Fall 2019 Nassau Community College Nursing Program

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi all! I’ve searched around & haven’t seen any threads on the Fall 2019 NCCC Nursing program applicants so I decided to start one. I would love to hear from current applicants, current/past students, family or friends of NCCC nurses. Any feedback is appreciated. Feel free to join in & let’s chat! ?

From what I’m reading it wouldn’t make sense to leave after the NCLEX because you take Bachelor level classes through Empire from the start. I’m not sure if you CAN either bc I didn’t see Associate as an option anymore, so I’m sure they wouldn’t leave a loophole for people to do that. It seems like you don’t get your Associate after the 2 years but you can sit for the NCLEX after the 2nd or 3rd? I’m not sure if that’s possible though. You then complete the Bachelor through Empire.

I agree that it just adds to course work. You don’t start clinical right away either.

I see in that link, that after the 5th semester, the associate degree is earned. The only reason I'm conscious of it is because back in the day, with Columbia U's Master's Direct Entry program, some students would leave after getting the Bachelor's degree, and forget about continuing with the rest of the program (the Master's portion). I wonder if people might try to do the same thing, but I suppose time will tell. I figure if you make it that far, might as well stick with the program since the classes from there on out would be all online.

I'm a little annoyed that they decided to add those extra history and western civ courses into the associate degree portion of the program, but I suppose I'd suck it up and power through it all if I get accepted.

Now I'm wondering if NCC would help students get nursing jobs when they pass the NCLEX, and what do you do if you don't pass NCLEX on your first try.

Thank you for posting link! Anyone see the first semester is mainly just general electives but they put in “HIST 3345”. I wonder if we all get accepted this fall, will we just take HIST 3345 in the summer? Because it seems like you can’t move onto semester 2 without doing all the semester 1 courses. Overall, this seems like a big headache. I wish Nassau didn’t do this bachelor stuff.

They showed us a sample of the proposed schedule once the BSN program is finalised and honestly I still have doubts. I wish I sat closer so I could have snapped a pic of the screen, but the first semester for example includes Bioethics (if you didn't take it), Modern American History (which sounds like US History post civil war, which I already took). Apparently, the Modern American History (which is an Empire State College class) is an upper level class and the class I took is a lower level class so it sounds like I'd have to take it again-which is what I am NOT trying to do.

Also, in the 2nd or 3rd semester there is a Western Civ class, which I have never seen in any RN to BSN bridge program. I'm not too pleased with the proposed changes. I saw a Sociology class that deals with Aging which sounds ok, but the other classes sound unnecessary. Bottom line, it's a financial thing for me, and also a time issue. The Suny Empire State College classes can be taken online, still-that's more time I have to spend on a class.

Anyway, I'm going to see what happens with my application. I have pretty good grades and 80 overall for TEAS. I really need to find out more once it's all finalized. I don't think it was fair for them to blast us with all these changes while we are still applying-it makes me uneasy that I can't make a decision right now.

I agree with you.. I’m kind of upset with the abrupt change. As I was sitting with an academic advisor, someone came and asked if I was interested in the nursing program, which I was, and show me the brochure, but said that they weren’t allowed to give it to the students because they weren’t 100% accurate. I took pics. The nursing office came it to me anyway.

Anyone applied for evening??!!!.. So I was thinking..and according to the info on their website you need to finished all the classes in semester 1 to be able to register for semester 2..but Nursing 101, which is on semester 2, so we'll have to take it during spring..it's only available during the day on spring.. How if I applied to evenings gonna take that class then... which is available on evening during fall but only during the day on spring. Got what I ak saying?..

I personally am upset by the fact that you have to wait more than 2 years to sit for the NCLEX. I was accepted to SCCC but I'm waiting to hear from NCC because of location. But with SCCC I could at least have a license and could start working at the hospital I am currently employed at (surgical technologist). Having to wait longer for a license is displeasing and a turnoff even though I know a BSN is more valuable. That being said, it's not that hard to obtain one online if you have a license and the AS that goes with it. So I guess we will have to see.

Thanks for posting that @primavera01

and @JennaPants23 Nursing deposit for SCCC is due the 27th or you lose your seat! But I agree waiting another year is a little annoying however you get your BSN in just one more year, rather than doing a 2-year RN-BSN afterward. Pros and cons ya know. It wouldn’t be so bad if I wouldn’t have loans accumulating interest for those 4 years instead of 2, being able to work full time after the 2nd year as an RN to make some money and following up with a bridge from a year or 2 later. Plus I have my Bachelor Degree which I know a lot of us do or st least most Gen Ed. classes but it seems like they are throwing in some that need to be taken again specifically at Nassau/Empire? Not a fan of doing double work/paying.

If you transfer to a SUNY RN-BSN they don’t require any more gen ed. after the 2 year RN - just nursing classes and clinical (majority of what I’ve seen)

Another plus for Nassau though! It only makes sense that your BSN clinical requirement is in that 3rd year. That’s convenient.

Probaly will take nursing 101 in the fall with heavier course load of gen electives. But honestly, I don’t think the nursing Department has a clue what is going on right now.

Question for everyone. Do you guys think the way we will be accepted will change? Like if you took anatomy, you would get extra points and each Teas portion gives you points.

If I knew they wont let me take Nur101 during the fall cuz I'm missing Bioethics I would have applied fot days..better chances to get in since there are more seats..so upset.

They said they still choose according to how many points you have..so the same as before..the more clases ypu have..the better you GPA the more points you get..and the bettter ypu did on the teas the more points u get as well..

I believe Sulfolk is mainly same as ncc. Problem with sulfolk is the deadline for fall 2019 was January 19 I believe and spring 2020 deadline is end of august. Correct me if I’m wrong. If I don’t get into Nassau, I will just apply to scc next semester
