Flu in Schools 2016

How's it going with you guys?

Not to temp the Flu Gods, but so far so good.

Lots of mono, strep and "walking" pneumonia, however.

No flu here. I had a bunch of strep cases running around about 2 weeks ago, but apparently the antibiotics are working now!

But lots of colds. And I don't have decongestants or cough drops! So you're SOL, suck it up buttercup!

Does this student have an attendance issue?

My vote is: yes :)

Several confirmed strep cases here but so far no confirmed flu. Lots of sinus infections, me included!

Did an announcement during morning meeting that I have nothing to offer cold symptoms, that I was just going to push fluids and that would alleviate their symptoms. I still have kids c/o cough and runny nose. No flu yet, hopefully will miss us (knocks on wood).

The teacher's even know I don't have anything to help with colds and they still send them anyway! I have a lot of new teachers who don't know how to say no yet (and I'm a new school nurse, so I'm learning to say no too! :)). Those 45 second visits do break up the day though!

I don't mind them coming, I just think of the disruption to the class and the kid being out of class.

At the Pedi urgent care, where I work pool, we have various delegated orders we can utilize during the triage process; one of which is a rapid flu test. However, the rapid flu can only be used by delegated order during flu season and the hospital Infectious Disease MD has not proclaimed it to be flu season...yet.

No flu but we did have a vaccinated child present with chicken pox.

No Flu here either, although we have seen several cases of Pertussis in vaccinated students.

He uses some magic formula regarding positives collected in the hospital, ER, and clinics and makes the proclamation; start and end.

We do rapid flu on any upper respiratory, febrile patient and maintain droplet precautions until cleared by the state (3-4 days) on patients in the hospital. Much more prone to outbreak in the general population from clinic patients than inpatient.
