Came across this and thought we need a little humor during out frequent breaks from studying......we need MORE breaks than the youngens.....you know what I mean
Just in case you weren't feeling too old today, this will certainly change things.
The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1987 . They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.
Their lifetime has always included AIDS.
The CD was introduced the year they were born.
They have always had an answering machine
They have always had cable.
Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.
Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.
They never took a swim and thought about Jaws!
They don't know who Mork was or where he was from
They never heard: "Where's the Beef?", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel", or "de plane Boss, de plane".
McDonald's never came in Styrofoam containers.
They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter
Save the earth. It's the only planet with chocolate
For Christmas this past year, my 8 yr-old got me a big "Little House on The Prairie" book with a whole bunch of stories in it.
I love Little House....one of these days....(when I am a nurse an have an decent income coming in), I'm going to bite the bullet and buy all three sets on DVD! (3 sets/$50 each) :chuckle
I liked Grisly Adams....I remember RERUNS of Mr. Ed.
What about Gidget? Was Gidget the flying nun, or is that two different shows???
What about the old black & white tv shows of the man who turned into the dog? (Like Tim Allen in "The Shaggy Dog" now.)
Speaking of "The Jetsons"...did everybody else think by the time they were old enough to drive we'd all have our own personal "space traveling" vehicles -you know...just like "The Jetsons"!!!??? I did!
When I was young and we lived in FLA, we would visit Epcot Center all the time. I thought the GREATEST thing EVER was talking to someone on a video/phone (operator).. Now it is really happening.. I talk with my brother in Jamica through a video camera on our computers just like an Epcot 20 or so years ago ... Maybe floating cars ARE just around the corner..
PS. I remember the National Anthem on the TV... and Nanu Nanu to everyone too...
I loved Captain Kangaroo. I was in afternoon kindergarten and was able to watch him in the mornings before school.
:)
I know where I was when Reagan was shot 2nd grade. We also all talked about "who shot JR?" Friday nights were watching Dukes of Hazzard, Dallas and Falcon Crest. The Wizard of Oz once a year was such a special event we broke out the popcorn popper and watched it.
I was sitting in Science class when we got word the Challenger exploded. My Science teacher had applied to be the teacher in space.
4 channels on TV and when the president was on it was the end of the world because he was on evvvveeerrrry channel.
I couldn't have an atari cause my parents thought it was a waste of money. Our first VCR was over $500. My best friend had Beta.
I remember having to be in the house when the street lights came on and not being able to wear makeup till I was 16.
And yes I had one of those HUGE cell phones but they were cool cause you didn't have to plug in to your cigarette lighter.
Also don't forget the cars had the headlight dimmer switch on the floor and I can remember asking how my dad did that.
When I was in the audio/visual club in school we had to set up the 8mm projectors and screen for teachers.
Don't forget parachute pants and also matching your socks with your belts with your earrings. The big one was rolling your jean legs to get them as tight as possible and wearing sloch socks.
Sorry this is long but it is so much fun.
:rotfl: ok..i have to ask....are you male or female?(i remember when my oldest sister had a friend pierce her ears for her. it came unnumb! ouch!!!!!!!!!!)
female. back in those days, i pierced about 15 others' ears. i was an "expert" probably just getting ready for my nursing career 40 years later.
also, no one i talk to seems to remember this but me. someone please tell me i didn't just dream this. i can't remember the year, but a decision was made to keep daylight savings time year-round, but the power companies complained they were losing too much money. did this just happen in my mind or just in california (where i grew up)? help, doesn't someone else remember this too???
."HHHEEEEEYYYY YOU GUYS!!" No one younger than us remembers that THAT is where Morgan Freeman first showed up on TV! And to this day I can't see Rita Moreno without hearing her scream that line!
Oh my God, I was such a public TV addict!
Morgan Freeman was on the Electric Company! I remember I was a little too old for that show when it came out but watched it some anyway.
And the Planet of the Apes: Well I saw that when it came out in the theatre. When those apes first came out riding on horses my mom yelled, "Oh my G___! They're apes!" LOL! The whole theatre was shocked at the juxtaposition. Then when Charleton Heston ran and got caught and first spoke and said something like get your paws off me you d@mn dirty ape!" We were all so shocked! It seemed like the worst words he could possibly use!
My dad told me that when he went to see Gone With The Wind in the Theatre and at the end when Rhett Butler says to Scarlet O'Hara "Frankly my dear I don't give a d@mn!" The entire audience gasped. LOL! They weren't used to such a bad word. Oh horror of horrors!

dry i gew up in ca and i remember it as just talk. but remember when jimmy carter changed it? i think he started it sooner or something. it was to save energy. we had to get up when it was dark and dawn was just breaking as we walked to school. then i remember that the news said a girl was killed walking to school. she was hit by a car and it was too dark for the car to see her.
anyone remember the so-called gas shortage of the 70's and the long lines for gas? and you couldn't get gas if you already had a half a tank and the attendant would actually check the meter in your car.

I just read about it in my History book....how strange is that???? Reading about what seems like somewhat "current" events in a History book is really weird!!!
I'm a 57 model, and I can remember when I was eight and we were the first family in the neighborhood to have a color TV. The whole neighborhood came over to see it! Only problem was, there were only two shows that were broadcast in color - The Wonderful World of Disney and Bonanza! I remember seeing the Beatles on Ed Sullivan when I was in the first grade, and I remember being sent home from school early in the same year when Kennedy was shot. What I really love now is that they say 50 is now the new 30. FAR OUT!!!!
Remember turning is soda bottles so you could buy candy at the convenience store? Both my parents smoked while I was growing up. I can remember them handing me a dollar and a note, then, I would ride my bike to the 7-11 and get them cigarettes. I don't smoke; however, what I hear, they don't even allow cigarette machines now.
I remember when Saigon fell and our school recieved an influx of Vietnamese children.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot. There were no ATM machines. You had to go to the bank and cash a check! My M-I-L still refuses to use ATM machines. LOL
