Sent home from clinicals :(

Hello, I've only posted a couple times so I'm not sure if this is the proper place for this post. I'm sad, embarrassed, and frustrated because I was sent home from clincals this morning. I'm a second year student in an ADN program and today was my first day to care for 3 patients (all meds, care, etc). I prepped at the hospital for 2 hours last night, came home prepped until midnight and up at 5 a.m. to get to clinicals on time. In preconference I was not certain why my pt was receiving an antibiotic. She was admitted with SOB, but I saw nothing in the chart other than that. When I truthfully told my instructor that I wasn't sure about the antibiotic she replied that pt has pneumonia. Keep in mind that 8 other students are staring at me and I buckle under pressure. I replied that I honestly did not see that in her chart. Mind you, that when I was prepping the chart was taken from me several times by other staff members and someone even took the progress notes out of the chart. Also trying to prep on 2 others at the same time. After the 30 minutes of preconference I went to the floor to begin pt care. My instructor pulled me aside and said that she was sending me home and I needed to make an appointment with my advisor and the director of the nursing program. I sense that they are kicking me out. The environment is one of total fear, no encouragement, waiting for you to mess us and never pointing out the good. The fact that I'm a single mom of four and I worked my tail off for this doesn't count for a thing. My grades are always 3.5 and above, but I have to work very hard to do that. I'm in my 40s so the menopausal memory thing is doing a number on me. I'm in debt $15,000 in student loans and I really don't know if I'll make it:cry:. Missing this clinical will mean that I get an incomplete for the quarter which messes up my financial aid so now I have that to deal with. Honestly, I don't think I can take much more of this. I realize that I'm rambling, using no paragraphs, just hoping that there is "someone" out there to encourage me. I don't know what I'm going to do if I get kicked out. Thanks for "listening"...

Total fear - that sounds like nursing school (with some instructors anyway)

You've got to decide this isn't going to happen again - learn to anticipate what they will ask you ... all medications must make sense to you (esp when you are working as a nurse)

look up lab work - WBC's - can you look up chest xrays? can you read MD notes? All our documentation is on computers so we can access them plus look at paper chart too.

when they meet with you go in with the attitude that you will do better and you are already making adjustments to your clinical prep.

good luck

I'm listening. I am very sorry that you were sent home. I honestly don't think it was necessary to send you home. I had nursing instructors (back in the dark ages) that were like that too. I never have understood the part that you were suppossed to know EVERYTHING in nursing school...and learn nothing. As a nurse on the floor, when I see students prepping the night before...I am always willing to answer questions. Maybe next time if there is some med they are getting and you don't know why...ask the nurse on shift.

I wish that I had wonderful words of wisdom, just hang in there. I believe that all things happen for a reason. If they dismiss you from the nursing program it will totally stink...but there will be something better (perhaps a better nursing program with better instructors).

I would hope that they wouldn't kick you out because of that. If that's the case I don't know if I would want to be a part of that environment. It sounds like they are not trying to help facilitate the growth and development of their students.

I would contact your instructor or advisor and find out why after 1 mistake you got kicked out of clinicals. That to me is sad. They are educators and I know that in the real world they won't be their but in reality you also would have had the chart and the dx from the doc. If I were you I would fight it.

I'm a pre-nursing student and just wanted to let you know that I would be sending good thoughts and prayers your way.

You have vg grades and it doesn't appear this has been an ongoing problem so I would hope they aren't throwing you out. This instructor's response seems a little over the top. I agree to go in prepared and also be strong. I would fight for it too.

Don't despair.:icon_hug: Unless there is more to the story than is presented here, I don't think that they have the grounds to kick you out of the program. I would suggest that you pull yourself together and prepare to go meet with the director of the program to discuss what happened and how it can be rectified. Be willing and flexible to meet all of the new demands that they will probably place on you. Tell them that you are willing to do what it takes to complete the program.

Hoping for the best!

I think that this instructor's decision was unreasonable as well. If you didn't see it last night, and the chart was not totally available for you the following morning, I think she should have given you a solution rather than make your life more complicated. Am I surprized to hear this? Nope... one of the main reasons I hated nursing school so much was because of issues just like this. Some of the instructors and professors were simply horrible.

I can't imagine them kicking you out. It sure seems very extreme. I think that you have a tough teacher and you will need to go into clinical with your labs, all diagnosis, and all the reasons no matter how small that they are in hospital. I guess she expects you to speak to the patient's nurse too. Hope it all works out for you and don't beat yourself up, we all are learning and continue to learn. Good luck.

That is rough!

I don't have any advice other than fight it out and hang in there! Let us know how it goes...:redpinkhe

dang, i remember one time in clinical, i did not even acknowledge the wbc of 60k of a pt i was assigned to.

i was well studied in all his other pathology, but not even recognizing a 60k wbc, is pretty inconceivable.

my instructor told me to go home.

and i wouldn't.

i told her that i was totally wrong, but i'd be damned if i was going home:

that i paid thousands of dollars for this education, and went on and on...

thankfully, she just rolled her eyes and pushed me away, waving me off.

does it say anything in your policy book, about clinicals?

and do you have to write weekly anecdotals?

if so, you can address the overlooked med, in this.

wishing you the best.

it happens to all of us...

my advice to you is to keep fighting! never give up! but you are in my thoughts and prayers and i hope everything works out for you!! :)

i don't believe that asking a question put a patient in danger

if they ask you to resign or face expulsion, refuse to resign

if you are forced out you will have the opportunity to explain your side of the story

request to continue your clinicals while you are waiting for a hearing

good luck
