honeymoon during orientation

Nurses General Nursing

Hi All.

I will be graduating in May of 16, and most likely taking NCLEX in July, meaning orientation will be in august/september. I am getting married Sep 17 and the honey moon will the 18-25.... most likely during my RN orientation.

Will I lose out on a job because of this? Or will managers be flexible since this is the most important day of my life kinda thing?

Thanks ahead of time!!!

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

Were you even hired yet? Some areas won't consider you until licensed. Some areas it takes 6+ months to get hired

Specializes in critical care, ER,ICU, CVSURG, CCU.

In today's job market, and ”there is no shortage of nurses"....I would not do anything including taking a honeymoon.....during orientation....you can always take a honeymoon..lat your leisure, guess it depends what is the most important to you...

best wishes, as Us Crusty ole fossils need a break....

congratulations on on both your graduation and marriage...

No I am not hired, but I have a pretty solid set up for a NICU job here in Ohio. I was just curious what others have experienced when it comes to taking a honeymoon during orientation. One of my nurse friends said since it is a wedding/marriage related, the managers are usually lienant and understanding.

Seriously, as a nurse manager, I would only be interested in..lthe safe and adequate staffing for my unit....

A honeymoon is loosely wedding related IMO when it comes to work. You can take a honeymoon at any time (everyone knows this) and a week of vacation during orientation is usually a no go.

If you know the managers already, like you work as a PCA, they would probably be lenient. Or you could push back your start date to after the honeymoon.

I was in the same situation as you, we got married last June and I'm just now taking my "latermoon" (what we called it) on Saturday!

My experience is that managers are fairly understanding about honeymoons taken by established employees who have proven they are assets to the unit. A brand new grad asking for a vacation during orientation? Um, no.

It could work out for you. Or not. But none of us really know. We don't know that unit, what the unit manager is like, and how she would view something like this.

If there are any other candidates for your "pretty solid set-up" who have no honeymoon or other plans that will disrupt their orientation (thus showing dedication to their new profession), who do you think will be offered the position?

Of course all bets are off if you have an "in" or an off the record offer already. But as has been said, a honeymoon immediately following the wedding is not set in stone. Even if you DO have a guarantee of this position, it will be seen as a gesture of commitment if you delay your honeymoon in order to fulfill your obligations to your new position.

Do you really want to be forever remembered on your unit as the guy who couldn't/wouldn't work long enough to complete orientation?

I would just slow your roll and wait till you are actually hired and have an actual orientation date. This is in like 9 months. There is no way to plan for this.

There is no rule that a honeymoon needs to be taken right after the wedding.

During my first RN job I got married shortly after orientation. I got the weekend of the wedding off and the honeymoon was a quick 2 day trip to the mountains. I didn't have any paid time off built up, nor was I eligible for PTO.

When our first anniversary came around, we had money saved up, plans made, and lots of time off saved so we could celebrate a fabulous first anniversary trip.

I didn't take a honeymoon for ten years after I was married. I had to request my wedding day off, trade the day after, and come into work two days after I got married. All because I had just started work 3 weeks before.
