Nurses smoking weed?

Nurses General Nursing

Hey nurses,

In honor of "420" tomorrow... As a health-care professional, what are your thoughts on smoking weed? Any nurses out there that smoke a joint here and there?

Cheers.

Specializes in Emergency Room, CEN, TCRN.
I would never risk my job or license for something so trivial.

Wait, you mean seeing your name printed by the board of nursing telling everyone your license is revoked or suspended because you smoked weed doesn't sound like a good time to you??

HOMEWORK ???

Do you think this is someone's homework? Hmmmm.

I tried pot in my younger days and I didn't like it. I prefer a nice glass of wine. It tastes better and doesn't make you smell like a wet skunk.

I wouldn't do it - to protect my hard-earned license to be a nurse AND because it stinks and I don't like the feeling.

It ain't worth it. :sarcastic:

(edited to add - I hate with a purple passion the smell of cigarettes. My entire family smoked and I didn't like going to school reeking of cig smoke. Nowadays, it is the smell of pot that lingers on kids from homes where parents smoke weed. Blech.)

I don't indulge in anything of the sort. But in theory, if I was going to, and I were in a legal state, I'd make sure I had a couple days off afterward to a- make sure it's completely out of my system and won't affect my work in the least. b- you can test positive for a few days after you use it. Even though it may be legal to use, you can't be under the influence working.

Hair drug tests can detect drug use from 90 days prior if it was done more than one time!

Specializes in LTC, Rehab.

I haven't in a very long time. Just a light drinker.

Does make me think of drug testing too, though. I recently bought some protein powder to use making smoothies, and it's made from hemp seeds. Did a little research as to whether it could cause a negative drug test result, and *supposedly* won't.

I live on the west coast of Canada where, while it's not technically legal, I could smoke a joint in front of police officers and as long as I'm not causing a ruckus, nobody would bat an eye. I've never heard of anyone here being drug tested for work and I bet it would take something truly horrifying for that to happen (like some kind of workplace accident involving death or dismemberment). Plus 4/20 is a HUGE deal in my city. A cloud of smoke hangs over downtown for hours.

All that said, it seems that my body chemistry is just the kind that doesn't work well with drugs. Weed either makes me paranoid and twitchy or does nothing at all. I dropped acid once as a teenager and was like, "meh." Opioids make me throw up (though I've never tried illegal ones, to be fair, only small doses of hydromorphone following surgery). I don't drink anymore really because one drink will just put me to sleep, and two will make me more fun but also give me a crappy hangover. I even have a paradoxical reaction to Benadryl, for christ's sake. I'm not knocking my general lower risk for addiction but I do kind of wish even ONE substance could be fun.

Specializes in Trauma, ED, ICU.

Due to random drug tests and my children wanting to eat every single day, I can not smoke the reefer. But, I am counting down the years until I can retire.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

I enjoy my steady paycheck too much to risk it by praying at the altar of the Gong. Therefore, I do not smoke weed.

Specializes in allergy and asthma, urgent care.

Nope-I'd rather have a nice glass of wine to relax. And wine doesn't make me want to eat everything that's not tied down.

Except other nurses.

:roflmao:

Are we being punked?

First of all, if I did, I surely wouldn't be posting about it here.

Secondly, I don't drink or smoke. After caring for patients that do both, I don't think I ever can.

I love my liver and lungs too much.

Nope. Do you, OP?

No. But as dream'n said, I personally think it's safer than alcohol. My body doesn't work well with alcohol either. The way I relax is playing with my rabbit after a long day at work.
