Hey All,
I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.
Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.
I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead:

and now, the cpne... i'm so excited! feb 20-22, here it comes...
Congratulations to everyone who will benefit from the recent reversal of the GA Board of Nsg. This was strictly politics. I am truly happy for you all. But I must forewarn you again that the battle is not over. Now you have to contend with the rejection that you will get form the hospitals themselves as they have been lead to believe that Excelsior is not an accredited school. I think that it is very important the Fox5 news run the story again and update the communities in GA of the boards decision. Many of you already have jobs that you can remain in but many will be forced to move out of LPN positions with NO RN positions available. That was my case, luckily I already worked at several local hospitals (for years) through agency and several offered me a job right away. But they knew me and were very comfortable with my skills as a nurse. There are still many people out there who think lowly of Excelsior we must get the word out. I do every chance I get.
Congrads to all who will benefit from this news. I am so happy for those who can now go on with their nursing careers.
Yes, people who were in class July 1, 08 and apply to GA by 12, 31, 20 were ripped off since there was no transition from acceptance to revocation.
HOWEVER, they are still banned for new students from now on, or attending after July 1, 08. So those people got by, thank goodness. But what about the new students?
I am glad GA corrected their procedural errors of administrational transitions. And it is good for the people who would have wasted their time. But it in no way is a green light for anyone enrolling after July 1, 08. Those people may just have 6 months of grueling wasted time depending on their motivation levels. So it is not good news to all of the durrent students even, NOR to people PLANNING on going.
JUST reading the last page of comments, you'd think the decision was reversed which was NOT the case. I just wanted to clarify the situation in pages to follow of party ballons and smiley faces :gtch:
"NO RN positions available".....clarify please?
I think they meant the endless market is getting saturated quickly, and it is going to take more than just an RN license from now on to get a 'real' RN job. Therefore, employers would gladly have RN's at LPN's salaries, and cut back on the CNA's: cleaning diapers and bathing 400 lb men
Well, the congrats are appreciated, but maybe a bit premature. I printed off the endorsement application the day that I received the e-mail saying that we were now eligible. Guess what.....we are not. They changed the endorsement requirements. You must have 500 hours of RN experience before you are eligible. Since I graduated in Sept, got my license in Nov, and have worked in GA as an LPN while waiting for this mess to get ironed out.....I have no RN experience. I will be writing EC, the GNA, and Gov. Sonny Perdue on Monday, but as of this moment.....we were thrown a bone, but it got taken away. Another disappointment.
Don't get me wrong, I agree with the idea of experience being needed....and I appreciate the fact that it seems to be moving in the right direction, but we still are not where we need to be.
Wow! I did not know that they are now requiring 500 clinical hours as an RN to be endorsed. I am going to calling the college and writing the Governor as well to find out if this is true and what can be done. For someone like myself...I am not done with the course work yet and then on top of that I will have to obtain 500 RN hours and apply by Dec. 2010 that may be nearly impossible. Second of all that means we will have to get that experience out of state or take a travelling job. Ergh...
The college should set up some type of intership/externship paid or unpaid with hosiptals. We get experience and they cheap labor but then be allowed to work for these same hospitals. Also they show us how they like things done, they see that we know what we are doing because we have learned from their staff and when go to work for them.
I don't know...but others are right....the fight is not over....and this is not in the bag for some of us.

I too researched the information pertaining to licensure by endorsement and the application specifically states that any applicant that doesn't meet the 500 hours or 3 months of RN practice for compensation MUST complete a Georgia Board of Nursing Reentry program. This consists of 40 hours of relevant study and 160 hours of practice relevant to nursing under the supervision in a 1:1 relationship.
However the reentry process guidelines state:
The Georgia Board of Nursing Rules & Regulations require an applicant for
licensure to document within the last four (4) years preceding the date of current
application one of the following:
1. Graduation from an approved nursing education program;
2. Three (3) months or 500 hours of licensed practice; and
3. Completion of a Board-approved reentry/refresher program
So with this new ruling being the case, Excelsior is now being considered an approved nursing education program, so I don't see how the 500 hours or 3 months will apply to those of us who are now eligible for licensure as this was not the standard.
What is confusing is the requirement for a petition for a rule variance or waiver. I read the 5 questions, and yes it appears that we will require legal consult (attorney) or another informed representative. I am hoping that GNA or Excelsior can provide the necessary guidance to properly answer the questions.
