Press Ganey and Medicare?

OK. So I was talking to a friend of mine the other day. She works at one of the local hospitals and during one of their staff meetings, they were informed by the manager that somewhere down the line (2015-2020?), Medicare would base their reimbursement on the Press Ganey scores of their patients. I have never heard about something like this before and I just wanted to know if anybody has heard about this and if it is true? and if it is indeed true, what are your thoughts? Do you think it is a great idea or just plain crazy/stupid?

Yup I too heard about it. I can just see it now, "so and so in room 2 has Medicare so you had better give them a bed bath and massage!"

Jk

I've heard of this concept, but it wasn't directed towards Press Ganey Survey Results. They called it "Performance Based Medicine."

Crazy talk! There are some patients that will never be happy no matter what you do. Just cant please em. Then there are the rest. Lets just hope the Medicare patient doesnt fall into that "nothing is ever good enough, complainer" catergory. I am a proponent of taking care of everyone to the best fo your ability. I was not gifted the butt kissing gene.

I have been hearing about the Press Ganey Scores??? What exactly are they?? Thanks!!!

It's stupid. OK, let me be PC and say "short-sighted, full of flaws."

How many of your patients have the same caregivers through their entire stay? Hospitalists, surgeons, consults, etc. -- they're going to be seeing multiple doctors, having multiple nurses, aides, ancillary depts, etc.

Press-Gainey is asking for an overall impression -- so does the patient base their answers based on the general care they received, the average of their interactions with these caregivers? Or will the a$$hat of a surgeon or the resident with no bedside manner stick out and be the basis of their answers? Maybe the majority of their nurses treated them well, but they had a few shifts where the nurse was too busy or too uncaring to meet their needs. Maybe the aide took to long to toilet grandma ONE TIME when the family was there, and the family is going to let PG know it!

I'm not saying every poorly scoring facility doesn't deserve it, but there has to be a better way. IMO, it's just an excuse for the government to weasel out of paying.

Press Gainey is a private company that hospitals do NOT have to subscribe to. Medicare CANNOT base the reimbursement on a private compnanies scores, the same as the old falsehood that they will only pay JACHO certified hospitals and that if you lose JACHO you cannot bill medicare. That also is an old wives tail, hospitals do not have to join JACHO to be able to bill medicare, all they need is a medicare biulling number...

True ... however ... Medicare surveys patients too (the HCAHPS survey), and publishes the results on a consumer-friendly website which is mentioned on just about every Medicare mailing/marketing tool/EOB/other piece of paper:

IF ... HHS wanted to tie these scores to payment ... the structure is already in place to do so.

Yeah, speaking of weasel words, I think this is just another excuse that medicare will weasel their way out of paying, say"oops, bad score, we won't pay". Yeah, real nice medicare. We all know that some people are not satisfied no matter what we do, and medicare will take advantage of that so they don't have to pay. That's how I see it.

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard! Everyone knows people only talk about bad stuff! Which would you be more likely to do...rave to all your friends about the good service you got at XYZ place of business, or call all your friends and bi$&@ about how awful a place was and that you won't be returning and they should never go there either!? It's human nature!
