good to see that some families still raise their kids with courteous manners.
We do different leadership groups for the older ones and they pick new groups for each half of the year. Usually I'm combined with the PE group but this time they wanted to try to break me into my own group. I was convinced no one would sign up to be with me but I learned today that I was the second most requested group! I had a few of my regulars come and talk to me about it. I might end up with a room of my frequent fliers, but i'm excited to work with the kids!
