I know where I work you only get your normal pay....& ot if it applies.
How does your hospital compensate you? Do you get a bonus for picking up an extra shift? If so how much?
It seems that every day I am off I get a call needing me to work.....I have talked to a lot of my co-workers & we all agree until they put some money on the table....we are not going to give up our time off for regular pay. I was just wondering how other places compensate you for giving up your day off to work. I would like to have some numbers to refer to when the opportunity presents. Thanks!

I think they make it worth your time by...paying you. I you only work part-time, then the extra shift will at least provide you with a little extra cash. If you are full-time, then you should get OT pay for the extra shift. I'm not seeing where they need to give you anything more than that. Maybe I missed something?

I'm serious... did i miss something? I mean, they call and ask if you can pick up an extra shift. You are not required to work this shift, correct? You have the option to say no and keep your free time . I don't understand the problem

In the nursing home I worked for, you got $20 if you took an extra shift when asked and they still couldn't get people. I think, yeah, if they need people, they should pay for it.

Thanks for answering the question!

When I worked in the ER other Nurses said that the Director of the ER would often offer extra vacation time on top of their OT if she was in great need of help. It must be worth their while even when she didn't offer that because people were always offering to work more. I do know a lot of times it is up to the department you work in and the their budget.

One hospital where I used to work offered "premium pay"; I think it was like, 7 bucks more an hour. That on top on overtime. Could make for a nice check. =)

On the unit I'm on now I haven't been "called in" so I don't know how they do it, but on my previous unit if they called me in to work an extra shift I could negotiate extra pay or perhaps taking off an absence. Of course, I always had the option of just saying "No, thanks".

My hospital just recently took our bonus away due to the economic times. So nobody works any ot anymore. But they used to give us 125 bonus everytime you picked up an ot shift. it was nice cuz that was a 10 dollar an hour over your reg pay with ot.
