Licensed after 55?

:confused:I have a question. I am currently an STNA on a hospital floor, and am working on my nursing pre-requisites. Today, a nurse approaches me, and eyeing my full bookbag, says that I wouldn't be able to get a nursing license because I am over 55. Well, slightly over, but still. She said this with a completely straight face, and insisted that she was not joking. I wonder if this is true. I doubt it, but who knows. I know a few nurses who graduated after 55, and that was years ago. But she insisted that this was true, and added that because of nurses' shortage, I might get licensed even though I am 57 now, so when I graduate, I'll be closer to 60. So... what do you think? Have you ever heard of this?

I never heard of such a thing, I can not belive it is true, but dont take my word for it, call your state board for clarification. I would be willing to bet they would say of course you can be lic after 55 or 65 for that matter. I dont think there is an age limit...

Anna, Clearly this "Lady" is suffering from a common malady given to those whose mouth is larger than their brain..I like to call it FOS for short. Of course you can get a license..I'd also give her a short inservice on age discrimination.

that is crazy.... my mother is 71 and just renewed her license... she has been a nurse for 50 years and now retired but renews it because she has had it so long....

that nurse has no idea what she is talking about... of course you'll be able to get your license.... ignore her comments

Somebody is pulling your leg. I had a friend whose mother was licensed at 55. I know of another person in that category (54 or 55) and have read about or heard about people in their early 60s. Keep on working at it and hope you enjoy nursing.

i am a 54 year old that just got a license that i busted my butt for on 8/8/08. i am an lpn and proud of it. print & take this to the ignoramus who said that to you!!

Whoever this person is, thank GOD she is not my nurse! She seems to be from another planet and needs medical assistance herself.

Never mind her. Is she just jealous or what? Not only can you get your license but you will likely someday be her boss!

I know many nurses who work well into their 70's, some work longer than that.

Just do what is right for you and never mind those who try to scare you or discourage you. To reassure yourself, a simple call to your state's nursing licensing Board should lay the issue to rest.

The person who said that to you is just being nasty, perhaps it makes her feel like a big person and that is pathetic.

Just keep going and ignore her. By the way, I am taking a class taught by a 66 year old who still works in surgical day care and she runs circles around all of us who are 25 to 30 years younger.

Hi there!... Well, believe me my mom got her license at 58...she's 61 now and working as RN in California...She took the test 4 times...3 failed and the 4th one passed..Thanks God...I'm only 32 working here in Kuwait for 5 years but I took the test twice but failed...sometimes I'm thinking she's (mom) more intelligent than me hehehe....Good luck..God bless

Thank you very much, everybody who replied to my message. Now thinking back, I realized that this nurse is an LPN, while I was shooting for an RN, and that could be one of the reasons. Yes, I thought this was a bunch of hot air, but decided to ask around. I just phoned my floor manager, who said she hasn't heard about it, either. I do appreciate your support.

I will continue with my studies. Oh I hope I will survive the Intermediate Algebra and Chemistry, too. :yeah:
