Licensed after 55?

Published

:confused:I have a question. I am currently an STNA on a hospital floor, and am working on my nursing pre-requisites. Today, a nurse approaches me, and eyeing my full bookbag, says that I wouldn't be able to get a nursing license because I am over 55. Well, slightly over, but still. She said this with a completely straight face, and insisted that she was not joking. I wonder if this is true. I doubt it, but who knows. I know a few nurses who graduated after 55, and that was years ago. But she insisted that this was true, and added that because of nurses' shortage, I might get licensed even though I am 57 now, so when I graduate, I'll be closer to 60. So... what do you think? Have you ever heard of this?

All answers are greatly appreciated. Thank you all and have a nice day.

Specializes in Telemetry/Med Surg.

Grin and ignore it.

I graduated nursing school in 2006 at age 53.

Horse hockey.

I'm 55 and taking the NCLEX-RN in November. I graduated with a woman who is 66.

You will do great. Sounds like she is jealous because you have the incentive to what she may never be. Strive high and keep focused. Make all "non-traditional" students proud. I too am non-traditional and have found the second go round I did a lot better than the first when I was in high school. I graduated high school 1978 and LPN school 2006. We can do this-----:yeah:

Specializes in Day Surgery, Agency, Cath Lab, LTC/Psych.

I've worked with many 60+ nurses and at least one who was 70+. I can assure you that they could run circles around anybody in their twenties.

She's full of it, plain and simple. I'm over 55 and got my first nursing license a bit over a year ago.

Specializes in Progressive Care/Med-Surg.

I entered nursing school at 54 and graduated and got a license. I am now 60. This person is spun!

Hi. I am new here and will be starting my classes towards an RN in January. I am 53! It never crossed my mind to question licensing age limits.

YOU GUYS HAVE MADE ME CRY!!!

THANKS

I will be 60 years old next week and have been licensed since 2/14/05 at 57. It wasn't easy but it was the best thing I have ever done. As far as I know, you can be licensed at any age.

Lots of luck--it's a trip!!!

Specializes in med/surg, ER.

I will continue with my studies. Oh I hope I will survive the Intermediate Algebra and Chemistry, too. :yeah:

You will survive... I did, but there were tears involved!

I will graduate in June at 51:D

You will be great! Bringing in the life experience you have is a big plus. We just have a different way of looking at things when they are filtered through the experience of years.

Specializes in A little of this & a little of that.

Total crap. I've worked witj brand new nurses in the more mature age groups and actively working RN's in their 80's. By the time I finish my MSN/NP, I'll be over 50. Knowing all those older women gives me confidence that I have many years of practice ahead of me in the area I really want.

Maybe this is something she has used as an excuse for not going back to school herself so many time she believes it.

Specializes in Community Health, Med-Surg, Home Health.

Oh, pluh-leez!!! Many times, people hate to see others catching up with them-you get to see how horrible they really are. And they try to show some one-upmanship. Screw this person, get your license and smear it in her face. I'm proud that you have the courage to do this, and don't let these fools get you down.
