Question for you all!!! What do you all use to screen for vision issues in the school. We currently use just the good old light box. E charts and such. Pre-K and K screenings we pull out the little more in depth items.

I was in the works with a nearby district in purchasing one of those really pricey machines that they look into and it tells you almost everything. That fell through right at the end.

So what other options are out there. I would love to move up to a machine of some sort but have no clue what is the best. Any help would be great!!!!!

Don't know about your state but starting this year, in Texas, the tumbling E is no longer approved for screening; only the HOTV and Sloan Letter Charts. the photoscreening machines can be used through age 5 years or if the student lacks the comprehension or ability to be screened with a wall chart.

Old fashioned light box. And tumbling E is no longer an approved tool in my state, either (Indiana). A couple of our nurses have started having the Lion's Club come in and do screenings. I think they use a fancy machine.

Up until a couple years ago, I also just used the lightbox, with letter for older kids, "house/apple/umbrella" for the littles. But now we have the Lions club bring in their spot screener and it is awesome! They print me out a report for each kid who didn't pass so I can mail that to parents, and then leave me a list of all that did pass, so I can enter that into my health screenings. We could never afford to purchase the machine, so I'm so glad to have them do it.

My preK and K teachers have been working with the littles to make sure we know apple, umbrella, house. But I understand the district purchased one spot screener and someone will show up next month to use it!

I only got a chart. That's it. :/

In my school for kinder and up we use the light box, but we in Texas have also discontinued the tumbling E chart as well. For pre-k or those who are a little more difficult to test we pull out the pulsoptix vision screener and I love it! It just makes it so easy and fast to screen!

Does that work for near and distance acuity requirements? When I talked to a Lion's Club gentleman who was here to do Pre-K with the spot screener, he said they are only supposed to do up to age 5; however, I know a nearby district has the Lions do their K.

Yep. I switched to the HOTV screener 3 years ago. It is also SO MUCH faster to screen with.

It checks near and far vision. Of course in Texas near vision screening is not required. Again in Texas you can SPOT screen "through" age 5, so that would account for most of kinder.

Ugh. I didn't know the Tumble E was no longer approved in Texas this year....:banghead:
