I did everything you can think of I spent over $3000 trying to take this exam with no job and a 7 month old what else can I do I hate this feeling I hate to doubt God but he let devil take power over him what else can i do!!! I am giving up maybe nursing is not for me maybe I just love people and not nursing as a career because this is too much for me to handle
Wow wow wow! I can't believe some of you are nurses!! Where's the love? Poor woman/man comes here looking for help and you shoot her/him down. The Nclex is NOT, I repeat is NOT an accurate parameter of your nursing abilities. I do believe, however, that after the third attempt, one should go in front of a panel interview board and be tested orally.OP, I passed my Nclex the 5th time, was desperate and doubting myself. I now work for a magnet hospital, the ultimate credential for nurses. Somehow, I seriously doubt that any of the posters that shot you down work for a magnet hospital. They simply don't care enough for people and it would've shown in their interview. Don't give up! Change strategies and buy yourself the Lacharity book Prioritization, delegation and assignment. Best of luck!
Where's the love? Get real! Our compassion is owed our patients. But honesty is owed our colleagues and potential colleagues. And honestly, sometimes God *IS* answering you, and the answer is "NO!"
Congratulations on working for a magnet hospital which, by the way, is far from the ultimate credential for nurses. I work for one, too. I have worked for one since Magnet status was invented. So what?
Hey i passed on my fifth try believe me i know how your feeling but you know what Never ever give up, i didn't. I love nursing i knew it was for me but i know that i'm horrible with test. something about big test really make me blank out nervous i don't know what it is. you need to see what or how your studying, do something different. on my last try i just ended up getting a online review, i got books from the library and i just tested and tested that's it. and then review all questions and answers after no matter if right or wrong. DON'T give up just keep trying, think positive negativity only brings negativity.
Flame suit is on so I'm ready to be flamed. I think after not passing 5 times you need to re-evaluate. There really should be a cap on attempts at the NCLEX. The test is supposed to indicate the minimum standard for being a nurse. Even baseball has 3 strikes and you're out.
No flame from me. I agree 100%. If someone can't show minimum competency 5 times, there's a problem.

I don't see what working for a magnet hospital has to do with anything. There honestly needs to be a cut off for times someone can take the NCLEX. Just because we're not rainbows & unicorns doesn't mean we're not good nurses.

1) I think failing 5 times is a huge red flag that needs to be addressed.
2) I work for a magnet hospital.
As a new grad. With "only" my ASN.
Wow.. I'm not a religious person myself, so this may frustrate me more than others. You shouldn't blame your failures on the Devil or give God all of your praise. We are responsible for things like passing a test. I'm pretty sure if there is a God/Devil, they are much too busy with other things, than to care if I pass/fail a test. Also I agree there should be a limit on how many times someone takes the NCLEX without requiring some sort of review. Maybe 3 or 4 times? I can get failing it once or twice. Stress, anxiety, or not quite understanding how to answer the questions is reasonable. By the 3rd or 4th time you should understand how to pass it.
So I am curious....After so many fails on the NCLEX are the graduates required to take a review course or something?
Thankfully I passed my NCLEX and FNP exam first try but with the AANP FNP exam if you fail you must take so many CEU's before you can reapply.
Canada 3x failing = return to nursing school and the Canadians now use the NCLEX-RN now
Many states (FL, NJ and others) 3 failures and you must complete a remediation nursing refresher course before you can attempt again.
If you are US educated go to your nursing school for help. Bring your CPR documents to create a targeted study plan. Are you improving each time or are your results all over the place?
US educated nurses pass the NCLEX first attempt 85-90% of the time. Second attempt and the pass rate drops to less than 50% and lower with each subsequent attempt. Especially if no remediation or refresher course is completed. After 3rd attempt for a US educated nurse the pass rate is
IENs have a first time pass rate of
The statistics are there. States like NY & CA that allow unlimited attempt without requiring remediation do no one any good. Except Pearson Vue who collects $200/test and BoN that often charges $100-$150 for each attempt.
Remediation classes are $300-$2000 (depending if NCLEX prep or refresher with clinical skills). The further one gets post graduation without passing the more difficult it is to pass and subsequently secure employment.
There was a frustrated BSN grad that didn't pass until attempt #11. That's $2200 in exam fees alone. Now since its been more than 4 years post graduation this member is having extremely difficulty competing with fresh new grads for work. Many recruiters advise to take a clack nurse refresher class (cost ~$1500) before they will consider her application. Last I saw still hasn't taken a refresher and is still unemployed.
I am not a religious person, however you must be in great distress to make such a comment like that. I know I have test taking anxieties. Though, it is not as bad when I first started nursing school I just calm myself into the moment and relax. You accomplished the hardest part of nursing, the program itself. Don't be discouraged find where your are most challenged and take it from there. :-)

A nurse with anxiety issues who required more than five attempts to pass the licensing exam isn't the nurse I'd want taking care of MY mother.
