(I am a nurse)

Not long ago I got a promotion at work, and I got flack for it from coworkers. Whatever over.

Recently a coworker tells me they were all talking about how much im making now. Ive never discussed ANYTHING about my financials with anyone from work.

If my situation turns ugly because of this (ie people pissed off over money) is there anything I can do about this ? Especially since I never discussed anything with anyone at all?

Is this a legal issue since im not a public/union worker, and I dont see how/why people would have access to my financials ?

Am I protected in someway against any kind of retribution against me ?

Im not interested in making a big stink about anything. But if people start demanding I get demoted and/or a paycut because of whatever im gonna be extraordinarily upset.

I dont know how/what to do about the situation

How do you know that are aware of your salary? Did they say "she got a raise and now makes $80,900" or big bucks come with the promotion (non-specific comments). Your post sounds like a bit of an overreaction based on what you wrote.

What legal protection ?

What kind of retribution are you expecting?

Again were they general comments (it's presumed promotions come with a salary increase) or specific (she made $8/hr before and now that she's promoted she makes $85.32 plus differentials!)

If anybody asks you directly what your raise was, you smile and say, "Not half what we're all worth here. Wanna go for coffee after work? How's that new puppy of yours working out?"

They don't really know. They might know ranges and roughly where you might fall into one, but they don't really know. I wouldn't lose one moment of sleep over this.

Did they come out with the exact amount that you're making or are they assuming you are making xx because of the promotion?

Well a coworker I trust told me they heard them all gossiping about it, and were talking about the exact number (but they refused to tell me the exact number, because they dont wanna get dragged into the middle of this)

Which is why im concerned now. If it was vague thats one thing, but specifics ? Seems a little funky to me. And I know absolutely nobody knows (at least from me)

I have no idea. Im just concerned about losing my position and/or a chunk of my raise if people start making a stink.

There were some who made a stink when I got the position to begin with, and I think money always makes people crazy which I why I get concerned even more.

I just wanna do my job

They are guessing and they bring the subject up with you because they want you to verify their guesses. All of this is nothing but workplace gossip and should be treated as such. You, and they, have more important matters to be concerned about.

Typically a posting will list the salary that it pays, so it's not particularly hard to figure out how much someone gets paid.

This is a non issue, don't address it and let their jealous selves deal with it.

Was your position not posted?

You've GOT the job. The complainers cannot change that.

Ignore the flack... it' s the professional thing to do.

Now... go do your job.

Don't discuss your pay rate with anyone. If you got a promotion then a pay raise comes with it. Now a days you can go online and look up hospital positions pay rates, which may be true or outdated. I say just do your job and if someone confront's you tell them your pay rate is not up for discussion point blank.
