A 38 year-old elective surgery patient scheduled as 1st case the following morning (6:00) was admitted the night before. He was to undergo Laparoscopic cholecystectomy. He came in with his girlfriend. Admitting SOP's were done and the couple was nice and friendly.

Still walking on the aisle heading to the nurse's station, I thought I had to return to the patient's room because I felt I need to explain the rationale and stress on the NPO post dinner instruction I gave earlier. I knocked 3x, identified self as the nurse in-charge and opened the unlocked door. To my surprise of finding my patient half naked and having rough sex with the girlfriend on the floor just in front of me! I felt really embarrassed that I just quickly pulled the door close and rushed to the nurse's station with face red and hot! :imbar I even forgot to apologize! :smackingf

I managed to return after an hour, I think, to complete the task and to apologize. Boy, that was difficult :D.

If you have experienced similar thing while at work, how did you handle the situation?

By the way, if I do sound overly-reacting, perhaps because I am from Asia with more conservative culture on sex and sexuality, and this was my first time :D.

:imbar Thanks

I'm not very conservative about sexual mores, but I don't think the hospital is the place for sex. I wouldn't have apologized.

I actually do have regrets! They didn't lock the door and I was just away for like a minute or so! Grrrr! :D

It honestly stressed me that night but I am now able to laugh about it. Really unforgettable!

Thanks.

Lol,all my mind kept thinking was...

" EWWWWW,on the floor????"

(If they do want me and happen to read this....call me! ) ;)Sigh

My true question is why he was an overnight admit BEFORE surgery for an elective lap choley?

What a waste of hospital space.

i've walked in on it a few times -- when i worked at the peter bent brigham years and years ago, there was a prostitute who used to come in and "do" the guys on the men's ward. no private rooms -- just a big ward with curtains. i walked in on a patient and his wife more than once, on a patient and a physical therapist once, and on the married director of nursing and the equally married medical director of the er once. (she lost her job and her marriage; he kept his.) i'm always embarrassed, usually too much so to apologize. and then i get angry at them for embarrassing me. it's always difficult to go back in and take care of the patient after that, too!

The last time it happened to me, I told them that the statement "get a room" meant a hotel room, not a hospital room

That's how they do it in our hosp when patient is scheduled very early in the morning. Patient has to be in the OR 1 hour prior to schedule (5am), all prepared for surgery. No "room reservation" policy (to ensure availability of rooms for admissions coming from the ER which are of priority) of the hosp prompt patients to be admitted that early. Besides, we cater for patients from provinces and nearby sub-urbs . Commuting at wee hours of the morning is quite dangerous in this part of the city.
