GA BON no longer accepting Excelsior education; Speak up Cont. Updates!!

Published

Hey All,

I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.:banghead:

Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.

I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead::banghead: :banghead:

I guess the bad thing is that they will eventually stop accepting EC grads, but hey, I'm so freakin' happy for my Georgia peeps right now!

I know, I was thinking the same thing. Question: I know Georgia and Virginia will stop accepting EC. Will I be able to practice in those states by endorsement if I get my licenses in the next few months? I'm not saying I want to move to any of those states but if I meet their cut off requirements, If I want to move 10 years from now, can I practice in those states?

Who knows about 10 years from now? Georgia has always accepted ED grads by endorsement. Don't know about Virginia.

I think GA is going to go back to accepting EC grads as they always did.

Actions Taken By the Georgia Board of Nursing at its December 19 Meeting

Macon, Ga.—The Georgia Board of Nursing met by conference call on Friday, December 19, 2008.

The Board discussed the impact of the statutory change regarding applicants for licensure by endorsement which became effective July 1, 2008. The Board determined that applicants for licensure for endorsement may petition the Board, on a case by case basis, to grant a rule waiver or variance pertaining to the applicant’s nursing education under the following criteria:

  • Applicant was actively enrolled in a nursing program on July 1, 2008.
  • Applicant completed all program requirements and will have successfully graduated from the program by July 1, 2010.
  • Applicant holds a valid license from another state or jurisdiction, as required for licensure by endorsement.
  • Applicant applied for endorsement in Georgia by December 31, 2010.
  • Applicant complies with procedure for rule waiver/variance as provided by the Administrative Procedure Act.

The Georgia Board of Nursing will hold its next meeting Thursday, January 15 and Friday, January 16, 2009 at the Professional Licensing Boards in Macon.

I think I just heard a giant sigh of relief echoing across GA! Excellent!

WOW!!!!!!!!!!! Amazing! Congrats to everyone who benefits from this. I know I will!

I just read my email and was coming to post the letter as well. This is excellent news for Ga and other states to see they are not going to be able to pull this stuff as well. :D In your face to some of those GA BON memebers( the old ones that were replaced by the Governor). Lets have a news reporter interview them now...I would love to see their response. Ha!!:lol2:

Anyways, For all the people that can graduate go graduate I'm exciting for you guys and keep us posted about where you end up working and anything you could pass along to us future ga nurses. To those like me who still have concepts and the dreaded CPNE...still left and was discourged....we have a long road ahead us but the light is at the end of tunnel and we have to finish by Dec. 31 2010 which is doable that's 2yrs. (You have to wait for that dang CPNE like 6 months). Lets not slack and let time pass us by and the deadline pass and lets make sure we all get there. I had not tested for a concept in 5 months beacause of this stuff but I cracking my books open tonight!!

Lets continue to encourge each other...heck...if anyone wants to form study groups in person once in a while or on the phone let me know now I'm in or at least for encourgement..

I have confidence that not only us but they will eventually allow future students to continue to go through excelsior and get endorsed through Ga.. Let not stop fighting for those behind us that really need this as an option.

What great news! A big pat on the back for those of you who worked so hard to make this public, and for getting back what you (and your patients) deserve! I am so happy for you all, and as an EC alumnus, I am very, very proud of you all. Well done.

(sorry for such a comma-rific post). :D

THAT IS GOOD NEWS!!! I WONDER WHY CASE BY CASE BASIS WAS STATED. IT SEEMS THAT MAYBE THE LETTER HAD TO BE WRITTEN A PARTICULAR WAY. I DON'T KNOW. JUST WONDERING AT THIS POINT.:heartbeat
