I have $60,000 in loans and i have 18months left of nursing school. It is worrying me, immensly. Does any one out there have just as much if not more then me in loans? Are there any loan repayment programs for nurses out there?

I also have a hefty school loan but as long as you're in school PT you won't have to start making payments. I have been paying on mine for about a year, I was able to consolidate my private loans through one bank and consolidate my stafford loans thru another and with the money I make I don't really notice it.

Once you're out of school you can consolidate your loans. The cool thing about this is that there are a lot of repayment options. My boyfriend has a tiered repayment plan, where the first 5 years he pays a little, then after 5 years pays a little more, until it's paid off. The idea is that you'll be making more money in the future than when you first graduate.

You don't really notice it? I'm going to school for an Associates in Nursing .. I don't think they make that much, im consider getting my BA in nursing as well... what kind of nurse are you?

Nurses generally make the same whether its an ASN or BSN. If there's any difference in pay, most will tell you it's very little. I was an ASN, now a BSN, and working on the MSN. I think 60 grand is pretty steep for an ASN. I paid 6700 just 7 yrs ago, and the same program costs almost exactly the same now as then.

I, like a lot of nurses, didn't necessarily need loans to pay for nursing school. My ADN was reasonably priced at my local school

However, the income I lost by not working during the 2 years of the nursing program had to be replaced, and I did it through loans. It made sure the bills were paid and we didn't lose my entire previous salary while I was in school.

that is exactly what my loan was for.... paying for rent :x

Please be very cautious about racking up bills for living expenses etc. while in nursing school! Many new grads are having trouble finding jobs and a new grad wage isn't all that much. I don't know of anyone except maybe VA doing loan repayment now. Even though some schools frown on working most of my class managed to work and successfully complete nursing school. "Good debt" is a slippery slope.

the VA actually has been cancelling their repayment programs d/t lack of government funds.

There's one hospital out here that will pay 200/month towards student loans for as long as you work for them. Which is great, but they're IMPOSSIBLE to get a job at.

My close friend has nearly $60,000 in student loan debt that was accrued while earning two degrees: a BS degree from a private university in a major unrelated to nursing, and an ASN degree in nursing. Her monthly payment is in the $400 range per month.

Your loans can be deferred while attending school and consolidated after graduation.

Are there any hospitals out there still doing partial loan forgiveness if you sign contracts with them? I know I saw it a couple of years ago. I'm about to enter nursing school and about to rack up more debt as this is my second degree...
