Is this true?Conflicting Info..

Today, just through casual conversation with some of the other students in my class I found out some very interesting information. I'm not sure if this is just for NC or nationwide, but I was told that if you do not graduate by 2012 with your BSN then you will have to re-take your boards every ten years. I was also told that if you are planning to become a nurse practitioner that you will need your licsense by 2013 or your will need a doctorate instead of just a masters. Is there any truth to any of this? Thanks for any clarification!!

Specializes in Family Nurse Practitioner.

I thought the DNP thing was more a school to school decision probably the same schools that are fat and happy from the extra bucks those CNL programs rake in.

Specializes in Critical Care, ED, Cath lab, CTPAC,Trauma.
Some states like NJ and NY are considering the "BSN in 10" which means you would have 10 years to get the BSN or have you license placed on hold or some punitive actiion.

The DNP is proposed for 2015 but not set in the statutes at this time.

They said they were getting rid of diploma programs 32 years ago and they yet still exist. I'll believe it when I see it but if I was entering into nursing school now it would be BSN all the way.......with a whole career a head of me as it was 32 years ago. I choose ASN over diploma and I would choose BSN today over ASN. ONly time will tell.

Specializes in Intermediate care.

The doctorate thing is true. (at least in my state...).

About the ADN and re-taking boards every 10 years, i HIGHLY doubt thats true, i've never heard of anything like that. Just because someone has an ADN as opposed to a BSN does not mean they are less competent in nursing material. Te only benefit a BSN has is they are more "rounded" i.e. taking non-nursing classes, alot of cultural type classes, maybe some leadership...more research based nursing etc. However; they measure the same in NURSING classes and are required to take the same nursing classes. The NCLEX is only based on these core nursing classes, which is why i highly doubt that would be true.

I have my BSN...so i guess if it is true that is why i never heard of it. BUt i would not worry too much about that.
