Today, just through casual conversation with some of the other students in my class I found out some very interesting information. I'm not sure if this is just for NC or nationwide, but I was told that if you do not graduate by 2012 with your BSN then you will have to re-take your boards every ten years. I was also told that if you are planning to become a nurse practitioner that you will need your licsense by 2013 or your will need a doctorate instead of just a masters. Is there any truth to any of this? Thanks for any clarification!!

The thing about the doctorate is a total myth. Many master's programs are voluntarily choosing to switch to offering a Doctoral of nursing practice, but it is not a nationwide or even a state mandate.

Also, I have not heard of any states that are requiring or even considering requiring nurses to retake NCLEX every 10 years. Most states are instead moving toward mandatory CEU's.

I do not know about the boards but I do know that it is TRUE that if you are planning to become a nurse practitioner that you will need need a doctorate in 2013 .

Um feel free to do a search on All nurses or google and you will find that is a myth. None of the nursing school accreditation boards or other circles are mandating a doctorate. It is being recommended, suggested, and is available. Why would schools still be offering MSN degrees when some of their students will not graduate until after 2013?

In Florida, you're gonna need a doctorate for NP. Not sure when, but its happening here.

Some states like NJ and NY are considering the "BSN in 10" which means you would have 10 years to get the BSN or have you license placed on hold or some punitive actiion.

I practice in Florida and the FL BON has not mentioned this.

By 2015 most people graduating would be graduating with a DNP. The AACN/CCne would stop accrediting masters program starting 2012.

There are no mentions of it on the FL BON and the only reason I heard of this was when I was looking at local grad schools. For example UF states:

In keeping with national recommendations from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, we will phase all of our advanced practice specialty tracks to the DNP level by 2012.

But I haven't read anywhere where it says you have to do. It's just a recommendation by the AACN.

Also worth mentioning is the ACNM (American College of Nurse-Midwives) has issued a policy statement that they have no plans to require a DNP to become licensed as a CNM. So the "DNP by 2015" does not apply to CNMs, the way it might to NPs.
