How many nurses out there still had to learn this pledge?? I did when I was in college and I was just wondering if anyone else had had to memorize it too.

Florence Nightingale Pledge

I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly, to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully. I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug. I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling. With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physician in his work, and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care.

When we recited this at capping, our instructors were VERY particular about the pronunciation...it was miss-che-vus -> short e NOT miss-chee-veeus.

I think in historical terms it is a nice touch for nursing students to learn.

Of course the only part that sticks a bit in my craw is the "aid" to the doc part . ... . . I like being a teammate better.

The last time I said it, was on June 22, 1964 at my capping ceremony. Ya, we even wore caps back then. Along with heavily starched bibs, aprons, collars and cuffs.

Hey, I remember starching my cap in liquid starch and then slapping it on to a mirror to dry. And pinning my bid and apron together, and having it stand up, alone, overnight, before I put it on. I didn't think anyone still wore such uniforms. The inside of the apron were great for writing notes on.

I am in disbelief at how sexist and outdated this FN pledge is.

Perhaps it is time to create a new pledge...
